Gameday Thread: 08/12 Boston Red Sox @ Baltimore Orioles

Still cleaning the basement. Argggh.

It's Trachsel, who actually has pitched well of late, vs. Schilling, going for his first win in two months.

Gametime 1:35pm.

GO O's!

Time Warner Cable...
fuck you for having a problem with MLB Extra Innings 10 fucking minutes before game time.  Ted Turner sucks.

More on our awesome fan base
"It feels like a home game here," said Boston catcher Jason Varitek, who is 2-for-7 in this series following an 0-for-13 slump. "They give us a spark that other teams can't get when they're on the road."

Having a bad team for 9 years in a row isn't enough.. now we can also boast one of the most pathetic fan bases in the league.

Hopefully...
10 years from now, when they're buried in 4th place and we've been winning and have competent ownership, it'll be the other way around.  And Matt Wieters will be saying that about Fenway.

Or maybe I should slap myself.

I have heard
reassurances, actually many, from close sources (Buck Martinez does the morning show) that Wieters WILL be signed...Boras always waits until the last minute to get anything done.

well that's how Boras is
so that's not so much what worries me...it's that I know how the O's are too. God damn better get this guy

The O's knew the Weiter's price before negotiations and the draft.  I highly doubt that they changed their minds about the price between the pre-draft and now.

by birdman on Aug 12, 2007 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I always wondered if
the RS sucked, is the RS fan base so rabid that they would still travel to camden yards in bunches?  And if O's were awesome and RS sucked, is the O's fan base so rabid that they would travel to Bos in droves to attend games in an otherwise empty Fenway Park?

GAH GARY YOU ARE WRONG
"Moneyball" is not about OBP. It's about exploiting inefficiencies in the market. It just so happened that at the time Lewis wrote that book that Beane was focused on High-OBP guys that other people didn't value for various reasons (they were fat, couldn't play D, had no power, etc.). Now EVERYONE is aware of those guys, and Beane has had to find a new angle. And whatever his angle is, it didn't work this year.

It pisses me off when sportswriters/broadcasters show their ignorance on this subject. It's obvious none of them have read the book, which is better as a business book than a baseball book anyway.

Sweet Mother of God...
...WHY is Jay Gibbons not on the DL? Why, needing shoulder surgery, is he taking a key ph AB in the 9th inning? The labrum may not be as critical as for a pitcher but it can't possibly be HELPING him. Why? Why not replace him on the roster if he's having surgery on Tuesday?

Sometimes I really really really wonder if there is any common sense or logic behind this team. Gibbons cannot play. Gibbons cannot contribute. Gibbons should be on the DL and be replaced by an OF who might contribute something. But no. He'll stay till he actually goes under the knife.

Pfeh.

It was kind of insane how many Sox fans there were.  I mean wow, almost everyone around me was a Sox fan minus the season ticket holders that I know.  Yankee fans are jerks, but the Boston fans were obnoxious thinking it was their ballpark.  Have some damn respect, I have been to a ton of games where Boston has alot of people, but it was shocking how many Boston fans there were.

someone mentioned it before
but why the HELL is Jay Gibbons up here still?
Let's get this equation straight...

1.1: An injured Moises Alou is more productive than the average major leaguer. That's why he plays through eternal injuries.

1.2: An uninjured Jay Gibbons is average at best. An injured Jay Gibbons is on par with an injured Jeff Reboulet.

Anyway, in other strange news... The Colorado Rockies have acquired another former Oriole... Geronimo Gil. I guess things could be worse for us, we could reacquire our own old lousy players.

by dfleis on Aug 12, 2007 6:57 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

That was me...
...and I am still left utterly puzzled. Jon Knott. JR House. Val Majewski. Adam Stern. Any of these guys could've been moved up to take Gibbons' roster spot. Why are we waiting till tuesday? Why are leaving our bench a man short when we already ridded ourselves of the only competent utility IF we had?

There's no rhyme or reason behind any of this, and you have to look at all these moves together. Supposedly a team's moves should add up to a coherent picture reflective of a cogent plan. The Os moves don't, and they haven't since Gillick left.

I went to this one, too. Good call, me!
Great seats (Sec. 30, behind home), nice weather, great comeback! Best moment: after Miggi's donger, looking behind us at the irritating Sawx fehnz three rows up: they're in shock, deer in the headlights! We're high-fiving every stranger wearing orange, and they're sitting there in pissed pants.

Kevbo's walk-off? THERE IS A GOD!!!...AND HE'S NOT NECESSARILY SAWX FEHN!!!

Re % of Sawx fehnz on hand: it looked between 2/3 and 3/4 to us. Most of them were fine, just folks at a ball game wearing their team's stuff, no problem with that.

But (1) this casually walking-around-like-we-own-the-place thing that many of them (probably even  subconsciously) project? Man, is that depressing to see or what? And

(2) there is among them a contingent of real dipstick ice-holes, no question about it. Exiting after the game in a crowded corridor:

Titov [to no one in particular]: Ah well, just another weekend in Baltinmore-- and we take another series from the Red Sox. Jeez, same old stuff.

Sawx fehn: Up yours.

Titov: Say, thanks for coming down, have a nice trip home.

Sawx fehn: Up yours.

Titov: Seriously, I really root for good baseball most of all. Thanks for coming down, and good luck.

Sawx fehn: Up yours.

No joke. Sure, I was joshing them around, needling just a little-- but hey, I'd been hearing raucous Sawx cheers all day, I'm in my own park, and not being hostile or agressive in any way. And that's what I hear back?  These types are as friendly as they are clever, and they also think showing up means they own the place. Gee, kinda like...oh what's the use, he wouldn't get it anyway.

In any case, a great day-- and I'm just so sorry I can't add "and a good time was had by all."

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha !

Hey Petey: enjoy THIS!
