Cards' Carpenter back on DL

Sports Network | August 15, 2008

Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter was placed back on the 15-day disabled list Friday, retroactive to August 11, with a right posterior shoulder strain.

Carpenter was in the midst of his third start of the season Sunday when the right-hander called catcher Yadier Molina out to the mound with one away in the sixth. Carpenter grabbed near his right shoulder in explaining the injury and was removed after allowing four runs -- two earned -- in 5 1/3 innings while being credited with the 6-2 loss to the Cubs.

The oft-injured Carpenter missed 270 games dating back to last season following Tommy John surgery on his pitching elbow. He was coming off back-to- back no-decisions before suffering yet another setback.

The 2005 NL Cy Young Award winner has a career mark of 100-70 and a 4.08 earned run average in 249 games, including 232 starts, for Toronto and St. Louis.

In a related move, the Cardinals activated outfielder Brian Barton from the 15-day DL. Barton hit .246 with a pair of home runs and 11 RBI in 63 games with St. Louis before being sidelined on July 6 with a fracture in his right wrist.
