A Note from SC...: Ohhhh boy.
Update [2007-6-21 12:37:6 by duck]:Here's the link to the ESPN.com story.
From FOX Sports: From FOXSports.com

Former Marlins manager Joe Girardi turned down the Orioles' managing position on Thursday, saying, "At this point in time, it's not right for me and my family."

"It's a great organization. There's a great history. It's a great sports town," Girardi told FOXSports.com. "I had a great meeting with them. I was very impressed. But at this time, it's not just right."

Ummm
does any else see the possible repercussions of this if this is in fact what MacPhail promised PA?  Now Petey won't EVER trust another baseball mind...  EVER!  Jesus Christ, maybe, MacPhail can pass Trembley for Girardi just put PA at ease.  Does this mean the MacPhail era is over already?  Wouldn't surprise me with Petey.

I can't imagine
Andy would guarantee he could bring in Girardi. That would be just stupid.

I didn't think he would take that shitty job any.  He's eyeballing a job with the Yankees or another top-tier franchise.

The Orioles should get right to interviewing and hiring Davey Johnson.

I'm not in such a rush. MacPhail will need time to figure out who's actually going to BE on this team next year. Let Trembley keep the job for the rest of the year - maybe he proves himself worthy of keeping it. If not, who have we really lost out on?

Same old, same old
Every O's fan favorite writer, Ken Rosenthal, posted this this morning:
Money could be another issue.

Girardi, 42, likely is seeking a contract of at least three years with an annual salary of at least $1 million -- a deal that would be the largest ever given by the Orioles to a manager.

While a source close to the negotiations spoke of a potential "money snag" with Girardi, the Orioles might have little choice but to accede to his wishes.

So we lose our #1 target because Petey's being too cheap?

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss...

BALTIMORE -- Joe Girardi has declined an offer from the Baltimore Orioles to become their next manager, his agent, Steve Mandel, told ESPN on Thursday.

Girardi interviewed with the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday, and ESPN's Peter Gammons reported that the team offered him their vacant managerial job.

The pertinent details...
f Girardi ultimately decides he doesn't want to endure another meddlesome owner and chooses to wait for a better job, three names high on the Orioles' wish list are believed to be Davey Johnson, Jerry Manuel and Don Baylor, though not Dusty Baker, whose association with MacPhail in Chicago ultimately didn't work for either of them. As of Wednesday afternoon, the Mets had not been called about Manuel, another indication the whole focus is on Girardi. Word was, the Orioles were waiting for Girardi's nod before beginning salary talks.

In any case, the Orioles should see improvement. Fired manager Sam Perlozzo is said to have lost the front office with his handling of the revamped bullpen and lost the clubhouse in recent weeks when he publicly challenged Daniel Cabrera to "be a man ... to go out and finish the game.'' And when he told Jay Gibbons "you're my guy'' before benching him a few hitless games later.

To be brutally honest...
Baylor is guaranteed to get an interview now.

A). He fulfills the MLB mandate to consider minority candidates.

B). He has managed before, so Peter Angelos can feel like he's going with a known quantity.

C). He has an Orioles background, so Peter can say he's bringing back The Orioles Way.

Again, I am NOT promoting the hire of Don Baylor. I'm just saying he's a lock to get interviewed now.

manager
I don't know if I care all that.  The team will still suck regardless of who takes over.  I think managers are massively overrated in terms of W/L.  If the Yanks hired Sam Perlozzo right before the 1996 season, we would talking about HOF manager Perlozzo.  I sort of like the A's approach.  I like the A's approach, forget the flashy names, just hire someone internally who's compete enough to execute company policy.

by birdman on Jun 21, 2007 12:42 PM EDT reply actions

There is no company policy
That's the appeal of Johnson, he already "gets it".  No matter what garbage the front office puts on his roster, he won't be shooting himself in the foot with his in-game decisions like Perlozzo always did.

by yurizanow on Jun 21, 2007 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions

This is true.
The company has no policy.  It hasn't had one since 1983 or thereabouts.  It has competing factions, probably more concerned about internal politics than overall organizational strategy.  This is the hallmark of bad leadership.

by Jonnypops on Jun 21, 2007 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions

"There is no company policy."

Do you really want to list the all the differences between the A's and the O's.

The A's are like the anti-orioles.
And like anti-matter and matter, they destroy the Orioles whenever they come in contact.

by BrianS on Jun 21, 2007 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

The A's are the O's of the 1970's
They're slightly less successful and without a great manager, but they operate in pretty much the same way.

Oddly enough, the Orioles themselves have become the anti-Orioles, pre-1983 Orioles, that is.

What a great image you painted...
seriously, I checked my shoes after reading that.

I would just rather Trembley stay on board and allow this team to completely crash and burn to the level where a full-scale rebuild is the only option (even to Angeblows).

I'm down with Bobby.
I'd take him over Manuel or Baylor.  Onviously Davey is still the first choice though.

by Jonnypops on Jun 21, 2007 12:58 PM EDT reply actions

Girardi and money? Back to Johnson!
What exactly has Girardi done to warrant a rich managerial contract? You habve to think Torre/Mazilli told him what a nut case it was here.

I kind of fell for Johnson when he said he said the following:

"My kids were born in Baltimore, I grew up in the organization, I had the opportunity to come back and manage it. You know where your roots are, where your heart is and you want them to continue to be good."

Yeah, perhaps I'm a sap and Johnson was just saying the polite thing. But can you imagine Giradi giving a damn about Baltimore and brining back good baseball to a town that is starving for it? Joe is all bout Joe.

A bit off topic. This is the kind of statement that is lacking from the Warehouse. Most (all?) of their statements are wordsmithed bullshit that tend to reek insincerity.

Anyhow, a Johnson return could be a dud, but this is one time I wouldn't mind being a bit parochial in my outlook.

Failures don't plan to fail; they fail to plan.

by drj on Jun 21, 2007 1:17 PM EDT reply actions

Two things scare me
about getting my wish for the return of Davey Johnson.

1986 Earl Weaver
2004-Present Joe Gibbs

Who did that work out?

by duck on Jun 21, 2007 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Gibbs
The thing about a Gibbs comparison is that the game has just passed Gibbs by. If Davey still has his faculties (which he should), his strategies still work. Earl had a shitty pitching staff and a mediocre and injured lineup in '86, he couldn't apply Weaverball to John Shelby or 38-year old Lee Lacy getting 500+ PAs.
