Gameday Thread 7/26/07 Floppy Fish vs. O's.

THIS IS A GAMEDAY THREAD WRITTEN BY DUCK BUT POSTED BY 2632 DUE TO TECHNICAL ISSUES. I AM NOT DUCK.

Game Time: 12:35 | TV: MASN2, FSN (TAM) | Radio: WHFS
Edwin Jackson, RH Steve Trachsel, RH (2-9, 6.65) (5-7. 5.05)

Two ways to look at this game, in my mind.

1) Orioles get to face a pitcher with 2 wins in 11 decisions and an ERA closer to 7 than 6. Trax does enough to win, and Trembley makes the right calls to give the team a chance to win the series this weekend againt NYY. I'm thinking Trax for 6, then some combination of Bell and Parrish, maybe Shubacca. Bradford and Walker should not, under any circumstances, see the light of day today.

OR

2) Trax is the Trax of late, barely gets through 4 innings, and Trembley has to use 3 or 4 guys from the pen just to get through the game. Win or loss is irrelevent - the bullpen's blown up for the weekend and we lose 2 games to NYY that we might not have had to.

I have a feeling it will be option #1. There's a different vibe with this team now. Remember, a week ago, the O's were just .500 under the Trebley regime, yet they've taken 2 or 3 against the A's and the first two against the D-Rays. Yes, these are games they SHOULD have won, but the point is, they've actually won them. It's a refreshing change.

Let's go O's.

just when you thought it was going well
trachsel takes the hill. at least it's the Rays, though - the battle of awfulness should be entertaining

You did see
the OTHER guy's numbers, right? And TB's bullpen has a 6+ ERA. This may be a battle of suckitude of epic proportions.

by duck on Jul 26, 2007 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions

My gut says
Trachsel's numbers will soon match "the other guy's" except for W/L obviously. He had his run, but I have no faith in him anymore (hopefully now that I've said this he'll throw a perfect game). I want to see Olson back - what better team to have him throw against than TB?

I can agree with that
All options available, I'd much rather see Olson get this start.

BUT - if the O's are to get ANYTHING for Trax, spotlighting him against a bad D-Rays team is a smart move.

Pardon the pun, but fish or cut bait with Trax after this.

by duck on Jul 26, 2007 12:32 PM EDT up reply actions

A or B?
A. Trax tanks, gets released and Olsen gets recalled.
B. Trax tanks but the O's stick with him in hopes of a trade.

by RobG on Jul 26, 2007 12:11 PM EDT reply actions

I pick A
the O's will pick B. but after "in hopes of a trade" you forgot to say "or Steve turning his career around and becoming a great asset to this team".

it bears mentioning...
edwin jackson was once of the most highly regarded pitching prospects in the game, is still only 23 (or 24) and has at least pitched respectable back of the rotation ball his last few starts.

he DID go through a positively ortizian stretch from late may through late june/early july.

by jq higgins on Jul 26, 2007 12:33 PM EDT reply actions

Not quite a forfeit lineup
but damn close to it. WHY does Fahey still have an Orioles uniform???? WTF??? .182???? Defense ain't worth THAT much people. Even Belanger hit over .200 for his career.

So we have THREE guys in the lineup who aren't hitting .220 - that'll strike fear into ANY pitcher, I tell ya.

This is a dillema
Do you root for the O's to swing early in order to keep Jackson in the game? Or do you root for them to get him pulled the next inning so we can see more of that bullpen.

I think I'm rooting for pen here, there pen could be worst than there starters.

by BirdFanInPhilly on Jul 26, 2007 1:48 PM EDT reply actions

The most important thing
... is just to root that Trachsel can pull 7 respectable innings now and rest our bullpen for the NYY series.  He can even cough up a couple more runs now, as long as he lasts 7.  It looks good since he only has 40 pitches through 3 IP.

by punkrawka on Jul 26, 2007 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Trax, you're going 7
That's it, don't even ask to come out, you're going 7, unless you can go longer. That is all.

Weird A-Rod stuff
If A-Rod hits a HR in the suspended game tomorrow, it counts as #493, not #500, but he would have 500 HR, since every HR he's hit since then would be pushed up a slot. Weird.

"You wouldn't anticipate Fahey being able to hit it out there..." REALLY, Rick? Ya think?

Then he blows what scant shred of credibility he had by saying Fahey has established himself as a contact hitter while Tejada's been out. Uh, Rick? Do the numbers 1-8-2 mean anything to you, because that's what Fahey was batting at the beginning of the game.

That's nothing
On the YES network you can get scintilating conversations like the one between Joe Girardi & Ken Singleton yammering away over who had the most career triples (Girardi-26, Singleton-25).

And Girardi made a point of letting everyone know that that does NOT count the one that beat the Braves in '96.

D-Rays
Everybody keeps saying how the D-Ray's farm system will allow them to overtake the O's soon, but this a god awful team.  They have a few really good, young position players (Upton, Crawford, and Young) and two good pitchers (Kazmir and Shields).  But Baldelli is always injured.  Dukes is crazy.  They've graduated their best talent with exception of Longoria (although I'm not terribly familiar with their farm system).  I guess what I'm saying is that I'm not terribly worried about the D-Rays.

by birdman on Jul 26, 2007 3:47 PM EDT reply actions

They've got a lot of good pitchers coming
Or potentially good, anyway. I can't remember all of them, but Niemann from Rice is one, Price (the guy they drafted this year) is another, and there are two or three more. If two of those guys pan out, plus James Shields and Scott Kazmir, well, you could do worse.q

by pipkin on Jul 26, 2007 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah...
don't know too much about their pitching, but they STILL have a lot of dudes coming up through the ranks.

scoring runs is not their problem.

by jq higgins on Jul 26, 2007 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I can't believe I forgot Price
Especially since I saw him pitch 3-4 times this year.  I just had conversation about him with a friend and I'll say to you what I said to him, Price isn't going to be anything special.  His fastball is good but nothing great.  His change is good (about 84-77 mph) but he kind of trouble locating his breaking stuff.  But he's big and left handed so scouts pre-inclined to love him.  I have a friend who's tutored him and he's a really nice guy.  Completely level head and modest.  I really hope he does well but I think he's back of the rotation type of guy.  I remember Keith Law saying he doesn't understand all the hoopla about him and I agree.

And the biggest problem with the Rays is that they can build a good young core (and in fact, they've already have done that).  But they don't have the money to add 2-4 free agents pieces to push them to the top.  Even the A's who rely on their farm system to fill out almost their entire roster struggle at times.  And this is assuming that's the D-Ray's new management is as good in evaluating talent as Billy Beane or Terry Ryan.  The Braves have a really good farm system but even they have to dip into the free agent fill in spots.  Until the Ray's increase their payroll by a lot, I'm not worried about the D-Rays.

by birdman on Jul 26, 2007 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions

brignac...
is the other big positional prospect that get mentioned a lot.  a guy names elliott johnson at aaa will supposedly be the guy at 2b next year.  fwiw, bp doesn't even rate price in tb's top ten.  their big pitchers are jeffrey niemann, wade davis, hellickson and mcgee.  they seem to think mcgee and davis will make a pretty brutal combo w/ kaz and shields.

tampa seems to get some decent return on castoffs like johnny gomes, brendan harris, dioner navarro and ty wigginton.  hell, the aki iwamura signing was pretty solid, too.

by jq higgins on Jul 26, 2007 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Aki
was a sneaky good pick up.  He doesn't hit a 3rd baseemen but he's a good guy for the leadoff spot and the D-Rays didn't pay much for him.

But I guess their farm system is still in pretty good shape despite losing Young, Upton, and Dukes.  They'll probably have another top 3 pick again in the 2008 draft given how crappy they are in 2007.  Ok, maybe you have me a little more worried now, but I still think the O's can escape the basement for the next few years.

Don't know the generations of these other gents, but my generation freely uses "girl" for women (young somen? whatever.) well into their 20s, and boy for men (young men?) of a similar age (though I notice that its more likely to be a girl and a guy than a girl and a boy, generally...the sexism of our society still at work, I suppose)), whereas people of your generation tend to much less.

here's the game
and this is assuming the motherfuckers don't score any more non-runs.

8th Inning
-Markakis: single to center; 0 outs
-Gomez: single to right, Markakis to 3rd; 0 out
-Huff: GIDP 4-6-3, Markakis scores; 2 out
-Gibbons: strikes out looking; 3 out
End of 8th, 8-7 motherfuckers

9th Inning (Enter Rivera)
-Patterson: strikes out swinging (ball 4 feet above his head); 1 out
-Bako: strikes out looking (raelizes he's worthless and just gives up); 2 outs
-Payton: Grounds out 6-3 on first pitch; 3 outs

Game Over. Motherfuckers get a bullshit win.
