MacPhail says Bedard Unlikely to be Traded

http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/baseball/bal-sp.osnotes22dec22,0,201461.story

Well, not sure how to feel about this. Feels kind of like the standard company line; I doubt MacPhail has actually stopped talking to the Mariners, or anybody else that wants to call. At the same time, Bedard is ours till 2009; we do not NEED to trade him now. I suspect his value is at its peak right now, but if we're forced to keep him for a bit, that ain't the worst thing.

Besides, there's no reason why a team like the Dodgers or Mariners might not get desperate at the deadline this year and give up more than they would now. What if the Dodgers are a few games out and Kuroda has flopped (possible) Schmidt is out again (likely) and either Lowe or Penny has caught a crippling STD (certainly possible). Then suddenly Kemp+Kershaw+2 more might not look so bad . Also, note in that same article, Mora being a whiny bitch. "I won't play no left field...If you get kicked out of your house, what are you going to do?" Get the f!@# out of my house, Mora.

Ehhhh
I have mixed feelings about this as well.  But as much as I really want that dream package of top young talent, all indications are that the current suitors just haven't stepped up to the plate with it.  I am completely in agreement with MacPhail that we need a Big XL Old Navy FLEECE of a deal (as fetishized on MLB Fleece Factor) in order to give up Bedard.  And like you say, his comments are all part of the game.  Teams need to know that they need to step up on this thing and grow the balls to give us a grown up size deal, not this piddly, off-brand shit they've been offering so far, acting like they're going to win the offseason Ace lottery at our fucking expense.  If not, we can take our chances at the trade deadline.  Will we live to regret it?  Maybe.  But I'd regret making a bad deal now more..and I think the chances of a lot of these teams kicking themselvs in the ass when they see Erik's numbers at the All Star Break are high.

lame
Bedard's trade value will never get higher especially if he injury plagued season in 08.  If he won't sign an extension, trade him.  Hopefully one of the mentioned trade partners will blink.

re:
I quite appreciate MacPhail's stance on this and I guess I'll trust his judgment. Let's hope Bedard is so good that he'll be super valuable at the deadline, and doesn't say his foot hurts in May so he can go fishing with his drug czar buddy Larry Bigbie, who will probably be kicked the fuck off of that Japanese team by then.

As for Melvin Mora, I just hate him at this point. Just hate him.

Thanks for the time that you've given me...

There is a God
He has answered my prayers about not trading Bedard.  Now we need to take all of that extra money we got from trading away some dead contracts and not low ball Bedard with an extension (like Mussina).

Bedard in his wildest dreams hasn't been half the pitcher at his age that Mussina was.

KDFC
You misquoted Mora.  The second part of the quote that you included (following the ellipsis)was concerning him not having been contacted about dropping his blanket no-trade clause.  He did not want to be traded, but if he was, he thought that he had no choice.

Here's the whole Sun entry on Mora....
Mora aims to stay at third
Orioles third baseman Melvin Mora is still planning to play a couple of different positions when he goes home to Venezuela for winter ball. But when he reports to spring training with the Orioles, he said, he will be at third base and nowhere else.

"I'm a third baseman. I won't play no left field [for the Orioles]. They traded [Miguel] Tejada for a left fielder," said Mora, referring to former Houston Astro Luke Scott. "Check my numbers. You can see where I play."

Mora also said he has not been contacted by the Orioles to drop his blanket no-trade clause.

"If you get kicked out of your house, what are you going to do?" Mora said. "You have to go. But I'm an Oriole, and I want to be an Oriole."

Lowe or Penny
Love the STD line. I can't wait to see that in the DL newswire.

It is very difficult
To imagine Bedard's stock going up any more next off-season.  He was one of the best pitchers in baseball this year, he has two more years on his contract, and he is not even 30.  I would really rather have a good prospect and two mediocre ones rather than demanding for three good prospects because most teams are not willing to decimate their farm system for just one guy.  If we do not get rid of Bedard in all likelihood we will be stuck with a guy who has a good season (3.50 ERA) but ages quickly and spends the majority of the next two seasons on the DL.

Only real downside...
Of holding out for a better deal is possibility of real injury problems.  Let's not deal him just to make a deal.  Of course, I'll admit to hating to see him go, but understand the logic.  Let's get the best deal we can.  We've already got rid of the one guy that really needed to be dealt as soon as possible.  Hopefully one or more of those guys will pan-out big-time.

My take is
We keep him: We get two years of a pretty good pitcher with 12-16 wins and 5-8 losses, pretty much our ace.  After his contract expires in 2009 he leaves for some big name team.

We deal him: Best case scenario is that we get three good prospects some cash.  Worst case scenario is that we get on good prospects (Number 1-3 guy in the organization) and a shitty one with some guy nearing 30 that hasn't yet made an ML debut.

I would still go with the second and hope that we get something in between and two prospects pan out.
