Gameday Thread: Tigers at O's, 904/10

Game Time: 7:05 | TV: MASN, FSN (DET) | Radio: WHFS
Nate Robertson, LH Jaret Wright, RH (1-0, 3.18) (0-1, 15.43) CF C Granderson 2B B Roberts 2B P Polanco 3B M Mora DH G Sheffield RF N Markakis RF M Ordonez SS M Tejada SS C Guillen DH A Huff C I Rodriguez LF J Gibbons 1B S Casey 1B K Millar LF C Monroe CF C Patterson 3B N Perez C A Castillo

Here's the good news: Jaret Wright's WHIP (3.86) is slightly below the league average ERA (3.93). Huh? Huh?

We can look forward to Jaret Wright in June, July and September, if he's healthy. That's when he's mediocre instead of terrible!

OK, enough busting of Wright's chops. He's actually very good against Detroit for his career, with a 3.39 ERA in 66 1/3 IP. I always like using numbers like that, as if they matter. The Tigers Jaret Wright pitched most of those 66 innings against were not any good. To be fair, the one start he had against Detroit last year, he went 6 1/3 and allowed two earned, with five Ks and a walk. So who knows? Maybe their uniforms anger him.

Robertson is a thoroughly solid No. 3 starter. He has five starts against the O's in his career, with a 3.86 ERA.

I'm having some trouble finding it today. Make me feel foolish Jaret.

At least Wright is better than Ponson
Wright has a pretty easy job right now.  Everyone knows he's terrible, so if he is anything better than terrible, he's done a good job.  Hell, if he goes five innings of four-run ball, I'll be f'in ecstatic.

Also.  I enjoyed watching Sir Sidney get destroyed last night.  One of the ESPN guys commented in the second inning that Ponson was sweating and looked exhausted.  In the second inning.  In an indoor, climate-controlled dome.  In the second inning.

Thank god we excised that lump of fat last year.

by PhilR8 on Apr 10, 2007 3:03 PM EDT   0 recs

Dang
Yeah, well, I didn't at all enjoy watching Ponson suck last night.  I'd have rather watched him pull some miraculous performance out of his fat *ss and put the Yanks in the L column for a day.  Man, how hard up are the Twins, anyway?  Ha.  I guess just slightly less hard-up than signing Wright.  Which would you sign if you had to sign one of the two for your 5 slot?

I'm more nervous than cautiously optimistic tonight.  But whatever, take a loss or two to get Wright bumped to the bullpen or Ottawa, and get Olsen or Penn up in his place, or more realistically, Guthrie...then, who knows how far the O's can go...

Why would we send
Wright to the Phillies' AAA affiliate? Ours is in Norfolk now.

early season
you know one thing i love about the early part of the season. The gigantic eras that pitchers have.
Then as the season wears on thay slowly drop... unless of course your Rodrigo Lopez.

HA HA
...that Lopez comment made me laugh.

P.S.
Man, I was looking at old stats...specifically, the 79 O's...and man, its true what the old guys around the office say...starters back then, not just having a complete game in a season, but having 10 or 15 or more sometimes...and now, look, we have 7 guys in the bullpen (I mean, everyone does, not just us...I'm not saying its an O's problem)...and like, the whole of the O's staff had ERAs under 4...man...what happened to great pitching like that?  I mean, I guess steroids and/or weight-lifting on the part of batters is what happened...but man, that must have been neat to watch, you know?

by the doppleganger on Apr 10, 2007 3:17 PM EDT   0 recs

i wonder...
how much additionally is added on by by games speeding up?

let's not forget, though, that pitchers are also taking roids (and other peds)!

We have an 8-man 'pen right now, don't we?

by pipkin on Apr 10, 2007 3:35 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

8?
Is it?  I just thought it was 13, and I subtracted 5 starters and didn't count Ray because I wasn't counting the closer in the "look how meager today's starting pitching is" conversation.

by the doppleganger on Apr 10, 2007 3:36 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

you wonder...
Yeah, thats true...but you know, you'd think they would be even BETTER, taking peds (is that performance-enhancing-drugs?) than they were back then...

nope.
his diddy told him he was a switch hitter when he was 4 and damnit, he's a switch hitter whether he's good at it or not. not helping the "seriously, stop trying. give it up" cause is the fact that his walkoff against the yankees in '05 was from the right side.
