Oh my God, the Orioles won a game

Seven different Orioles scored a run, Corey Patterson actually got a hit, and Jeremy Guthrie was dominant over eight innings to give the Orioles a 7-1 win in San Diego, ending their nine-game losing streak, and giving Dave Trembley a .500 record.

On the other hand, Jay Gibbons still managed to go 0-for-4. I'd trade him for a trial copy of Windows Solitaire.

In a week where there's been largely nothing good to say about this franchise, let's go ahead and say it again: Jeremy Guthrie is awesome. This is nothing to do with people being unfamiliar with him (knock on wood). This is just flat-out excellent pitching. He keeps the ball over the plate, keeps it in the park, and even without overpowering stuff, has the balls to challenge opposing hitters. His ERA is now 2.42.

Right now, Guthrie and Roberts are the only two Orioles really worthy of All-Star nods. Who'd have figured? Not me, that's for sure. I've eaten some crow over things, but this Jeremy Guthrie crow is to die for. Seriously, try some.

HEY. Someone got here searching Google for "Jay Gibbons shirtless" -- WHO?

Bedard...
...may be worthy of an All-Star nod. His ERA isn't as good, but he leads the league in strikeouts. If I were picking a team to try to win the game and had to take one Oriole, it would be Bedard.

oh, duhr
How the hell did I forget about Bedard? There's our big three: Guthrie, Bedard, Roberts.

Guthrie...
...what's going on with him anyway? He was picked up off waivers six months ago. It's not like he's a prospect. He's 28 years old. He had an ERA of 6.98 last year. Why is he pitching like Greg Maddux in his prime?

I almost said
because he came to Baltimore...and then I laughed, really hard.

mazzone
just because mazzone failed with danny cabs (and let's face it - if ray miller couldn't fix him, ilt just can't be done) doesn't meanc that mazzone hasn't worked some magic with guthrie.  you gotta figure that there's also TONS of resentment on his part, because it's been the "penn then loewen then penn then loewen then penn" show.  "kid"'s got something to prove, and he's sure doing it.

Guthire
Guthrie has always had the pedigree, but he seems to be a creature of habit and the Indians were alwyas jerking him around.  a sense of being can do wonders for a guy.  lest we forget, these guys are part-human too.

Don't forget
The first thing Sam and Leo did when they put him in the rotation was tell him "You are NOT auditioning for this job. It's yours. Be comfortable."

So he didn't have the spectre of losing his spot in the rotation with two bad starts. And lo and behold, he's never had two bad starts.

Not Guthrie

He's all machine, baby.

I
wasn't trying to slam Mazzone, just saying how many guys do you see come to Baltimore and be this good? Absolutely give credit to Mazzone, and like Duck said for him and Sammy telling him he's not auditioning.

by jloving on Jun 21, 2007 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Mazzone and the two seamer
I have to be honest.  When the O's signed Guthrie, I was excited.  I knew his profile from following him in the minors and He just screamed out to me as a guy who Leo could help.

He's smart, has a good fastball and he's pitching to contact instead of trying to miss bats and falling behind like he did in Cleveland.  He also lost two years of development time during a mission.

I'll admit - I'm a hypocrite
After ranting about the family cancelling it's family outing to the Yard, if Guthrie takes the mound, I may have to sneak out to a game.

I'd rather eat my face
than see Jay Gibbons shirtless. Although, if he had a bag over his head and I didn't actually know it was Jay Gibbons I was looking at, it would be OK.

How kick ass would it be...
if Bedard saw Guts as a threat to the "ACE" title and started pitching even MORE lights out and it turned into some awesome competition to be the BEST pitcher on the team-no, IN BASEBALL- and we ended with THE TWO BEST PITCHERS in the universe.

it'd be awesome
But I can't possibly imagine Bedard caring that much.

My favorite thing about Guts
is the sheer flabbergastedness expressed by Thorne EVERY Guts game about how he was picked up off of the waiver wire... anyone else notice this?

I'm OK with that
Let's face it, a few more runs and this guy's in the race for Cy Young. I'm pretty amazed we got him off the waiver wire and he's THIS good.

hey...
isn't that dude guthrie pitched against sort of the bizarro guthrie?  there's some guy in the nl that was waived and passed over by scores of teams that's been pretty good.  isn't that germano?

by jq higgins on Jun 21, 2007 11:19 AM EDT up reply actions

I believe so
Thorne was talking about it last night.  So yeah, I think it's him.

hmmm...
There can be no bizarro Guthrie. The Orioles are the bizarro everything.

by crawjo on Jun 21, 2007 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions

so
Guthrie is the bizarro Germano?

Yes
Both are waiver-wire miracles.  But last nights Battle Royale proved that GUTHRIE IS BEST!
