O's take Game 1. Pettitte stunned.

"What happened? I thought I was supposed to always beat the Orioles."

Not tonight Andy. Welcome to your season of discontent, playing for a sloppy, overbudget group of dickheads known as the Bronx Bummers.

I have nothing important to say, I just thought there might be folks hanging around on Saturday who'd want to chat about the victory before the game thread goes up.

So have at it, buckaroos. . One down, two to go!

yay!
that's all i want to say about that.  Millar is a demi-god.  Guthrie is a greater god.  Andy Pettitte, Captain Courageous and Mr. Torre can all suck it.

by the way
greetings from Scranton, PA, 2/3 the way from Alexandria to Cooperstown, where i'll be tomorrow and Sunday watching the greatest god being inducted into the Pantheon.  NOTHING WOULD BE BETTER than sweeping the fucking Spankees this weekend.  NOTHING.

That was awesome.
Even John Parrish came to play.

You don't know how good this is...
I'm at the Annual Family Reunion thing (60 peeps this year plus-minus, Fri. eve to Sunday p.m.) and all the dickweed Sawx fans and Yerkee jerks were hardly out of their cars before noxious fumes were covering the immediate area ("So, Titov, I see the Orioles are having a good year-- again!").

My response: We have two of the 7 best starting pitchers in baseball-- and you don't.

[Luckily, there are a number of RightSox fans here, too (the Chicago branch), and they know what sucking is all about (e.g. 32 runs in a day). Nothing but simpatico nods of recognition from them.]

Anyway, thank you, Jeremy, for keepin' on keepin' on! OK now, let's get crazy, a la duck: SWEEP! SWEEP! SWEEP!

Hey Petey: enjoy THIS!

p.s. Pettitte bucking for non-a-hole status:
"This guy is a great pitcher," Pettitte said. "He won the pitchers duel. I wasn't able to do it tonight."
Hey Petey: enjoy THIS!

Can't wait
to see the "2 of the Best 7 Pitchers in Baseball 2007" banner raised next year!

Break up the bullpen
One more outing like last night and Bradford out of here. That goes double for Walker, Shuey and Rob Bell. Let's get back to last years pen. Jeez!
I thought it happier to be dead / to die for a World Series victory, than live for mediocerity.

by chalkdust on Jul 28, 2007 7:49 AM EDT reply actions

Our relievers really came through yesterday
Parrish, Shuey, Walker, Bradford. Props to them - they held down the fort when we needed them.

No better feeling than when we deliver during a rivalry game. (I'm sure the Yankees see us as little retarded brothers instead of rivals though).

by dfleis on Jul 28, 2007 1:09 PM EDT reply actions

We'll need them to hold it down A LOT this weekend
with Brian "Can't go six" Burress and Daniel "I forget how to pitch half of the time" Cabrera on the mound for the next two games.

Buck up, bullpen.  Show us you mean business.

by PhilR8 on Jul 28, 2007 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions

No kidding
With Burres and Cabrera pitching... I can feel an impending train wreck. Usually leave it to the Orioles to make other teams look great... ie, ARod's 500th will most likely be replayed for years down the line coming off of Burres or Cabrera. And everyone will talk about how Clemens was worth all the money after his brilliant performance against us. (By being pessimistic, I'm playing mind games with God.)

So, you heading to Cooperstown?

by dfleis on Jul 28, 2007 1:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Impending train wreck....
Yep. Last night was the game to win with Guthrie pitching. I'm not anticipating these next two.

RE:
I'd take both of them over Trachsel.  Hopefully with the offday, Trax gets skipped against Boston.

YES!
Great minds think alike...

For some reason, I think Burres does OK tonight.

I think now that he's eating at the big kids' table, he wants to show he belongs.

RE:
Although it doesn't get mentioned much; Burres has actually done a really good job for us considering what was expected of him.  Don't get me wrong, I'm not sure he'll be much more than a spot starter/long reliever; but he's done everything and more that could be expected of him.

And maybe I'm just doing some wishful thinking; but I'm hoping that after his last start; Danny is ready to go through one of his annual second half tear.  That way I can once again get my hopes up for next year; just to have them stepped on.

in completely unrelated other news...
Donnie Sadler suspended 50 games for the roids. This should be good PR for Barry Bonds, seeing that Donnie Sadler sucked horribly under the influence, while Barry Bonds did not.

see this is the deal
There are still too many people that think steroids MAKE YOU GOOD. You have to BE GOOD. Steroids simply elevate a lot of things -- power, recovery time from injury, etc.

by Scott Christ on Jul 28, 2007 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Recovery time from injury...
is the key everyone forgets. THAT'S the real benefit from steroids in baseball to me, especially for pitchers. I'm really surprised more pitchers haven't been popped.

Make sure the O's sweep these
Yankee dickheads, please? We at Royals Review were ill-equipped to do so with Odie Perez and Scott Elarton run out to the mound. The O's can do it. Burres is due for a bizarrely-good outing. Cabrera might not pitch well but maybe he'll hit Jeter in the face (fist or baseball, either one).

by NHZ @ Camden Chat on Jul 28, 2007 5:20 PM EDT reply actions

I like Royals Review
But you are a squatter there, much as BaseballSavant is here. Not that I'm against that, in fact, I think it's great.

However, lets be honest. Shed the blue facade and fess up that your interests here in these games are really with the Red Sox.

by drj on Jul 28, 2007 6:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Without meaning to be rude,
there is no "blue facade," really. I've developed a rather large affection for the Royals since I've been writing about them since this spring. The Red Sox are my favorite team, yes, but the Royals are the team I cover. I enjoy both. Simple as that.

And, hell yeah, beat the Yankees and that does help the Red Sox, true. And that's fine. I always, however, keep on an eye on the O's because I lived down in Ellicott City until I was ten.

In other words, I like the O's even when they ain't playing the Yankees. And, let's face it, other than Yankee fans, who does have any affection for the Jankees and that Juicer Clemens?

by NHZ @ Camden Chat on Jul 28, 2007 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't take that as rude
My comment wasn't meant to be rude either. I just know you root for the BoSox.

by drj on Jul 28, 2007 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I like Clemens!
First of all, he's great, and second of all, I find him funny. Chucking bats at Mike Piazza? Bahaha. He's a piece of work.

by Scott Christ on Jul 30, 2007 3:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Hate to disagree with ya, boss
but Clemens is a tool.

Hell, not even all Yankee fans
Back in '03 he'd announce every hour on the hour to anyone who was listening (and many who weren't) that he was retiring. Then after he collects all his lovely parting gifts it's, "Fuck you, I'm going to Houston. Oh, and I'm taking Pettitte with me."

Based on my knowledge of how the NYY fan's mind works (I live in NY), I'd say it's an attitude of "If he helps us win, good. If not, good-bye." than actual affection

I like today's lineup
B Roberts
C Patterson
N Markakis
K Millar
M Tejada
A Huff
R Hernandez
J Payton
C Gomez

As good as it gets for our team.

Any lineup
that doesn't have Fahey or Horseface Killah on it is an improvement.
