Roch on Perlozzo, etc.

Roch Kubatko: Usually a tool, but I didn't hate this column...
http://blogs.baltimoresun.com/sports_custom_roch/2007/05/still_reeling.html

I clearly have more than one line in this diary. There are at least three. I really just wanted to link to the Roch article, not compose some epic tome. Let me post it now, kthnx.

I'd like to think...
I'm a nice guy too. It doesn't mean I have any business managing a MLB team. Neither does Sam.

by rebop on May 14, 2007 1:00 PM EDT reply actions

Yup.
I really gave Sam way more chances than I normally would because he's a good guy and because he's from MD and grew up an O's fan, etc. I really, really wanted him to be good. But damnit, he's NOT. He is just bad at his job.

If I was that bad at my job, I'd be fired
Aw, who am I kidding, I work for the government. I'm not going anywhere. But still, you understand what I'm saying.

I mean, he has to know that he sucks, right? How can he not know?

As Larry Speakes said for Don Regan
under Ronald Reagan... "He does not know what he does not know." Fire Sam Perlozzo.
Anyone know Davey Johnson's number?

Only one problem....
....if Sam gets fired, does anyone REALLY believe they'll get Davey Johnson or Joe Girardi to replace him??

Nope.  Knowing this team, our new "manager of the future" would be Tom Trebelhorn.

by Chanumas on May 14, 2007 1:05 PM EDT reply actions

or Norv Turner.

RE:
Davey Johnson shouldn't even be in the conversation; there is absolutely no chance he will become the Orioles manager.  I probably have a better chance of becoming manager.  He left because he couldn't stand Angelos; he's not coming back.

Stranger things have happened...
and I remember reading an article about how Petey and Davey sorta, kinda, maybe kissed and made up in the wake of Elrod's passing.

by rebop on May 14, 2007 1:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly
Davey was sort of diappointed he wasn't asked after last season. I think he would come back.
Anyone know Davey Johnson's number?

i agree
plus i think that he is just what this team needs. Just look at what happened in Detriot last year and what (I think) is going to happen in Chicago this year or that other old guy in Florida a couple of years back. We need to join the crusty old manager trend that's sweeping MLB.

Who cares?
Almost anyone would be better. Get Dempsey in there and he can make bad jokes about "domesitically violating" players if they don't start hitting. It would be better.

by rebop on May 14, 2007 1:17 PM EDT up reply actions

What manager...
...whose head is currently not up his own ass would take a job working for Peter Angelos?  Seriously.  That said, there has got to be someone better than Perlozzo though.

Who's coaching the UMBC Baseball team right now?  He'd probably take the job since he wouldn't even have to move.

I'm sold.
Seriously, he could not be any worse.  It's not even like the manager does all that much.  We just need someone who understands the game and can get the fuck out of the way.

John Jancuska?
The UMBC baseball team is 12-36 right now, including 3-17 in the America East Conference, good for dead last.  They've gone 4-24 in their last 28 games, and they lose ugly all the time ...

Yup, couldn't be that much worse.

Everyone can vent....
I've done it. However, who really thinks anything will change?

I predict that the O's will hunker down, ignore the criticism, and pretend that nothing happened. We'll see the same old with both the team's on and off field operations. There will be no further mention of this episode because if they refuse to acknowledge it, it never happened. It's not as if this is new territory for this management group.

Hunker up for more of the same. I'm awaiting the next marketing campaign.

Walking a crazy thin line
The problem with Perlozzo is that his flaws are just so blatantly obvious. The Orioles could and should be a team flirting with 87-90 wins this season if they were managed correctly, but walking that line is so razor thin, that everything Perlozzo does is magnified.

Everyone is blowing up over Sunday's collapse, but what about Saturday's game too? I mean the final score was 13-4, but that game was 4-4 heading into the bottom of the 6th and Perlozzo had Bradford, Walker and Ray all ready in the pen. Yet who comes out? Jon Leicester followed by Todd Williams followed by John Parrish? BOOM, it's 13-4 with the Red Sox scoring 9 runs in the final 3 innings?

What was Perlozzo waiting for there? Sure the Orioles should have gotten out of Boston with a series win, but why aren't we talking about a series sweep?

re:
There was pissing and moaning about that in the game thread. That's why we refer to it as the "forfeit" game. Perlozzo just gave up.

And another thing!
Oh yeah, the whole losing the clubhouse thing has to be close. We've been hearing how the whole 4-man rotation of Huff, Gibbons, Millar and Payton isn't working and I can't see how the starting pitching can be any happier with Perlozzo hooking them so fast it's making their head spin. On top of that, the bullpen has to be mad because of overuse and that is a mixture of a clubhouse that has to be coming a part at the seems.

The Orioles have some players that have won in the past. Tejada, Millar, Trachsel, Bradford, Walker, and Mora. What do these guys think of Perlozzo? It can't be very high.

by Baseball Savant @ Camden Chat on May 14, 2007 2:40 PM EDT reply actions

amazing, isn't it?
Jay Payton bitched in Boston when he was a role player, so the Orioles signed him...to be a role player. Good job, guys. And I can't believe that Millar (one of last year's only useful hitters), Gibbons (in the middle of a contract extension that they gave him) and Huff (who signed on the laughable theory that he's a power hitter) aren't thrilled splitting time.
Catcher Paul Bako - for unclear reasons - seems to be a frequent target.

y'know...
i see the title of this diary and it would sound like "rock on, perlozzo!"  i know that's not the intent, but it kind of amuses me.

by jq higgins on May 14, 2007 4:16 PM EDT reply actions

I kind of thought the same thing....
...but my image was a little different.

I pictured "Rock, on Perlozzo".

Like, I had an image of this huge boulder and Perlozzo was pinned underneath it.

It was very satisfying.

by zknower on May 14, 2007 4:39 PM EDT up reply actions

i like yours better...
but mine did come w/ the mental picture of sammy p playing guitar in kansas...the band, not the state.

regrettably.

How appropriate...
Same old song
Just a drop of water in an endless sea
All we do
Crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see
Dust in the wind
All we are is dust in the wind...

What an uplifting song!

Anyone know Davey Johnson's number?

actually...
i was thinking of sammy p "roch"ing out to carry on my wayward, son.

sort of his managing mantra.

That's way funny....
Masquerading as a man with a reason,
My charade is the event of the season,
If I prove to be a wise man, well
That surely means that I don't know.

Well put!

Took off runnin' but I take my time...
