Recap: Arizona vs. San Francisco

Sports Network | September 17, 2008

Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Dan Haren dominated the Giants with nine innings of shutout ball to send the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 2-0 victory over San Francisco, in the second contest of a four-game series from Chase Field.

Haren (15-8) was masterful in scattering four hits and walking two while fanning a season-high 12 batters to snap a four-start winless streak.

Chris Snyder and Stephen Drew provided all the offense Haren needed with a solo home run each for Arizona, which has taken the first two games from San Francisco. The D'Backs remained at a 4 1/2-game deficit in the division and kept from falling further back of the Dodgers, who were 6-2 victors in Pittsburgh earlier Tuesday.

Matt Cain (8-13) allowed both home runs among seven total hits while striking out seven and walking none in a tough loss. Pablo Sandoval had two of the Giants four hits.

Snyder led off the third with his 16th home run of the season, a shot over the left field wall, while Haren retired the first 11 batters of the game before a two-out single from Sandoval in the fourth.

A two-out walk to Eugenio Velez in the fifth and a subsequent stolen base was as far as any runner would get for San Francisco, and Drew led off the sixth with his 18th longball of the season for a 2-0 mark.

Consecutive one-out singles from Randy Winn and Sandoval in the ninth threatened the shutout but Bengie Molina hit a fly-ball to center and Travis Ishikawa went down swinging to end the game.

Arizona leads the season series 9-7...Wednesday's scheduled starters are Jonathan Sanchez (9-10) for the Giants and Brandon Webb (20-7) for the D'Backs...The D'Backs are 7-16 in their last 23 games...Haren is now 11-4 at home this season...Haren needed 117 pitches, throwing 83 for strikes, to go the distance...Snyder and Drew both had two hits.
