Finally, it's time to cut bait

| Miguel Tejada wanted out prior to the 2006 season. Let's fulfill his wish before it's too late to get anything worthwhile in exchange. (AP) |
Remember when Miguel Tejada wanted to get out of Baltimore? Let's come back to that.
Tonight's loss was just another in a long line of pathetic Oriole defeats this season, as much if not more the team's own doing as it was their opponent being a better team. Steve Trachsel was competitive again. The lineup was mostly inept again. And, again, Chris Ray blew it when crunch time came.
Ray's 2006 was successful, though many (including Baseball Prospectus) noted the undeniable luck that factored into his numbers. Many of us, like myself, hoped and even assumed that Ray's natural talent would make up for the expected loss of good fortune in 2007. It hasn't turned out that way. Ray has been shelled on several occasions, and now sports a 4.70 ERA. He has five losses to his credit (and three wins, which is nothing to get excited about in your closer) and we're not even at the All-Star break.
Like Ray, setup man Danys Baez has been a headache. Jamie Walker and Chad Bradford -- the other major additions to the exciting revamped bullpen -- have been solid, but are often used poorly. John Parrish and Todd Williams are invitations to the other team to score runs.
While Erik Bedard has been good and Jeremy Guthrie a revelation in the rotation, the rest of the team outside of Brian Roberts has flat-out stunk, and that includes the team's lone star player, Miguel Tejada.
The former MVP shortstop has hit cleanup most of the season, and he's gotten his singles in. He's hitting .300 (though he's been slumping) and that's just super. But his power is gone. With seven homers and a slugging percentage below .430, Tejada hasn't come close to earning his money this season. At 31 years of age, it's unlikely we're going to see a return of the 30-homer Miguel Tejada.
So why not go ahead and put him out there? There are teams out there that would gladly take a shortstop with a .300 average and a track record like Miggi's.
It's time to trade Miguel Tejada. There is no reason for this team to hang on to him.
The pipe dreams that Mark Teixeira will come and save the Orioles, and that all the young guys will pan out (please, huh?), and that the Orioles will amazingly change their decade-long streak of utter incompetence don't excite me. This is a franchise that is rotten from the top down, and until this team actually goes out and wins 90 games, I won't believe they can do it even if they signed every one of the game's best players at every position on the field.
What good does having a declining Tejada do for the Orioles? They're in last place. This is not a team that can be salvaged. The owner is an infamous idiot. The manager has so quickly become the scourge of the fanbase that I think some of us wish Lee Mazzilli was still in charge. Leo Mazzone has managed to succeed with exactly one of his several projects in his first two seasons, and the rest have been a mess.
Melvin Mora and Jay Gibbons are albatrosses. Nick Markakis' second season has not been a success, though I am not really worried about Markakis. The clock struck twelve on Corey Patterson, and he's completely useless. Aubrey Huff, predictably, really sucks.
This is a horrible team, worse even than the record they sport that sees them seven games under .500 and in last place, which has simply been a long time coming. More or less, the Orioles in last place has just been a waiting game -- whenver Tampa Bay got their ducks in a row, this was bound to happen without some serious change. And serious change doesn't mean a handful of relievers that got overpaid, a washed-up Huff, and Jay Payton's singles. It also can't simply hinge on Mark Teixeira, as we've seen how Tejada has done in a similar situation.
Going back to Tejada being traded, the time is right simply because it might be the last time we can get a package back that will really benefit the team. Wait any longer, and you might not be able to sell Tejada as an All-Star shortstop. He's not the same hitter he was a couple of years ago. His power started dropping in the second half of 2005, and it has yet to recover.
I don't want to get into possible returns on Tejada, because that's not the point. I'm not here to play GM. I just know that this team is pointless, the same as the rest, and that the Orioles may as well accept it and not continue the same old song and dance where we pretend it's just a thing or two what needs fixin' before the team catches fire. Tejada is no help to this club. Let's let Miggi go free, and get back what we can. I don't really have anything against the guy, and if he goes, I'll be thankful for what he tried to do. It's obvious that he doesn't want to be here, and it's also very clear that it wouldn't really matter whether he was or wasn't. This team doesn't need his help to lose games.

Another thing
Also, regarding Chris Ray, is Hoey still our closer of the future? If so, I say call him up now. He can't be worse than Ray, and a trial by fire is the best way to decide if he's the real deal. I wouldn't give the job to anyone in our current bullpen, except maybe Walker if the 9th happened to be predominantly lefties.

Don't hold your breath
That will not happen at the Warehouse. When things go sour the first reaction is to bury their collective heads in the sand. Say nothing, but then have marketing send out more stupid mailings to the few fans who might still come to a game. In the meanwhile, keep shoveling out the same old shit. Throw the manager in front of the cameras to say "we're better than this" while the rest of the front office hides.
It's been ten years of this crap. Ten years of denial. Ten years of ineptness. You'd figure at some point Angelos would get tired of giving so much money to multi-million dollar welfare recipients. You'd expect that sheer embarassment would induce some change. It's been ten years of basically no reaction. Who expects this crew to look in the mirror, decide that enough is enough, and initiate some serious change?
Angelos' sorry ass can't disappear fast enough.

Could not agree with you more...
He does not want to be here, and the O's should just see what can get for him...
Let him go free and give him a chance to go with a contender, and hopefully we can get good talent in return.

This is rock bottom.
Now as far trading Miggy is concerned, it is impossible to endorse this without knowing what we're getting in return. The other day I read another rumor in a So Cal paper that had us trading him to the Angels for Aybar and Ervin Santana again, to which I would say hell no. If we get a good offer, sure we should trade him, but it's only something that can be taken on an offer by offer basis. If we can find trades for Gibbons, Mora or Huff I would dump all three in a second...but it's not gonna happen. Nobody out there is that stupid.

Oh where to begin...
Now, to the Birds. I have been following the baseball organization we used to call a team since I attended my first O's game in 1966, a World Series win over the Dodgers at the ripe age of 8.
I watched Hall of Famers Brooks, Frank, Palmer, Weaver, great players like Mc Nally, Cuellar, Boog, Belanger, Davey Johnson, Paul Blair, and then later Singleton, Murray, and Cal.
I watched the last game on 33rd Street, and saw the first game at the Yards.
I was at the All Star game at the Yards, and still have my All Star ball, autographed by Eddie Murray, on my mantle.
I have suffered thru Bob Milacki, Leo Gomez, 21 straight losses, and the collapse of 2005.
This year, after 41 seasons of O's fandom, is by far the most disappointing and disgusting piece of baseball shit of a team I have witnessed. I remember when I was a kid, and my grandfather from Chester, PA was a HUGE Phillies fan. He never lived to see them sign Pete Rose and win it all in 1980....but when he was alive my brother and I used to torment the shit out of him because our beloved O's for a long time were neck and neck with the Oakland Raiders for the winningest professional sports team for years. I never understood how a man that I thought was so intelligent could waste his time and effort on a piece of shit organization like the Phillies in the sixties and early seveties...but now I understand.
You become addicted and love what you think you should have, and every day you hope over and over again that somehow today will be different...kind of like an abusive relationship....but it never changes. My grandfather longed for the days of the Whiz Kids from 1950, and prayed that somehow Cookie Rojas and Dick Allen and Johnny Callison would revive that once found glory that the Whiz Kids brought to the team. We long for that too....but it ain't gonna happen. This team is stuck in Suck-ville, and it ain't comin' home for a longtime.
The players are mailing it in, and have no desire to play or be like a team of any kind.
Free agents come here to steal the fans money, eat well, and play in a nice stadium. There is no team on the field, just a bunch of over priced, under achieving grown men that have the distinct advantage over most men that they get paid millions without being held accountable for anything.
The Ravens, our other professional team in this town, is on the right path. Great ownership, team leadership, very good coaches, and a town that absolutely loves them. Not the O's. They suck, they don't care, and now as I head into decade number 5 of caring, I wonder why I should either.

if you get rid of tejada...
You might as well trade Guthrie while his stock is astronomically high. Same with Bedard. Same with Tejada (whose stock is quickly dropping). Trachsel. Brian Roberts. Bradford and Walker. Load up our pathetic Bowie and Norfolk teams and hopefully in 3 or 4 years, some of those prospects will pan out to be good players - and THEN reinvest in whichever FA is crazy enough to play for us.
That's a REAL rebuilding process. Not trading away one player per bad year.

Exactly...
But let's face it, change needs to happen at the very top. Until it does it will be the same-old-same-old every year, where we overpay for mediocre free agents who are supposed to be the "last piece" that makes the team competitive. It's a sad joke.
This offseason we will hear about how the team expects to be "very active" in the FA market, and the team expects to get to .500, and be really competitive by 2010.

Agree with everything here
I had planned a trip down to the Yard this July with my wife and son (I live in New England) but I have canceled my plans. The prospect is too depressing, as much as I love the city of Baltimore and all the other things available there besides the Orioles.
Instead, we're going to Cooperstown, to see Eddie Murray's and Cal's plaques. And Brooksie's and Frank's etc.
If, by September, they've gutted the team and put in some young hustling players, I'll reconsider a trip to Baltimore. Just can't do it now. Just can't.
Wish it weren't so.

Hustle...
I had a deep affection for Pete Rose when I was growing up..and it wasn't because of him the man..it was because he truly had mediocre talent...epsecially on the bases amd in the field..but he freakin outhustled everyone else..and worked his ass off..to be the best he could possibly be. He was great because he worked at it..and it was infectious to his TEAM MATES...

What do you think it'll take?
So what will it take for Angelos to finally realize? WILL he ever realize? What if the Orioles lose 100 games? Will that do it? 110? How low will the attendance have to drop? 15,000 on a consistant basis? 10,000? Is there ANYTHING that can happen where Angelos and the front office will finally see that their "plan" isn't working?

Trading Miggy
As far as rebuilding is concerned with young guys, the Orioles have Bedard and Markakis and that's it boys. Guthrie's success is still far too small of a sample size for me leaving us with 2 players and that's it. Like one of the posters above said, this is an extremely bad team with players that nobody and I mean nobody wants.

Honest to God
Looking at the Ravens, it shocks me how poorly handeled THE ENTIRE Orioles organization is. The Ravens grow talent in their own back yard by drafting very well and having a hands-off owner in both Biscotti and Modell. Sure the Ravens have a few superstarts, but they feel that 52 men together can win football games and thats what they do. Look what they've done for us: 5 of 10 winning seasons, the greatest single season defense ever, a superbowl, and arguably one of the greatest defensive players ever.
As to trading Miggy, who cares. All that will do is lose some money for Angelos because less tickets will sell and probably won't generate more wins. Looking back on Tejada's career in Baltimore, if he had played for the Yankees or Redsox and had the same numbers, (probably better with people to protect him and more to drive in along with motivation) he would have been a legitamite MVP candidate every year. In my opinion, this entire team needs to be revamped from top to bottom. The manager sucks, the power hitting sucks, chemistry sucks, the owner sucks, the bullpen sucks, clutch hitting sucks, and finally the fan support sucks.
Its such a shame because people in Baltimore want to go to Orioles games, and Camden is such a beautiful park and people want an excuse to go, but not when your team is consistently trying to be a cellar dweller (which is easier now that the Devil Rays are almost half respectable). When the pitching staff was made young and fresh in Burres/Guthrie, there was great succes. I think that the Orioles don't have much to lose and should clean house, raising their own players and not signing over the hill veterans with no motivation to win.

Thanks for the fine lead post, SC...
I have nothing of substance to add to the Miggy issue (trade him for anything reasonable); on the larger issue, organization, I do want to mention two disturbing things (with apologies in advance to those for whom they will constitute repetition):
- The sad irony of the utter organizational disarray we see here is that, as you know, this was a model franchise for decades-- and this fact alone was sufficient to attract many fans, of whom I'm one (since the late 70's). The team I rooted for as a kid was taken over by an evil man who turned a great franchise into his personal plaything and a national joke. I don't need to finish this paragraph, do I...
- There are not many fan bases in MLB which will long tolerate the schizophrenia we are being asked to live under: we root for individual players and for the success of the team, of course, but just as naturally against an inept on-field management and against an egotistical, counterproductive owner-- an evil man who turned a great franchise...and hey, I don't have to finish this one either.
And I wish I were Tsar of All the Russias, too.
Thank you, doctor, I feel much better now.

miggy
I use to laugh at them but now I know what it must have been like to be a Bengals fan in the ninties but even there fans got sick of that. It got so bad that the city governement sued the team for violation of there lease of the new stadium. Their point was that the team failed to put a quality product on the field which in turn failed to draw fans and the bengals failed to live up to the set attendance standards.
This might be what it would take for the Orioles organization to wake up. I thought about this last night in terms of my direct t.v. subscription. I wonder if I could sue the Orioles for a refund of the MLB package subscription fee. Maybe this would be something Angelos would understand since he made his millions in court off of asbestos. Take his ass to court in a class action lawsuit of Orioles fans who are Direct TV subscribers and sue him for a refund. When I purchased it I did so under the premiss that the team was going to be better because that is what the FO has been telling me. Well they are worse than they were last year an d if the trend follows they will be even worse next year but with a new revamped bull pen.
