Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - The Toronto Blue Jays optioned struggling right-handed pitcher Shaun Marcum to Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday, the day after the starter had a rough outing against the Boston Red Sox.
The Blue Jays also recalled left-hander John Parrish from Syracuse on Saturday.
Marcum, 26, has gone 3-2 with a 6.19 ERA in seven starts since returning from the disabled list, where he spent a month with a right elbow injury. The Red Sox roughed him up for five runs on six hits in 3 2/3 innings on Friday in an 8-4 Boston win.
The right-hander started the season well before suffering the elbow injury, and still sports an 8-6 record and a 3.60 ERA on the season despite his recent struggles.
Left-hander David Purcey will take Marcum's next scheduled start on Wednesday at Tampa Bay, while Parrish will start in the series finale against the Rays on Thursday. Parrish, 30, is 1-0 with a 4.05 ERA in seven appearances -- four starts -- for Toronto this season.
