Santana to Boston for Lester +2 "all but done".

Johan Santana will may join the pink hats. Then again, maybe he won't.

The Twins will might get Jon Lester, Justin Masterson (not Crisp), and Ryan Kalish.

I heard this on ESPN radio while driving this afternoon. Now it's being said by Will Carroll at Baseball Prospectus as well.

Still a rumor, though, no official confirmation yet.

NY talk radio
All the callers are complaining that Minn demanded more from NY than BOS. Speculation/conspiracy theory du jour is that Pohlad is pissed off at Steinbrenner for some BS remarks Steinbrenner made about how the Twins spend the revenue sharing $$ they get from other teams. So he demands more from NY "to get revenge".

Right, guys. He'll accept less from another steam just to stick it to George. 'Cause all anyone really gives a shit about is beating the Yankees, even in making trades, right? puhllleeeeeze.

That's it?
Yeah I know unless Justin Masterson and Ryan Kalish are these super stud prospects that have been flying under the radar.

The Yankees...
...are getting even more arrogant under Hank than they were before, and I didn't think that was possible. All this garbage about things "meaning more" if done by a Yankee, and the artificial deadlines. Fine, don't give yourselves a chance to trade for the best pitcher on the planet.

Also, let's not forget that the NY media and fans drastically over-value Melky Cabrera. A plus throwing arm, maybe, but all he's ever going to amount to at the plate is league average, if that.

Much of it...
...in the NY fanbase comes directly from the Pinstriped Bard, Michael Kay.  His exaggeration of various Yankees' talents borders on a comedy of the absurd.  He is to the New York Yankees what Rush Limbaugh is to the GOP.

Wow
I'm not familiar with Michael Kay, but the Rush Limbaugh of the Yankees sounds like someone I can really despise.

To state the obvious...
the Red Sox are going to be very tough to beat in a playoff series with the addition of Santana to their rotation.

AL is just stacked next year
If this is true, on top of everything else...
  1. How can you top that BoSox rotation? And they still will have a top bullpen and one of the best hitting teams in the league.
  2. The Yanks kept their core intact and still have good prospects coming up. They have to be at least a 90 win team again.
  3. The Indians are also at least as good as 2007.
  4. The Tigers now have a deeper rotation (though I'm not big on Willis either) and an offense that may contend with Boston and New York.
  5. The Angels have maybe the deepest rotation, the addition of Hunter, and maybe an infield upgrade too.
Can anyone make the playoffs in the AL besides these five teams? And what one team of the five won't make it?

My guess
Is that the Yankees will be the ones coming up short. They still don't have pitching and play a lot of games against Boston - which is looking like its going to dominate the division. ARod carried the team last year - if he has an off year now that his contract is set, the Yankees are doomed.

well...
they're pinning a lot of hope on hughes, kennedy and joba chamberlain.  mussina and pettite are both older and even if effective, can probably count on some solid dl time.  they do have his rodness, but jeter's d, suspect even in his prime, will continue to decline along w/ the offense of matsui and abreu and posada can't really be counted to reproduce last season.

this is a very old team.

So, I said, uh, lama: how about a little something for the effort?

Um, can the Orioles petition to join either
the NPL or the Japanese Central League? With the annoyingly talented Bedard and Roberts out of the way, it's Guts and Nick against a stacked deck. And with the Debbil Rays primed to leapfrog us, we need o start thinking about participating in a league where we have a chance. Perhaps the Pac-10 is the solution: just challenging enough, plus good weather most of the time (AZ, CA). Of course, the Orioles would be expected to keep up with their homework-- just like everybody else!
I was going to contribute to the Alberto Gonzales Defense Fund, but I forgot.

Not a done deal yet
It seems that the Twins are still reaching out to other teams.

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2007/12/johan-santana-3.html

Maybe they have the workings of a deal with Boston and just want to shop it around one more time to see if anyone will one up them.

Not really a rumor
But I was just listening to Buster Olney on XM radio talking about trading pitchers. He says that once Santana is traded, he thinks Haren and Blanton will be traded rather quickly, but he's not so sure about Bedard. He says that since Bedard is a premium left hander who has proven he can excel against the best teams in baseball, he might be worth TOO much to be able to trade. He believes Bedard is worth what the O's are asking for him, but it'll be hard to find a team willing to put that up.

I would assume that Olney doesn't think that's as big an issue with Santana because the Twins aren't a destitute team putting all their hopes and dreams on cashing in on Santana's skills the way the Orioles are.
