Recap: Arizona vs. Cincinnati

Sports Network | September 14, 2008

Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Micah Owings, who was acquired from Arizona earlier in the week, hit a go-ahead, pinch-hit RBI double in the 10th to give the Reds a 3-2 victory over the Diamondbacks.

Danny Richar had a pinch-hit single and scored the game-tying run in the ninth while Ryan Hanigan had two hits for the Reds, who have won four of six.

Edinson Volquez threw a quality start, giving up two runs on five hits and six walks, while fanning eight over six frames. David Weathers (3-6) pitched a scoreless ninth for the victory, and Francisco Cordero pitched a perfect 10th for his 30th save of the season.

Randy Johnson pitched well despite not factoring into the decision. The southpaw went six innings and allowed one run on five hits while walking two and striking out three. Tony Pena (1-2) blew the save in the ninth and allowed the go-ahead run to score in the 10th to earn the loss.

Justin Upton had two doubles and scored both Arizona runs while Adam Dunn had an RBI for the Diamondbacks, losers in seven out of eight.

With the loss, coupled with the Dodgers win earlier Saturday, Arizona now sits 4 1/2 games out of first in the NL West.

Pena came in to save the game for Arizona in the ninth but ran into some trouble. Richar started the frame with an infield single, and Javier Valentin sent him to third with a pinch-hit single up the middle. Corey Patterson flied out to right and Richar held at third, but Upton's throw to the plate went awry, allowing Richar to come home.

Cincinnati then forged ahead in the tenth. Chris Dickerson worked a two-out walk, and the Reds put in former Arizona pitcher Owings to pinch-hit and he promptly plated the game-winning run with a double.

The Reds got on the board in the first. Jerry Hairston, Jr. worked a walk and two batters later Joey Votto hit an RBI double to the gap in left-center field for a 1-0 lead.

Volquez got out of a jam in the third. Johnson worked a leadoff walk, and Augie Ojeda was hit by a pitch two batters later. Another walk to Chris Young loaded the bases for Dunn, who grounded into a 1-2-3 double play to end the threat.

The Diamondbacks tied the game in the fifth. Upton hit a leadoff double, and Stephen Drew singled him over to third with one out. Ojeda followed with an RBI groundout to knot the game at 1-1.

Arizona took the lead in the seventh. Upton led off with a double and Tony Clark worked a walk to knock Volquez out of the game. Jeremy Affeldt came on in relief, and Drew sacrificed the runners to second and third. Young walked to load the bases, and Dunn was hit by a pitch to give the Diamondbacks a 2-1 lead.

The Reds lead the season series 3-2...Owings was the player to be named later in the trade that sent Dunn from Cincinnati to Arizona earlier in the season...Votto had a double, his 27th of the season...Johnson still sits at 294 career wins after receiving the no-decision Saturday.
