Baylor returns to Rockies as hitting coach

Sports Network | November 24, 2008

Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Don Baylor, the first manager of the Colorado Rockies, returned to the team on Monday as he was named hitting coach for the 2009 season.

The 59-year-old Baylor was manager of the Rockies from 1993-96 and for the Chicago Cubs from 2000-02. He was also with the Mets as a bench coach (2003-04) and as a hitting coach.

During Baylor's tenure as manager in Colorado, the Rockies compiled a 440-469 record.

Former major league manager Jim Tracy was named as bench coach of the Rockies. He most recently managed the Pittsburgh Pirates (2006-07) after completing a five-year run (2001-05) as skipper of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Rockies also named Rich Dauer third base coach, Jim Wright bullpen coach and Brian Jordan as the strength and conditioning coach.

The only coaches to return to manager Clint Hurdle's staff from the 2007 season are pitching coach Bob Apodaca and first base coach Glenallen Hill. Third base coach Mike Gallego, bench coach Jamie Quirk and hitting coach Alan Cockrell were not retained.

Colorado finished with a 74-88 record last season, one year after reaching the World Series for the first time in franchise history.
