Gameday Thread: Tigers at O's, 904/10

Game Time: 7:05 | TV: MASN, FSN (DET) | Radio: WHFS
Nate Robertson, LH Jaret Wright, RH (1-0, 3.18) (0-1, 15.43) CF C Granderson 2B B Roberts 2B P Polanco 3B M Mora DH G Sheffield RF N Markakis RF M Ordonez SS M Tejada SS C Guillen DH A Huff C I Rodriguez LF J Gibbons 1B S Casey 1B K Millar LF C Monroe CF C Patterson 3B N Perez C A Castillo

Here's the good news: Jaret Wright's WHIP (3.86) is slightly below the league average ERA (3.93). Huh? Huh?

We can look forward to Jaret Wright in June, July and September, if he's healthy. That's when he's mediocre instead of terrible!

OK, enough busting of Wright's chops. He's actually very good against Detroit for his career, with a 3.39 ERA in 66 1/3 IP. I always like using numbers like that, as if they matter. The Tigers Jaret Wright pitched most of those 66 innings against were not any good. To be fair, the one start he had against Detroit last year, he went 6 1/3 and allowed two earned, with five Ks and a walk. So who knows? Maybe their uniforms anger him.

Robertson is a thoroughly solid No. 3 starter. He has five starts against the O's in his career, with a 3.86 ERA.

At least Wright is better than Ponson
Wright has a pretty easy job right now.  Everyone knows he's terrible, so if he is anything better than terrible, he's done a good job.  Hell, if he goes five innings of four-run ball, I'll be f'in ecstatic.

Also.  I enjoyed watching Sir Sidney get destroyed last night.  One of the ESPN guys commented in the second inning that Ponson was sweating and looked exhausted.  In the second inning.  In an indoor, climate-controlled dome.  In the second inning.

Thank god we excised that lump of fat last year.

by PhilR8 on Apr 10, 2007 3:03 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Dang
Yeah, well, I didn't at all enjoy watching Ponson suck last night.  I'd have rather watched him pull some miraculous performance out of his fat *ss and put the Yanks in the L column for a day.  Man, how hard up are the Twins, anyway?  Ha.  I guess just slightly less hard-up than signing Wright.  Which would you sign if you had to sign one of the two for your 5 slot?

I'm more nervous than cautiously optimistic tonight.  But whatever, take a loss or two to get Wright bumped to the bullpen or Ottawa, and get Olsen or Penn up in his place, or more realistically, Guthrie...then, who knows how far the O's can go...

Why would we send

early season
you know one thing i love about the early part of the season. The gigantic eras that pitchers have.
Then as the season wears on thay slowly drop... unless of course your Rodrigo Lopez.

P.S.
Man, I was looking at old stats...specifically, the 79 O's...and man, its true what the old guys around the office say...starters back then, not just having a complete game in a season, but having 10 or 15 or more sometimes...and now, look, we have 7 guys in the bullpen (I mean, everyone does, not just us...I'm not saying its an O's problem)...and like, the whole of the O's staff had ERAs under 4...man...what happened to great pitching like that?  I mean, I guess steroids and/or weight-lifting on the part of batters is what happened...but man, that must have been neat to watch, you know?

i wonder...
how much additionally is added on by by games speeding up?

let's not forget, though, that pitchers are also taking roids (and other peds)!

Is it?  I just thought it was 13, and I subtracted 5 starters and didn't count Ray because I wasn't counting the closer in the "look how meager today's starting pitching is" conversation.

Yeah, thats true...but you know, you'd think they would be even BETTER, taking peds (is that performance-enhancing-drugs?) than they were back then...

unless you're a hot chick, markakis isn't a particularly gregarious or friendly guy. seeing as yours is literally the first time i've ever heard a negative story about a fan's interaction with roberts, i think you probably just caught him on a bad day or rubbed him the wrong way or something.

you don't start 4 lefties against a guy who has held lefties to a .565 OPS combined in his last three years.  Get a right handed bat who can hit lefties on the bench.  You wonder why this offense is so putrid tonight?  4 lefties, 3 of which who don't hit lefties well going against a guy who dominates them.  Pretty easy to figure out.

by dayzd toe on Apr 11, 2007 9:25 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Just...wow
I'm not trying to get into an argument or anything, but are you kidding me? It's not about over-sensitivity. It's about the fact that society has ingrained in everyone that being gay is the equivelant of being a weak pansy, much like it has done to women. It's about the world believing that if you're gay, you're less of a man, less of a person. And it shouldn't be allowed to be said without people sitting up and taking notice.

Look, my brother also happens to be gay. So does my best friend since elementary school. And often times they'll say or do something and I'll say, "God, you are so GAY!" or "That is gay, but not in the good way." But I have a personal relationship with those people and it's joking around and it's understood how I feel. Calling someone a fag because they strike out is NOT the same.

by Stacey on Apr 11, 2007 9:35 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Pansy? or less of a man?
not so much.  I think, as a whole, society, though maybe not accepting of the lifestyle, has gotten over that stigma that a gay man is less of a man.  And maybe since my brother knows me and understands how I feel he doesn't get offended.  I don't really see the difference betweeen 'And often times they'll say or do something and I'll say, "God, you are so GAY!"' and calling someone a fag for striking out.  It sounds pretty much like symantics to me.  Maybe the word "fag" has a more negative conotation but essentially the meaning between the two phrases is the same.  However, I don't really think this is going anywhere so we'll have to agree to disagree.  If more people could do that I think most of the issues that divide would diminish.

by dayzd toe on Apr 11, 2007 10:02 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well
People in general may have gotten over the stigma of gay men being less of a man than straight men, but the word usage and attitude is still in our society to a disturbing degree. When you call someone a fag or a cocksucker when they do something stupid or incompetant, you are implying that becuase of the things that they do, they are less than you.

I'm personally not all that thrilled about a screen name "yankeessuckmywanker" or whatever because it again implies that because the Yankees are inferior, they should be the ones administering the blow jobs. Because women and gay men are the ones who give blow jobs. I don't blame this kid who chose that moniker, because he's just a kid and he's been brought up to think that way, and probably doesn't think twice about calling people fags or telling them to suck his wanker.

by Stacey on Apr 11, 2007 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Eat Me...
Not that I'm saying that, but that phrase works the same way.  It just so happens that women and gay men ARE the ones who administer blow jobs.  The general nature of a BJ is, I guess, demeaning.  The phrase "eat me" works in much the same way...  But that doesn't so much offend a straight man when its used toward them.  They just blow it off.  They don't take it to mean "I'm better than you, so I won't do what you're asking" ad get all offended.  It's just taken as "I won't do it."  In you, does the phrase "Eat Me" strike the same chord as the term "cocksucker?"

by dayzd toe on Apr 11, 2007 12:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The general nature of a BJ is, I guess, demeaning
Why? Why is it demeaning? And if it's demeaning, why would you want a woman (or man) you love doing it to you? I mean, I'm not trying to get graphic or anything, I'm really curious. I'm desperate to understand. Is it demeaning because it's something only women and gay men would do? If not, why then?

Actually, you know, it's probably better that we just stop this conversation. It has nothing to do with baseball, clearly we're at an ideological impasse, and neither of us will change our minds.

by Stacey on Apr 11, 2007 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

very true
but let me explain my comment...  I'm trying to do this without being too graphic.  It is not demeaning because only women and gay men do it.  The position of both parties sort of makes it at least appear demeaning.  One party down in front of the other while the other looks down at the first party.  It just seems demeaning in nature by physical positioning.  Just like the other, "Eat Me," comment is demeaning.  I think the reason people ask their loved ones to perform the act might be 1) because they're lazy and it's an "easy" way, for lack of a better word, to get their rocks off, and/or 2) perhaps subconsciously there's still a part of the human psyche that makes a male want to "put his partner in their place," again for lack of a better phrase.

by dayzd toe on Apr 11, 2007 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

just wandering
what if both parties are into it. I mean what if it something the.....giver enjoys doing.By taking your approach it seems like you would be looking down (no pun intended) on them just for something thay may enjoy.

by BENNYBIRDMAN on Apr 11, 2007 3:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not actually
saying it IS demeaning, I'm just saying that by physical positioning it comes across as a demeaning act.  If the giver is into it... by all means... ENJOY!!!  I sure don't stop my wife from doing when she wants to.

ok
Are black people "oversensitive" to be offended when  non-blacks call them the N word? The word you used is a hateful and derisive term, used by bigots for generations. Just like the N word. If your brother knows you're kidding and he's OK with it, fine. But most people aren't.
Everyone fits in a skillet.

by 2632 on Apr 11, 2007 9:57 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

to that
I say people can't have it both ways...  gay people can't call others fags, and black people can't call others N's and then tell everyone else it's off limits.  The words are not nice, but people say things that aren't nice all the time.  That's just a reflection of the person using the word.  If they want to be mean, they have every right as long as they are not infringing on someone else's property, rights, or person.  In short, if a jackass wants to be a jackass... oh well.  In a Jay-Z reference, it's just dirt on my shoulder.

by dayzd toe on Apr 11, 2007 10:09 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It doesn't matter what you think.
That's infuriating, isn't it?  Someone saying that to you.  Or at least that's what I thought when someone gave me that advice above way back when.  But, he wasn't trying to be a dick then, and neither am I now.

The point of the advice, though, is that when anyone chooses their words they need to think about the affect those words are going to have on those around them...and not get stuck on their own personal feeling about their rights or the truth or what have you.  This is communication we're talking about, it's 2+ sided, and communication needs to agree with its context or it will make for some messy situations.  I might clown around with a gay friend and call him a "faggoty" because I know he can be casual with me like that.  But if that same friend is around a stranger who says the exact same word, the context is going to be unclear.  That gay friend might feel threatened by that person, and given past history he has plenty of reason to be in the absence of any reason to trust him.

Now I am a big offender of plenty of people with plenty of things I've said and written in my life.  This is not coming from an angel...far from it.  I just feel when you're dealing with very sensitive terms like the one used above, you need to either confine those to social contexts where you know how they'll be taken by people, or not say them at all.

by Jonnypops on Apr 11, 2007 10:30 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, but
now your incorporating other things into the conversation.  The word "Fag" itself is not threatening.  The case in point calling whomever a fag because he struck out isn't a threat.  Now if that word comes out with some sort of physical inclination of intent or even the tone can be threatening... but the word by itself is not a threat.  And seriously, it's not that infuriating to me.  I have my thoughts and someone else has their thoughts.  That may not agree with me and they may not care what I have to say.  If that's the case, so be it. Again, if someone wants to be a dick, that's just a reflection on their character.

by dayzd toe on Apr 11, 2007 10:36 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

C'mon now
The word fag pisses people off.  Look around on this thread and it's plain to see.  Does it piss me off personally?  Not necessarily.  But that's not the point.  The point is if you're going to throw around obvious epithets, you are going to needlessly piss people off and detract from whatever the real point of what you're trying to do was.  Unless of course the goal was simply to piss people off.  Regardless,  it just seems like a big old waste of time.  Enough said.

But with their recent yelling match I figured most people sided one way or the other.  And thanks.  I don't think I'm a bigot, and I try not to be an asshole...  I don't talk like that either just because I DO know how people take it and like I've said that's not my character.  I just don't think they should take it like that.  I guess that's where we differ, though.  There's not too much anyone can say to or about me that gets my blood boiling...  now bring up my 18 month old daughter in those terms and I'll beat your ass, but I think most parents would.
