Joe Kennedy dead at 28

Left-handed pitcher Joe Kennedy, most recently of the Toronto Blue Jays, passed away this morning at age 28, near Tampa. [AP report at Yahoo]

From the article:

"We were terribly shocked," Blue Jays president Paul Godfrey said. "From what we understand he was in Bradenton ... to be the best man at a wedding today."

...

Godfrey said he didn't have any particulars on the cause of death.

"Obviously, when a 28-year-old man dies, ball player or not, it's a terrible, terrible thing," he said.

The left-hander was 43-61 in seven major league seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays, Colorado Rockies, Oakland Athletics, Arizona Diamondbacks and Toronto Blue Jays. Kennedy compiled a 43-61 record with a 4.79 ERA, pitching 908 2/3 innings over 222 career appearances.

...

"We are deeply saddened and shocked to hear of Joe's passing. He was a valued teammate and friend to everyone with the A's organization," Oakland assistant general manager David Forst said in a statement. "On behalf of the entire A's organization, we extend our condolences to Joe's wife, Jami and his entire family."

I'm all for letting the man rest in peace, and though it's a very touchy subject, I'm sure everyone will get what I mean: I hope this was something natural, or a family history thing. I was a huge pro wrestling fan for most of my life, and if any of you were, you probably know what I fear. When 28-year old athletes die, there's always the chance that it's not good at all, and that steroids or something else played a large role.

Camden Chat sends our thoughts and best wishes to Joe Kennedy's family.

Ugh
Things like this bum me out. Best of his family, of course.

SC is an Idiot!
We don't know what you mean and your narcissism is evident by your comments. I knew Joe and your comments are a sign of ignorance! Why post comments like those in a time of grief?

re:
My narcissism? A young man has tragically passed away at age 28 in an industry haunted by steroid use. I very much hope this is not the case, and please believe me when I say that.

I post the comment in a time of grief because it's realistic. I'm sorry, and I feel for everyone that knew Joe personally, and I wish nothing but the best for his family and friends. Steroids are exceedingly dangerous drugs, and this is a business where we're more or less casting doubt on everyone out there, from Bonds to Ryan Franklin and everyone in between.

I truly, truly want this to be something else, as awful as the result -- no matter the cause -- is. And I sincerely send my condolences to Joe's family and friends.

Now, frankly, if that doesn't cover what I'm saying, I'm sorry. It's the best I can do. Thanks, and best wishes.

A TYPICAL, DISGUSTING DISPLAY!

Why SC?
I know you just defended yourself about linking Joe and steroids together, but was it really necessary  to link the two together?  This man just passed away and you figured since he was a baseball player, he probably was juicing.  I find this to be ignorant and uncalled for.  Can we at least wait to find out the real cause of death rather than make stupid assumptions about the supposed way the man died.  At least try to show some respect.

by TBA on Nov 25, 2007 8:31 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I wasn't going to comment
because SC can defend himself more concisely and certainly more eloquently than I can.  However, now that a few people with very young accounts have decided to be offended, I'll say a few things.

It's a dangerous, scary, and uncertain world out there.  Any one of us who leaves our house today could meet a tragic end.  It is the nature of this world and the lives we live: we are fragile, imperfect creatures who are both blessed and cursed with the cognitive ability to ponder our own mortality.

No one expects to die at 28 - of any cause.  Joe Kennedy was an athlete and we as fans assume that he took care of himself and was in good physical shape.  And yet, he died of an as yet unknown cause.  Sudden, shocking, and tragic, but it happened.  Everyone who is a fan of baseball mourns the loss of this guy no matter WHAT the cause of death.

Now, that being said: everyone knows that baseball has a big problem with drugs, and to say otherwise is just sticking your head in the sand.  In the current climate of steroid scandals and congressional investigations, drugs as a cause of death lurked in the back of my mind as soon as I read the news.  Ken Caminiti's shocking death a few years ago was hopefully an aberration and not the norm, but there has been a precedent set.

Of course, we as fans and spectators are far removed from any sort of autopsy process being performed on Joe Kennedy and we only know what the media tells us.  A quick google search turns up an article that says no one may know for sure for six or eight weeks.  ESPN.com reports that Kennedy may have had an enlarged heart.  However, nothing is certain.

Joe had a wife and a one-year-old child, and I am sure I am not alone in sending them my heartfelt sympathies.  Every article I have read has said that Joe was a really great guy, and I have no reason to doubt those claims.  Now, if the toxicology report comes back and says that he died of unnatural causes, will that change the fact that he was a great guy?  NO.

SC was just saying what many of us were thinking: in the current climate of scandal in baseball, I can't rule anything out.  No one is shitting on Joe Kennedy's grave.  There is a precedent.  Whatever Joe died of, his death is still the tragic death of an affable, ostensibly healthy young man.

To all of you who take umbrage at SC for being honest and open with the community about his initial reaction to news of Kennedy's death, I have this to say:

Fuck off.

this is ridiculous
Did I say anything more than "I fear this could be the case"? No. The tragic reality is that a steroids-related death of an active player is, unfortunately, the next, worst step in the steroids problem

What the hell?
So I just got back from T-Giving, I'm perusing CC and I find a whole lot of action on that silly Tejada Nonsense thread where I talked all that shit on newcomer grover.  I find a diatribe from said newcomer about me on there where he pontificates on winshares and non-slugging SS Orlando Cabrera and how valuable he is to the world.  Then when I go to click the reply I find that it's not there.  So I'd like to know, did SC or someone else lock the thread, or was I locked out of the thread?

And sorry to Joe Kennedy to put this in his thread.  Rest in peace, Joe.  This just happened to be on top of the page at the time.

for real?
and not a temporary glitch?

the back-and-forth is still going on on both those threads. if you were locked out i had nothing to do with it, and i doubt SC would do it. might be a weird cache thing or something....

for reals
and it's still that way, so no temp glitch...and on just those two threads, which both were kinda sassy, as far as threads go.

i thought those threads were pretty tame. i mean, compared to the LB3 days, for example.

So did I...
I'm hoping it's not some sort of censorship thing, but I kinda get the feeling it is.  And if it is, that's pretty lame.

re:
I rarely lock threads -- they automatically close for business after a certain period of time, to avoid spammers drilling the hell out of old threads that I'll never look at again.

Thanks for the time that you've given me...

Really?
I just emailed you about this.  Is the period of time one week? If so, this would all make sense, since it wasn't until Monday evening I checked that one thread again, which would put it just over one week since it had been posted.

I think so
I do know it is not at all possible to lock a single person out of a single thread. If it's not that the thread itself just closed, I have no idea what the issue was.

Thanks for the time that you've given me...

It's the thread
Not JP. I can't reply to it either.

The only thing I can figure about it is maybe it has a feature to disable replies if they come in at a certain frequency, since that's also an indicator of Spam. Sort of like when you're typing in AIM and you're telling your friend a story or something so you're typing really fast and hitting enter over and over and all the sudden it tells you you've been locked out for "scrolling" and you won't be able to send anything for a few minutes.

Ahhhhh...
...okay it all makes sense now.  Sorry for the false alarm, I didn't know the system functioned that way.  I'm a little bummed now though, since I can't do SEO by spamming old threads.
