Monday Flotsam and Jetsam

There's still some background chatter on various trades.

To wit:

  • as KenDixonFanClub has been detailing here, the Reds are interested in Bedard. In the Enquirer on Sunday, it was reported, "there are people in the organization confident that the deal will get done. One rated the chances at 75 percent. General manager Wayne Krivsky let trade talks rest Friday. He planned to make calls Saturday night and [Sunday]"
  • the Reds have competition from St. Louie. As mentioned by em3 in the thread below this one, STLtoday.com reports (via MLB FleeceFactor): "Club sources indicated by week's end that Rasmus could lose his "untouchable" label in a potential deal for Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Erik Bedard. Such a deal would have to include at least another prominent Cardinals prospect such as Bryan Anderson or Chris Perez. "
  • AOL sports reported Friday that Tejada-to-Houston talks have cooled
In other news:
  • the Yankees signed ex-Oriole LaTroy Hawkins to a one-year deal for $3.75M
  • From the Sun comes the news that the Mitchell Report has had no effect on potential FA trades. MacPhail and others are quoted as saying it was not really a topic of discussion at the GM Meetings. "One player's agent, who requested anonymity because he didn't want to create suspicion about his clients, said steroids and the Mitchell Report weren't mentioned when he talked contracts with executives from various clubs. He said he doesn't think teams really are concerned about the potential consequences the allegations might have on players. He pointed to outfielder Jose Guillen as a prime example."
That's all I got. Duck?

The mean side of me
really hopes Bedard goes to Cincinnati.  Think you're unhappy in Baltimore, Erik?  Wait till you get to the Queen City.

Although as bad as the NL Central is, even Cincinnati is a perennial contender.  Maybe it'll be good for him anyway.

and Ohio as a whole is a shithole.

Hey now
They have plenty of racism out there.  That's a selling point, right?  Wait, no.  No it's not!

And they tie up with throwers
instead of dropping their level and driving with a double leg takedown or hitting a duck under like we taught them!

And hip position! Don't get me started on hip position!

No to Cards
Rasmus looks nice, but neither of the other "top prospects" mentioned in the report look that stellar to me...and one is a catcher. Not so valuable when we have our own #1 draft pick in the pipeline.

Seconded
The Cards don't have what it takes.  The Reds do, so do the Angels, so do the Dodgers and the M's.  BoSox do too, but that's too painful a scenario to contemplate.

Take Cincy's guys
Homer Bailey, Josh Hamilton and Joey Votto would be a nice bounty for Bedard.  If that's been offered, MacPhail should take it. No?  (link below)

Homer Bailey
I just cannot get into these pitchers with bad control anymore.  We have been down this road for what seems like forever at this point as a ballclub; pitchers who cannot find the strike zone if their mother's lives depended on it.  If we're going to start doing something new as a franchise this needs to change.  I don't mean to pick on Homer, he's honestly not as bad as a lot of guys we callup, but his walk totals are still too high, and if we're trying to change things around, this is unacceptable going forward.  Been there, done that, over and over again.

Then again...
Often times rookies who are brought up are going to have control issues.  They're going to walk people. It's an issue of adapting to the big league environment.  It just takes a while.  A good sampling of ten or fifteen games might indicate if they're adjusting or not.

28 walks in 9 games is astronomical though, so maybe not.  Geez.

I am certain...
that I am not the only one who remembers Erik's lack of strike throwing ability when he first arrived on the scene.  Besides, Loewen is already a Bedard-clone in waiting.  In what sort of reality do we need more than one left-handed strong throwing Canadian?
Besides, it would be really nice to root for and be disappointed by a new set of guys...
Jay Bruce would be a great addition also.

I'm not sold on Bailey...
...either. I'm really not. Too many walks. We already have a guy who can throw really hard and not hit the strike zone. We have too many of them. No more.

Also, I don't want Hamilton. It's a great story. I hope he does well. I hope he does it somewhere OTHER than Baltimore, because he's too much of an injury risk. Too much baggage. I like Votto, I really like Bruce. But if we cannot get Bruce, let's get Adam Jones or Matt Kemp.
