Non-Gibby chatter 12/07

Would that today were a day that would live in Orioles infamy, i.e., we released Gibby and pulled off a Bedard or Tejajda trade à la fois. But I knew FDR, and MacPhail is no FDR.

Nonetheless, in this holiday season we must keep our hopes up. So I call your attention to the LA Times and Daily News, both of which have Bedard on the brain, a full two days after the winter meetings ended. Sacré bleu!

The Times basically says the whole reason the Blues got Andruw Jones was so they could trade another outfielder for pitching, and the org. is apparently salivating over Bedard, not least which because Torre saw him shut down the Yanks. It also contains this intriguing quote:

On potential alone, you would pick Kemp over Ethier. But of all the Dodgers kids last summer, Kemp was the most raw, the most difficult to coach, often the most perplexing.

Five years from now, he could be Willie Mays. He could also be Willie Mays Aikens.

The Daily News meanwhile, mentions Bedard in passing, saying he's a more likely target than Santana.

This is your late-morning cup of café. Discuss.

I wish we could keep Bedard
I've accepted losing Bedard.  I have come to terms with it.  I expect that I have already seen Bedard's last game as an Oriole.

But god damn, when I read some of these columns and how they talk about Bedard:

"The Dodgers' field personnel love Baltimore's Erik Bedard, an aggressive hard thrower who was third in the American League in strikeouts and fourth in earned-run average.

"He is a left-handed version of John Lackey, only five months younger.

"And, yeah, Torre loves him because last season, he was 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA against the New York Yankees."

Sigh.  Bedard was one of the few reasons that the 2007 Orioles were tolerable, and he's going to be gone and kicking ass on another team in October:

"Either pitcher [Bedard and Santana] would cost them Matt Kemp. But either would put them in the playoffs. And, as Jose Lima would tell you, who knows what could happen then?"  (LA Times)

It's hard to say goodbye.

It is hard. Very hard.
If everything were equal I'd say sign him for 7 years. Keep him an Oriole for life.

But everything isn't equal. Bedard is probably NOT going to sign an extension here, and why should he? He can get as much or more money from a team that has a reasonable chance of winning. We don't. We've all said it and we all know it; if we are not going to win in the next two years, then trading Bedard is the only thing to do, so long as we get back some top flight players in exchange. And remember...technically we have until July 31, 2009, to trade him. I think his value is highest NOW, mind you...but if we don't get a deal done in the offseason, there is always the trading deadline. And the Dodgers sure do have a lot of quality OFers. Excluding Juan Pierre.

There are good arguments either way
What sways me towards the trade:
  1. Bedard is the best trade bait we've had in maybe a decade: phenomenally talented, good contract situation. We need LOTS of good players. We can get 2 guaranteed, with a crapshoot on a third, for Bedard. He is one of our best chances to getting back to respectability fast.
  2. His injury history. Sign him for seven years? If his curveball blows out his elbow in 2010, then you're stuck. Well, someone is stuck. If we trade him it won't be us.
  3. He wants to go. In fact, if you read between the lines, most of the Orioles players want to go. The only ones that don't are has-beens that are enjoying their twilight years, and new kids who are just happy to be in the bigs. To deal with the Orioles-are-poison cloud that hangs over the franchise, we really do need to clean house. We need a lot of kids who gel together and are excited about being in Baltimore.
if we chose not to trade him, signed him long-term and built around him, I'd be happy too. I just think it's a lot harder to do, and a lot less likely to pan out.

3 Part Plan...
  1. Get a bunch of kids who are happy to be in the bigs.
  2. Start winning.
  3. THEN they will be happy to be in Balt.
Obviously the key is the right kids.  Baltimore is a cool town, but any player is going to hate losing.  The Oriole teams in the old days had a great spirit, but they were winners.

Bedard vs. The Future
What sways me towards the trade: 69 wins = blow this shit up.

I've got to say that all of the names I see floating around in the Dodgers potential trade are good, solid names.  Kemp, Ethier, LaRoche, Hu, Kershaw... if they've taken Broxton off the table & are so reluctant to trade Kemp, I'll gladly sub Ethier in Kemp's place.

Kershaw, Ethier, LaRoche, and Hu would make this a no-brainer for me.
If we can swing Tejada to LAA for Brandon Wood we can move Hu to 2B & then there's no need for Iguchi.  Roberts to CHC for Pie & others and we suddenly have a very dangerous OF.

OF: Kemp/Ethier - Pie - Markakis
IF: LaRoche - Wood - Hu - ????

Yeah...
I think that's why MacPhail held off on making any of these deals. The big name prospects are out there and could really build the O's for the future, but the Cubs, Angels, and Dodgers are still reticent to give those guys up. MacPhail needs to hold off for them though, even if he has to wait until midseason. Otherwise we give up big proven talent for a crap shoot.

Speaking of Fantasy Baseball
I'm fairly certain that the Cubs will not trade Pie.  The Dodgers have apparently refused our request, saying it was too much. We won't get Kemp, Kershaw and LaRoche.

LA
Kemp, Kershaw and Laroche would be nice!  Kershaw is nasty!

A Carl Pavano pox on him...
I wish no ill wil towards Erik B., but I hate to see any successful Oriole walk, ala Mike Mussina, therefore I wish him a Carl Pavano-like future with his next club.
Wait a sec...I guess I am wishing him ill will afterall.

Keep 'em; Lose someone else.
Who is in for demanding we trade Tejada, for Santana?

He' still available...and you cannot deny "Santana, Bedard, Guthrie" sounds pretty  good. These guys could actually shutdown the Yanks and Sox for at  least a couple playoff games. Getting Santana would also lock up Bedard for a few more years...

Lets be honest, Miggie is slowing down. And, innocent until proven guilty, the Mitchell investigation is going to out A LOT of players. Don't be surprised if more Orioles are in it...

Throw in Ramon and the Twins will do it. We could probably get a good prospect position player for him, which is exactly what we are looking for.

(If not Santana, at least Bartolo Colon)

We keep Roberts. We keep Markakis. We still got Mora (healthy) to play 3rd.

Also, we need to consider throwing some offers at some free agents. Do I hear Mike Cameron...? Or Steve Finley. We gotta have Steve Finley money, right?

Let's do it!

Twins would not dream of giving up Santana for Ramon + Miggy. And even if they did, who would catch for us?

If we are going to win,we must change the face of this club.Roberts & Bedard are two of my favorite orioles. But damn if we can get a few of those
who have supposedly been offered do the deal.

Also get rid of Tejada ,Huff, Bynum, Payton
we need to get visably younger. The pen needs
overhauled & we need a closer. How much clearer
can it get ? Start the trades NOW.

by hagersbush on Dec 7, 2007 3:39 PM EST reply actions

Well, yeah ...
Start the trades, but I think everyone is agreed, let's get value.  Sometimes the best things come to he who waits, so let's not deal just to deal.  I think pretty much everyone is keen to move Tejada.  And, like me, I think everyone hates the idea of losing Bedard, but sees the reasoning.  Only way we're going to keep him beyond '09 is if the team suddenly turns into a contender -- anyone see a path to that in two years?  Same for Roberts.  Markakis is a different case -- I think he's got 4 more years before free agency.  Hopefully by that time the O's will be a team he will want to stay on.

even though they just released this article, this happened in January 2005. This is no doubt some public relations strategery.

Trade Bedard Or Not??
Trade Bedard for another self-centered asshole like Kemp? Really, how much brains does it take to say no to that deal? Keep Bedard and build up the starting rotation with the only real strong spot in the Orioles Minor leauges. With Bedard and a strong rotation for the next two years, who know what can happen. The worst that can happen is the Orioles lose Bedard to FA in 2010 and get two additional first round draft choice in return.
I thought it happier to be dead / to die for a World Series victory, than live for mediocerity.

by chalkdust on Dec 8, 2007 11:55 AM EST reply actions

Trading Bedard...
...invites risk, but not NEARLY as much risk as letting him walk for 2 draft picks. We trade him for Kemp and a couple of other players with excellent minor league and some good ML track records, we know what we are getting and we know how long they are under our control. Much more is known about prospects to trade for than is known about draft picks. Draft picks might not even sign (witness the Wieters drama- I can't go through that again. I'll die) and when you do get them signed, you still really don't know how they'll do. You don't know if they'll ever even GET to the big leagues. That is a far worse case scenario then getting a CF or LF of the future in Kemp, plus maybe a 1B like Loney and a pitching prospect or two. Much worse.

Cardinals and Bedard
This kid Rasmus looks pretty good.  Maybe the O's could have a match with StL regarding bedard.  link below.
