Recap: Cincinnati vs. St. Louis

Sports Network | September 16, 2008

Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - Corey Patterson had two hits and two runs driven in to propel the Reds to a 7-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals at Great American Ball Park.

Edwin Encarnacion drove in three runs on a bases-loaded double while seven different players scored a run for the Reds, winners of three straight.

Bronson Arroyo (15-10) continued to pitch well, throwing seven innings of two- run ball on five hits while striking out four for the win.

Braden Looper (12-13) gave up four runs on six hits and a walk, with five strikeouts, to suffer the loss.

Troy Glaus and Aaron Miles each finished with two hits, including a home run for the Cardinals, who have dropped six in a row.

Glaus gave the Cardinals a 1-0 edge leading off the second with his 24th homer of the year.

The Reds loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth on two singles and a walk, and Encarnacion cashed in on the opportunity, lining a double down the left field line to clear the bases and give Cincinnati a 3-1 advantage.

Miles brought St. Louis within one, hitting his fourth homer of the year off Arroyo in the seventh.

Cincinnati got some insurance in the home seventh. Patterson reached on a one- out infield single and Paul Bako singled him over to third. Danny Richar hit what looked to be a double play ball but barely beat out the throw to first, allowing a run to score.

The Reds again connected with the bases loaded in the eighth, as Patterson hit a two-run double off Ron Villone to increase the lead to four. Two batters later, Javier Valentin drew a walk with the bases full to force home another run.

Despite the loss, St. Louis leads the season series 6-4...The Cardinals are now five games behind NL wild card leaders Philadelphia and Milwaukee...Prior to Tuesday's game the Reds had played in seven straight one-run contests.
