Birds Up, O's Down
Birds Up, O's Down for September 20th - 25th
Who's hot and who's not for your Baltimore Orioles:
| Rotation | ||
Zach Britton | Followed up a great start with a much less effective outing. Got the "win," but that doesn't cover the fact he labored through 5 innings while allowing 5 earned runs (and walking 4 batters). |
Jeremy Guthrie | Not the most solid of outings Saturday in Detroit, but it got the job done. He's been pitching better of late. |
Tommy Hunter | See above (although Detroit is arguably a more fierce lineup than Boston right now). |
Brian Matusz | Sigh. ERA up again after his most recent start. But its okay guys! Buck says he's going to go home this offseason and magically figure it all out. |
Alfredo Simon | Although the team lost the game, Simon pitched a solid 8 innings, allowing 3 earned runs on 6 hits (just 1 walk). |
Rick VandenHurk | Not making much of a case to be a starter next year. |
Birds Up, O's Down for September 14th - 19th
Who's hot and who's not for your Baltimore Orioles:
| Rotation | ||
Zach Britton | Absolutely brilliant start versus the Angels. Over 7 innings, Zach allowed just 1 run on 3 hits while striking out 7 batters. That's the Britton we all remember from earlier in the season! |
Jeremy Guthrie | Guts got two starts this week and recorded wins in both (he's now on a three-start winning streak). He was somewhat more hittable against Boston than he was in Tampa, but he was (for the most part) effective in both starts. |
Tommy Hunter | Notched his best start since coming over to the Orioles in the Koji Uehara trade. Went 7 innings and was tagged with 7 hits, but did not allow a run. |
Brian Matusz | Sigh. |
Alfredo Simon | Knocked around by the Angels, allowing 6 earned runs over 5 innings (including three home runs). |
Rick VandenHurk | Did not pitch. Gets the start in tonight's game. |
Birds Up, O's Down for September 5th - 13th
Sorry about the tardiness of your favorite weekly article. "Upgrade" to Windows 7 caused all sorts of computer issues. Better late than never, here's who's hot and who's not for your Baltimore Orioles:
| Rotation | ||
Zach Britton | Two starts...nearly identical lines in both. Four earned runs over 5 innings. It isn't awful, but it isn't getting the job done completely. Needs to find a way to go deeper into games on a consistent basis. |
Jeremy Guthrie | Guts knows how to win! In his lone start this week, he allowed just 3 hits over 7 innings. |
Tommy Hunter | Started twice and took two losses after allowing 4 earned runs (5 and 6 runs total) in each game. Allowing far too many home runs. |
Brian Matusz | Made one start and immediately allowed 5 runs. ERA is cruising up towards 10.....can it get any worse? |
Alfredo Simon | First start this week was short and marred with control issues (6 walks in just 4 innings). Last night was a good rebound (2 walks to 9 strikeouts). |
Rick VandenHurk | Suppose the start last week was to determine his viability for the starting rotation. After just 2.1 innings, nobody is convinced. |
Labor Day Birds Up, O's Down
| Rotation | ||
Zach Britton | Gold star for Britton as he notched his third straight solid start, allowing 2 earned runs on 4 hits. Still high in the walk department, but no significant complaints. |
Jeremy Guthrie | Pitched a decent game in Toronto before totally losing it during Sunday's game. Line may only say 3 ER, but Guts allowed runners to reach base left and right via XBHs and walks. |
Tommy Hunter | Sigh....at least Koji hasn't been incredible for Texas. |
Brian Matusz | Yet another game where he leaves with an ERA greater than when he started. The likely result of throwing Tillman-like meatballs all game. |
Jo-Jo Reyes | Had to debate who to give Mr. Yuck to this week...Matusz or Reyes. Matusz won since nobody really expected Reyes to be any good. How bad was he? Seven earned in less than 3 innings. |
Alfredo Simon | Pummeled by Tampa, allowing 6 earned runs in 5 innings (also walked 4 batters). Guess it isn't hard to tee off on a guy when he's only throwing one below-average pitch though. |
Birds Up, O's Down for August 22-28
The Orioles went 6-1 the week of August 22nd thanks mostly to good starting pitching, but the offense held its own as well. Even bad teams have good stretches, and while my happiness with each win was tempered by our recent tragedy, it was still good to see the guys put together a few good games.
| Rotation | ||
Zach Britton | Welcome back, rook! Britton returned from the disabled list with a solid, but not great, outing against the Twins, then straight up dominated the Yankees last Friday, pitching seven shutout innings, giving up four singles and one walk while striking out five. |
Jeremy Guthrie | Guthrie made one start and it was a good one. On August 24th he pitched seven innings and gave up just one run while striking out five and walking two. |
Tommy Hunter | Hunter pitched against the Yankees and would have had a good night if not for those three pesky home runs he gave up. He did last seven innings, so that's something. |
Brian Matusz | Brian Matusz's ERA is 9.07. And that's all I have to say about that. |
Jo-Jo Reyes | Proving that he's capable of beating a bad team every now and then, Reyes held the Twins to one run over six innings despite walking four. |
Alfredo Simon | The Saucy One had a good week, pitching an eight-inning gem in Minnesota with a career high eight strikeouts. He was pretty good against the Yankees yesterday, too, but that's for next week's list. |
Birds Up, O's Down for August 15 - 21
| Rotation | ||
Jeremy Guthrie | Skipped his normal turn in the rotation due to shoulder stiffness. |
Tommy Hunter | His ERA with the Orioles is over 6 and he's striking out just 2 per 9 innings. Did have one good start this week, but quickly followed it up by getting hammered in Anaheim. |
Brian Matusz | As Eat More Esskay pointed out, Brian entered yesterday's game with an 8.63 ERA and still managed to leave the game with a higher ERA than he started. |
Jo-Jo Reyes | 5 innings pitched. 5 earned runs. Orioles lose. |
Alfredo Simon | Approximately 5 innings pitched. 5 earned runs. Orioles lose again. |
Birds Up, O's Down for August 8 - 14
Who's hot and who's not for the Baltimore Orioles:
| Rotation | ||
Jeremy Guthrie | Fairly mediocre week for Guts. Ten earned runs (3 home runs allowed) and just 3 strikeouts (with 2 walks). |
Tommy Hunter | It wasn't a great outing, but if the Orioles can get 4 earned runs over 6.2 innings in every start from Hunter, they'd at least be more in the game than they have with some of the other starters they've trotted out this year. |
Jo-Jo Reyes | First start was weak, but the second was a great effort. The O's tried to lose the game, but 1 ER over 6 innings from Reyes was excellent. |
Alfredo Simon | Alfredo Sauce was up to his usual antics this week allowing 4 runs on 11 hits (3 walks) over 4+ innings. In a month, Simon has added over 1 run to his ERA. |
| Chris Tillman | Tillman was also up to his usual antics this week. A week after allowing 2 runs on 4 hits over 7 innings, he allows 6 runs on 8 hits in 2+ innings. Gross. |
Birds Up, O's Down for July 25 - Aug 7
| Rotation | ||
Jake Arrieta | Out for the season with elbow surgery to remove a bone spur/fibrous mass. Probably for the best since he's been dealing with this pain for awhile and it is possible it was hindering his control (8 walks in two starts). |
Brad Bergesen | Better suited for the bullpen. Allowed 6 runs (4 earned) in a 3 inning start, but followed that up with 3 good innings out of the pen. Sandwiched a random relief appearance in there where he allowed 3 hits and only got one out. |
Zach Britton | Zach's lucky he's injured, otherwise he'd be getting Mr. Yuk. Was getting absolutely mauled before hitting the DL with a shoulder strain. Why can't we have prospects that actually turn into real baseball players?? |
Jeremy Guthrie | Didn't get traded and hasn't performed particularly well since the deadline. One good start, one poor start, and one mediocre start. Sigh. |
Tommy Hunter | Another guy who should probably stick to the pen. Incredibly small sample size, but his stuff didn't look good enough for him to remain a starter. |
Alfredo Simon | Was the O's best starter for a while, but that has worn off somewhat. He's gotten progressively less effective in his last three starts. |
Chris Tillman | Okay, that last start was pretty nice. We'll see if it lasts. |
