Rumor Roundup for 2007-11-08

From the Yahoo! rumor mill: "Asked whether he has heard a lot of speculation about a potential Tejada trade, one American League GM said: 'No, not much at all.'"

Tom Glavine is being openly courted by his old team, the Atlanta Braves, and they would appear to be the front-runner in what may not amount to much of a sweepstakes. Frank Wren also says the team will fill their center field void via trade, not free agency. [Atlanta Journal-Constitution]

The Marlins want a starting pitcher and a center fielder for Miguel Cabrera. The Dodgers are making a very hard push, which would take another suitor out of the A-Rod running. [Palm Beach Post]

Buster Olney is saying that the Twins are exploring a deal for Scott Rolen. Negotiations are underway.

Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald reports that the Red Sox have made a "strong" three-year offer to Mike Lowell. I didn't expect Boston to offer three years to Lowell, but mounting pressure to bring him back might have something to do with it. [Boston Herald]

The Phillies have traded for former Astros closer Brad Lidge. The Phils also get Eric Bruntlett, and the Astros received Geoff Geary, Michael Bourn and Mike Costanzo. Phillies assistant GM Rubern Amaro, Jr., said, "We're getting one of the premier closers in the game." Uh. Well. He did have a nice bounce-back season.

Kenny Rogers wants to pitch next year, and the Tigers want him back. But Scott Boras seems to be urging Rogers to see what else is out there.

Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera are going to be offered nice deals by the Yankees. The Mets are also interested in Posada. Posada wants a four-year deal, and is entirely open to leaving the Yankees.

The Nationals have talked to Andruw Jones, and also plan to send out feelers to Torii Hunter and Aaron Rowand. They've also had preliminary talks with Livan Hernandez, fatass Bartolo Colon, and Jason Jennings. Hunter is expected to be heavily courted by the White Sox, Astros and Rangers. He wants a five-year deal.

In looking to replace A-Rod, the Yankees have had talks with the White Sox about Joe Crede, but they are fearful of his injury history. I'd be fearful about how easy it is for Joe Crede to be an offensive zero.

the funnies
"Posada wants a four-year deal, and is entirely open to leaving the Yankees."

Open to leaving my ass.  If I'm Yanks, I would offer the 3 year contract and then call his bluff.  He isn't going anywhere.

"The Nationals have talked to Andruw Jones, and also plan to send out feelers to Torii Hunter and Aaron Rowand."

That's ridiculous.  Jones or Hunter alone would take up half their payroll.

Why aren't we after Rowand?
Is he too close to 30? Otherwise, he's the kind of under-the-radar signing that could help. But only if' he's here in 2010.

he's just not that good
He's had two really good seasons and two that, well, weren't.

A TYPICAL, DISGUSTING DISPLAY!

besides...
Rowand IS 30, and he's not so under-the-radar.  he'll probably get almost as big a contract as Jones and Hunter.  he's asking for $14M per at this point.  not so under-the-radar if you ask me.

Trade
>The Marlins want a starting pitcher and a center fielder for Miguel Cabrera.

How about we trade them Daniel Cabrerra and Jay Payton? Pretty please?

Also
Kenny Rogers has "washed up veteran signing by the Orioles" written all over him.

Uh...
...if the Marlins were willing to make THAT trade I'd say "go for it." But I'd bet it'd take something more like Markakis and Bedard for Cabrera, who probably wouldn't sign here long term anyway.

At any rate, Jay Payton and Daniel Cabrera is the kind of trade that only happens in video games. While we're at it, why not ship Huff and Baez and Penn to Minnesota for Johan Santana! Let's sign A-Rod, too.

And hey, why stop there? Let's clone Babe Ruth and accelerate his growth to age 19, with intensive baseball instruction, then stick him in RF.

Hell, let's make TWO of him, stick ONE in RF and the other in the rotation!

Point is, all of these things are as likely as Payton+D. Cabrera for M. Cabrera.

No worries...
Fun to watch you go off though.

You think they'd make the trade if we threw in Melvin and Huff? And maybe an extra bucket of KFC?

It's GOTTA be Extra Crispy, though...
And two extra biscuits to make it worthwhile.
