Bless You Boys, SBN's Tigers blog -- it's grrreat!

This is the latest that a season at Camden Yards has opened in 12 years. Cal throws out today's opening pitch.

The Tigers won 3-2 yesterday on Pudge Rodriguez's ninth-inning, three-run home run in Kansas City off of David Riske, and they're 3-2 in the first five games of defending their American League crown. They're still a really good team, though having Chad Durbin in the place of Kenny Rogers to start the season is a little bit of a blow. Durbin hasn't made a start since 2004, and is one of those countless Royals flameouts from the late 1990s/early 2000s. Drafted in the third round out of high school in 1996, Durbin only had about a season and a half of real starting time for Kansas City, giving them 16 brutal games in 2000 and 29 pretty poor games in 2001. He has since pitched in Cleveland and Arizona, and was out of the majors in 2005. He made three relief appearances for Detroit last year.

Cabrera was pretty decent in his first start this year, going seven against the Twins and allowing three earned in a 3-2 loss. He struck out nine, but he still walked four. It's a mild improvement, but you still can't walk four guys a game and get away with it all that often. We'll probably see Alberto Castillo today, too, which means no Paul "Superman" Bako.

seriously, though?
what in the hell do they do to young pitching prospects in kc?  it makes b'more's bad run look like child's play!

...though, i'll bet greinke is comeback player of the year this year at the ripe old age of 24.

by jq higgins on Apr 9, 2007 9:16 AM EDT   0 recs

you know what's sad?
The home opener isn't even sold out for the AL champion Tigers. The home opener isn't sold out at all. They're still sending out emails basically begging people to come to the park.

Nah...
if they were really begging, they'd say upper reserve $0, as opposed to upper reserve only $8.

It wasn't totally full last year either
It was just the Devil Rays, but still! It was Opening Day! I think one of their problems is they hold back OD tickets (I guess because people with game plans get first cracks), then try to sell MORE tickets for the whole year by only allowing you to buy OD tickets if you get the six pack or whatever. They should just let you by OD tickets the way you buy other tickets and I think it'd sell out pretty quick. But people don't want to go through all the hassle.

That being said, I just went to the Orioles website and they aren't offering Opening Day as one of the choices for the six pack anymore, and if you try to buy two tickets you can only get Standing Room. You can get a pretty sweet seat if you're going alone though.

by Stacey on Apr 9, 2007 10:36 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

It is sad...
...but it's not too surprising due to:
  1.  The state of the franchise.
  2.  It's a Monday afternoon game.
  3.  It's cold out and a lot of people don't like early season games.  For example, even Yankee stadium wasn't filled up at either of the games this weekend.
  4.  The Tigers are not much of a draw in the Baltimore area, penant or not.
  5.  The season has already started, so even though it's the home opener, a lot of the excitement is taken away since we're already 6 games into the season.

I don't know......
about any one else but for me to be able to take off from work, buy a ticket (in a decent seat otherwise why go?), buy two beers and a Boogs and still pay my mortgage it would take some major sacrfice.

My wife and i love to go to games but damn it is next to impossible with the prices.

Yeah, and it's way too cold for baseball. I could totally have gone, but what's the point. I'll wait until May and June when its warmer.

Jose Mesa returns!
The ageless wonder returns to Baltimore. And they still won't fill Camden Yards for him?
How soon they forget...

He's still around?
Is he trying to be the first active pitcher who can collect Social Security with his salary? How old is this guy? 45?

better than mine - entering grades for school while I watch on a 13" TV in my room as my kids try and kill each other in the living room. The wonders of 10 and (almost) 7 year olds...

or does the audio from the studio sound like it's being mixed by someone's 15 year old cousin? It's sounds public access show bad. I didn't think it was possible to make Tom Davis sound worse, but apparently, it is.

I've got the Tigers TV broadcast
Let me tell you something -- these guys are a lot more cocky than they were early last season. Go figure. "I don't know if you can have a big win in April..." Last year they were shitting their pants over every single one.

Let's see them LOSE the DVISION by a game again. Or, miss the playoffs by a game. Then they can wonder about those April wins and losses.

No personal catcher for D-Cabs
Because, according to Gary:
  1. They want Bako's bat in the lineup. Ponder THAT sentence for a moment.
  2. Don't want to get set in matchups with P & C with people coming off the DL.
Also - D-Cabs has got some scary stuff today. That 3rd pitch to Gary Sheff was NASTY. He's getting squeezed on the strike zone, though.

Unlike D-Cabs last start, I guess..
'cause D-Cabs shoulda fielded that one, and then he's got a shot at a W instead of a L.

I suppose Corey can be excused, but doesn't that seem like the kind of ball taht other teams catch against the O's?
