Gameday Thread: O's at Angels, 08/03

Erik Bedard, LH John Lackey, RH
     (5-3, 2.32) (8-4, 3.70)

Game time is 10:05 on CSN, ESPN2 and FSN West.

You may remember Lackey from game seven of the 2002 World Series. He's a hoss: 6-foot-6, 235 pounds, with a live fastball. For the first time in his major league career, he's pitching like it. Lackey's K/9 before this season: 5.74, 6.66, 6.54. This year: 9.20. That's a big jump, and one that's promising for the Angels as Lackey is still just 26 (he turns 27 in October). He's a homegrown guy, and he might be sticking around for the long haul. This has been his best big league season thus far. He does look something like a bloated Gary Gaetti.

But today, we have Bedard. Erik has not picked up a win since May 21 against the Phillies, but that's cheating, as he's pitched only thrice since then. He's lost his last two outings, though neither were truly bad performances or anything. The last one, at Chicago, was the worse of the two, as he clearly didn't have his best stuff. He did battle and kept the team in a position to win. At this point, that's all we can ask of anyone.

I had my doubts Bedard would return at the same level he left, but he's done quite well, and I really think that along with Cabrera, he's going to be part of a dynamic 1-2 punch at the top of the Baltimore rotation for years to come, unless they do something stupid like trade one of the two of them, which, you know, WHY NOT? If they waived Bedard tomorrow, it would seem almost fitting.

Every day I do one of these posts, I start feeling more and more like Harry Doyle early in Major League.

Great Quote...
Harry Doyle: So, the Indians have a runner. I think I'll wet my pants.

*snort*
Can I change it to "The Orioles just hit with runners in scoring position"?

you sure can!

Optimism
I'm gonna go ahead and be optimistic and say we end the losing streak tonight.

Bedard has now been back long enough to get his strength and his stuff back, so I will say he shuts down the Angels and the O's hit a couple homers, actually get a few hits with RISP and get a big win.
And not a win that looks like we are the worst team ever. No 1-0, 2-1, or 11-10, 9-8 wins that make you feel like we're going to lose all game.

Prediction: 5-2 O's

It takes a brave man
to actually predict the O's will win anything or play well enough to only allow 2 runs. God bless your optitmism. I wish you well.

one thing
Let's all be serious about something for a second here...

How UGLY is John Lackey.  Seriously.

Hmmm
Tejada is 0-3 with 3 K's...

Maybe he needs a day off?

Well CStone was right...
...it is 5-2. just not for the Os.

we can't
seem to stop ourselves from losing. this is just ridiculous.

and I do see signs of horrible managing... bedard should have been pulled a few batter ago, and not been allowed to load the bases again.

yep
I was thinking when will Maz stop the bleeding? Bedard was nearing 40 pitches in the inning and obviously struggling. I don't even get excited about this anymore. I just find myself passively watching. Waiting for the disaster.

Maz may be a big part of the problem
I've been complaining since last year that the guy doesn't know when to pull a pitcher... at some point he has to risk his bullpen to get a win.  I can't believe this guy has routinly allowed a starting pitcher to allow 5 runs in an inning and then let them play the next inning.   Further, it irritates me to no end when the guy tries to play matchups when the reliever you have is getting outs and you replace him with a unknown factor because of a right-handed/left-handed number game... it's getting very old.

absolutely
I don't know how many times (like tonight) I've seen Mazz pull Byrdak to put in Ray, right after Byrdak pitched a great at bat. How are these guys ever going to have experience against opposite handed batters without opportunities?

Or what about Kline? We know the numbers don't support moving Kline in to get left handers, or taking him out against righties. In fact, they support the opposite. So why does Mazz keep doing it?

And here's another one... Ray is in to start his second inning. That means he's already gone 1 1/3 innings, and now he's starting his second. What's up with that? I really thought we kept a lot of guys in the bullpen so we had some depth, and to keep guys from having to do this... but I guess I was wrong.

ESPN flashed the NL West Standings
They commented that it is impossible for someone to win the division while playing under .500 ball. I suspect that was an off the cuff remark, not necessarily based on fact. So is it possible? Can these teams basically play .500 ball against each other and blunder into a sub-.500 divisional winner? I'm rooting for that.
