Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

Gameday Thread: O's at Jays, 06/13

Adam Loewen, LH Roy Halladay, RH (0-0, 7.80) (7-1, 2.93)

Game time is 7:07 on CSN and RSN.

Loewen/Halladay II! Last time, Loewen MOWED DOWN THE JAYS, just as I'd predicted, and we won. This time, he's not just on Canadian TV, he's IN his homeland. No doubt the Loewen clan will pack the Skydome and root him on to another decisive victory over crappy Halladay, who can't handle the Oriole batsmanship.

This is going to be awesome. We're going to punk the Blue Jays. Adam Loewen is their daddy.

BTW
have we had this many repeat match-ups against any other opponents...  Benson/Janssen IV, Loewen/Halladay II...  I mean jeez.

Any stats heads out there...
who can cacluate the odds on the following scenarios:
  1. The odds that two pitchers would face off four times by June 13.
  2. The odds that one pitcher would end up with all four wins.
  3. The odds that the pitcher with the higher ERA would be the owner of all four wins.
I'm guessing that by the time you got down to #3 the odds would be very, very small.

looking ahead....
After his outing against Glavine, Loewen's next matchup will be against the ghost of Cy Young himself.

Actually
I believe that's in two appearances after Glavine... First he must get through Sandy Koufax.  It's like "Mike Tyson's Punchout" for NES... He has one more level to go to get to Cy.

Agreed
I never did beat Tyson, though.

tyson
you had to use specific routine to beat tyson.  in the first round, you had to wait until he punches, duck and then punch.  if tried to punch at any other time, you're dead.  i can't remember the strategy after that... basically it's just a free for all then if i remember correctly.  you had to read NES magazine to get the strategy to beat him.  beating tyson was one of my better adolescent moments.

Whatever
you all need to shutup, Tyson is impossible to beat and thats that. You're all not telling the truth if you say you beat him. It's impossible.

PS Tyson is beatable. I've heard tale of it being done, with people swearing to their Gods that they saw it. I do not know anyone that has done it. I may try again tonight.

Me too.
I'd love to know how many hours of my life I've wasted on video games...or maybe I don't.

I still like to hook up the ol' NES every once in awhile and beat up on Contra, Bionic Commando, and the Mario series.

Was that saracasim???
Maybe I'm missing the sarcasim, but in his last start Loewen gave up 5 ER, 11 hits, and 1 BB in 5 1/3.  Not sure how that would be considered even a mediocre start.  I still have faith that Loewen can and will be productive for us; but his ERA is absolutely Chen-ian at this point.  I think he's still a year away from being productive on the ML level.

by BirdFanInPhilly on Jun 13, 2006 11:59 AM EDT reply actions

Actually
His last start I believe he was Browered.  He really only gave up 2 ER in 5.1 innings, but our wonderful bullpen allowed all of AL's runners to score.  Granted he shouldn't have loaded the bases with 1 out in the 6th, but, I believe, The Todd promptly allowed all three to score before finally deciding to end the inning.  I gotta go with SC on this one and say it was a better-than-good-but-not-great outting.

by dayzd toe on Jun 13, 2006 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions

True...
I never liked the fact that all runners on base are charged to the starter; but still 11 hits and 1 BB in 5 1/3 isn't very good.  And even if you only credited him with the runner on 2nd and 3rd; that's still 4 ER in 5 1/3.

Todd has seemed to allow nearly all the inherited runners to score and then he suddenly gets more effective when his runners get on.

by BirdFanInPhilly on Jun 13, 2006 12:20 PM EDT up reply actions

True too...
but all 11 hits were singles.  And I thought the number was 13, all singles.

by dayzd toe on Jun 13, 2006 12:22 PM EDT up reply actions

browered...
yeah, halama and todd williams have done their fair share of browering.

i can think of a bunch of rodrigo lopez outings from earlier in the year where he was yanked w/ a couple dudes on the pen allowed them both to score.  i'm sure this applies to pretty much every starter...except for chen, what w/ his amazing base-clearing powers.

by jq higgins on Jun 13, 2006 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions

ALSO
That ERA is a bit bloated thanks to his first appearance in RELIEF where I think he got torched for a few runs and I don't recall he ever recorded an out.

by dayzd toe on Jun 13, 2006 12:21 PM EDT up reply actions

half sarcastic
and half that he should've been taken out after five innings and they shouldn't have pressed their luck.

5 ER isn't Chen-ian
You have to give up, like, 7+ ER to be Chenian.

by Stacey on Jun 13, 2006 8:07 PM EDT reply actions

gibbons
Gibbons can't run on that damned knee of his and he had to come out trying. I think it was stupid and myopic to put him in there in the first place, especially on turf. Why didn't they sub Fahey in there is the question; he's clearly the superior player

by leitch71 on Jun 13, 2006 8:10 PM EDT up reply actions

very nice Loewen
Yeah hes given up a few runs, but he kept his composure and has retired 10 in a row and is keeping us in the game. This is what I like to see from a young pitcher.
