Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - The New York Yankees have signed left-handed reliever Damaso Marte to a three-year contract with a club option for 2012.
Marte was acquired by the Yankees in the July 26 trade that also brought outfielder Xavier Nady from Pittsburgh, in exchange for a quartet of players -- highlighted by pitching prospect Jeff Karstens.
The 33-year-old Marte posted a 5.40 earned run average and 1-3 record in 25 appearances for New York in 2008. In 72 appearances between the Pirates and Yankees, Marte went 5-3 with a 4.02 ERA and held opponents to a .214 average.
Marte has been heavily used over the past five seasons, making the fourth-most appearances (352) in the majors.
In nine MLB seasons with Seattle, Pittsburgh, the White Sox and Yankees, Marte has a mark of 22-24 with 36 saves and a 3.29 ERA in 519 games. Opposing batters have hit .222 against Marte during his career.
