Sports Network | September 19, 2008
Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Chris Iannetta and Clint Barmes each recorded solo homers behind six effective innings from Jorge De La Rosa, as the Rockies upended the playoff-hopeful Diamondbacks, 3-2, in the first of three games between the NL West foes.
De La Rosa (9-8) allowed just one run on three hits and three walks with six strikeouts for Colorado, which has won four of five after losing seven straight. Garrett Atkins added three hits and an RBI in the win.
Highly touted prospect Max Scherzer (0-3) has still yet to register a big league win, allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk with eight strikeouts in a six-inning start. Adam Dunn and Mark Reynolds each homered for Arizona, which was coming off a four-game sweep of the Giants.
The loss was the D-Backs' 11th straight on the road as they sit four games behind the division-leading Dodgers, who play the Giants later Friday night.
The Rockies called on Brian Fuentes to close out a 3-1 lead in the ninth, but Reynolds' one-out solo blast on a full count made it a one-run game.
Chris Snyder then singled to left and Fuentes hit David Eckstein with a pitch to put the tying run on second base. After pinch-hitter Tony Clark struck out, Stephen Drew worked a walk to load the bases, only to have Chris Young strike out on three pitches for Fuentes' 29th save of the year.
Atkins singled home Matt Holliday with two outs in the first, and Iannetta led off the second with his 18th homer to put the Rockies up 2-0.
After Arizona left the bases loaded in the fourth, Barmes blasted a two-out, solo shot over the left field wall in the bottom half.
Dunn put the D-Backs on the board in the sixth with a lead-off moonshot behind the center field fence.
Dunn's 38 homers ranks second in the majors behind Philadelphia's Ryan Howard (46)...Scherzer has made nine relief appearances and six starts for Arizona this season...Arizona is 31-44 away from Chase Field this season...The D-Backs had won 10 of the previous 12 encounters with Colorado this season.
