Around SBN: The Worst Team Ever Projected?

Son of a bitch

Lookit Erik B over there. That's about how I feel.

Honest to God, this morning after my "yay, spring training!" post, I seriously talked myself into believing in the Orioles this season. I was talking to my broseph, Tony Ling, and I says to Tony, I says, "We don't have any flat-out WEAK spots anymore. The bullpen is improved. If the rotation doesn't suck, we could win some games."

Then about an hour after that, having thought about it further, I went out into the living room to tell my roommate that the Orioles were making the playoffs this year. He thought I was just dicking around at first, but then he caught that crazed baseball fan look. He seemed almost taken aback. He attempted to reason with me. I wasn't having it.

Then I make some lunch, do some stuff, you know, chill for a little while. And goddamn it all, Kris Benson is out for the season.

IT'S FEBRUARY.

IT'S FEBRUARY.

What kind of sick news is this? I couldn't even get a DAY to be wrapped up in baseball fever? Not ONE DAY?

Baseball's Gods are laughing their asses off at our expense. Being a fan of the Orioles has become a big fat joke on us.

SON OF A BITCH.

Kris Benson isn't great, but he's a Major League pitcher. He's fine. He holds his own. I didn't like his trends, but there was enough reason to believe he could repeat his numbers from last year or maybe even bump them up a notch. You know, if you ignore statistics and shit like that. But most importantly, for better or worse, we knew what we were getting out of him. He is a known commodity.

Now, the options to replace him. With Rodrigo Lopez gone (and I still don't see that as a bad move, because to hell with Rodrigo Lopez), there's Hayden Penn in-house, and free agents Steve Trachsel, Ron Villone and Mark Redman.

Let's start with Hayden Penn. My answer is no. He is not good enough to start in the major leagues. They'll want to sign one of these guys anyway for depth now, because Penn will get shelled. He is not good enough yet.

Villone is 37 years old, sucks, and hasn't started a game in two years. The most innings he has ever pitched in a season is 142 2/3, eight years ago. No to Ron Villone.

Redman was, like, the shittiest All-Star ever in '06, but someone had to rep the Royals, and it's not like Ozzie Guillen cared who it was. Redman has had a couple of fair seasons, but they kind of came a few years ago. He's not that old, and he's sure to be cheap, but a third lefty in the rotation? I don't care for this at all.

STEVE TRACHSEL. STEVE TRACHSEL. STEVE TRACHSEL.

He's reliable, he's proven, he's younger than Villone. His BB/K sucked awful last year, and it's never been great, but chances are it won't be any worse this year than Benson's would have been, because Benson's was no prize and I doubt Trachsel will be 1:1ing it again.

So, yeah, I want Trachsel. I've always liked him for no good reason. I could live with Redman. Ron Villone would make the least possible sense, so expect Ron Villone.

They cannot just not sign somebody and give Penn this spot, though. That can't happen. If Penn looks great in the spring, fine, give him the ball. But they have to have a safety net there, at the very least. I feel this is 100 percent necessary. Hayden Penn is not ready to start every five days in Major League Baseball. He just isn't.

Boy, this sucks.

But Steve Trachsel is taking us to the playoffs, baby. I will not be deterred. ("I will not be the turd.")

And you know what else, and I feel this might get ignored in all the hubbub? This sucks for Kris Benson. Here's a guy who was a No. 1 draft pick, had incredible promise, and now he's got a partially torn rotator cuff to go along with a Tommy John surgery that already derailed his career years ago. Who knows what his career could have been without arm trouble? He's not the first and won't be the last, but Benson seems like an honest, hard-working kind of guy, and I feel bad for him. This could seriously, seriously hamper his future in baseball.

Heck...
Sign both Redman and Tracshel; it's not like we aren't going to need a sixth and possibly seventh pitcher.

If they would sign a cheap 1 year deal and assuming one would accept a minor league deal or would agree to pitch out of the bullpen; then go for it.  Worst case is one or the other sucks and you wasted 2 million.  It's not like there is much of a chance of Bedard and Wright staying healthy for a full season.

I kind of would like to give Penn a full ML season to see if he is actually worth keeping and that season might as well be 2007, it's not like we are going to be winning the division this year.  He's done well in the minors, so hopefully it's just a mental issue he is having pitching in the ML and can work his way through it.

Redman and Tracshel
"Sign both Redman and Tracshel; it's not like we aren't going to need a sixth and possibly seventh pitcher."

That wouldn't bother me at all.  Easy E and Wright will miss some starts this year due to injuries.  The O's should make some back up options that extend beyond Penn.

The Gods of baseball suck.
It means jack-shit now, but Kris Benson could have been the linchpin that held Orioles pitching staff together and the guy who would stop 3-4 losing streaks in 2007. Two factors kept Benson from being a 19-20 game winner last year. First, the Oriole hitters friggin' diappeared when Benson started. Second, when Benson had his real shitty games, he was pitching on three days rest. Volunteering to shore up a starting pitching staff shot to hell by incompetence and injuries.
I hope this rotor cuff injury didn't occur while Benson skiing or some such shit.
I thought it happier to be dead / to die for a World Series victory, than live for mediocerity.

Three days rest?
Although I could have missed one, I only see him pitching 2 games on three days rest, one time it was right after he only last two innings and the second one he didn't pitch all that bad (he actually pitched better than his ERA for the year).

I don't think 3 days rest is much of an excuse for how poorly he pitched last year.  Guys with ERA's over 4.8 do not win 20 games, at least not anymore.

re:
Somebody should just try a four-man rotation again. Make everybody pitch on three days rest. Hell, the Orioles should do it. Just go Bedard-Cabs-Loewen-Wright and carry an extra dude in the bullpen (Todd!) and see what happens. Fifth starters usually stink, our other four guys throw a ton of pitches (well, Cabs, Loewen, and Wright do) but get taken out early enough that they can handle it.

I know the Orioles aren't adventurous enough to actually try this, but I wish they would.

The other thing to think about is that most teams don't introduce the fifth starter until May anyway, what with all the days off. Maybe Penn will show he's ready in the minors by then or something.

I dunno. This sucks.

RE: Weaver
I don't see it happening; but this was one of Weavers rules on managing (he had a term for his rules, but I foget what it was).  His rule stated something like:  A four man rotation is always better than a five man rotation; it's much easier to find 4 guys who can pitch than 5.

Like I said though, it ain't gonna happen.

Seventh Law
It's easier to find four good starters than five

Here are all ten

Problem with the O's is the eight law: The best place for a rookie pitcher is in long relief

Penn should ultimately come in as long relief, not a starter. I've also read about giving Olson a try, but he's much greener than Penn. Heck, according to law 8, Loewen should be in long relief.

Here's a four man rotation article: The Four Man Rotation Redux. The O's have a ton of relievers. They should be able to limit pitch count for a four man rotation and still work Penn into the bullpen.

In all likelihood we'll see Trachsel in an O's uniform. Maybe he'd be good insurance, but the four man rotation idea is intriguing.

Let's assume the season is a wreck by June. What the hell, maybe it's a blessing. The O's should take the opportunity to give a few more guys a whirl and decide who to trade to a pitching desperate team in July. Let me see some more y-o-u-t-h. History says this won't happen, but I have to hang onto something here.

The only thing keeping Benson from winning 20...
is being good enough to win 20.  I mean, he's a fine pitcher and, like SC says, he's a warm body with major league experience, but come on.  This sounds like Roy Williams from the Lions saying "we were so close to scoring 40 it's silly," as his team goes 2-14.

Benson has a 4.82 ERA, and only a 4.49 EqERA.  He struck out merely 88 in 183 IP while walking almost 60.  He gave up 33 home runs and Baseball Prospectus rated his stuff at -11.

I don't think it's that much of a stretch to think this isn't a setback at all for the Orioles.  Would it kill them to light a fire under everyone, bring in a bunch of extra arms and hold open competitions for anyone in the rotation not named Erik Bedard and Adam Loewen.

Wins
"The only thing keeping Benson from winning 20 is being good enough to win 20."

Who cares about wins?  We all know it's a largely a function of run support.  Benson, or almost anybody for that matter, could easily be a 20 game winner with the right run support.

yeah
Steve Trachsel won 15 games last behind the NLs best offense despite the fact that he had an 87 ERA+ and a WHIP of 1.597.

He stank, but the Mets were good so he won 15.

he had injury problems last year.

Benson
Do you really think there's anyone out there as good as Benson is right now available...

sigh - I see no harm in signing either Trachsel or Redman for one year...
