Projecting Politics and Baseball with Nate Silver

A great interview with Nate Silver from Baseball Prospectus and fivethirtyeight.com. I have a giant celebrity crush on him. Also this new Toy Department section on the Sun's website has been quite good. Good job, Sun!

An Open letter to Colin Cowherd

On Tuesday April 7, 2009 ESPN Radio’s Colin Cowherd ranted about the city of Baltimore for booing Mark Teixeira. He stated that Orioles’ fans should have never expected Tex to sign in Baltimore because Mark wouldn’t want to go to a team that has "no shot" of being in the post season in 6 years. Cowherd was outspoken against Orioles’ fans who had signs using the word "hate" in reference to Teixeira, but he referred to all of Baltimore as "small" and "petty" calling the Orioles "irrelevant."

One staff ace unable to strike anyone out or make it through the fifth: ...$14 million One dynamo first baseman going 0-for-4 with a walk in his debut opposing his childhood team: ...$20 million One overrated shortstop skipping throws to first base: ...$20 million Spanking one of your arch rivals on Opening Day in the best ballpark in baseball: .................... Priceless.

When the AL and NL broke into divisions, the Orioles dominated the new AL East. In the first three years of division play (1969-71), Weaver's Orioles finished first three times, winning 109, 108, and 101 games. Baltimore went 9-0 in the first three AL Championship Series. They finished first five times in the first six years of the AL East. The advent of free agency hit Baltimore hard in the '70's, but the Orioles stayed aloft on the strength of their farm system. They won 88 or more games in every nonstrike season between 1968-83.

BALTIMORE ORIOLES - The Boston Globe A little Oriole pride. The article itself is great, but the very first comment following it is also a must-read.

Orioles fans will once again enjoy the Oriole cartoon that became a Baltimore Sun icon in the 1960s and 1970s. The new cartoon will debut Tuesday, 4/7, after opening day and will be featured in the Baltimore Sun sports section and on baltimoresun.com. The cartoon features a caricature of the Orioles mascot reflecting the outcome of the previous day's game. The customized cartoon will run after every game during the 2009 season. This season’s cartoon will be drawn by cartoonist Mike Ricigliano - "Ricig" to readers.
