You only had to look at my info page here
Tis where I store all pictures I enjoy and may wish to one day use as a sig.

Also, I predict that Rodrigo swoops into Baltimore, shuts the Orioles down, gives the press a few excellent quotes, and just as quickly disappears from our lives forever.

RODRIGO
I sold Rodrigo Lopez a pair of headphones once.  He was shopping with little Rodrigo and wandered into my life.  I convinced him to buy a pair of too-expensive Sony earbuds.  I recognized him immediately but didn't let on that I was a little starstruck, but asked for his autograph when the transaction was complete.  He sort of smiled a shy smile that immediately endeared me to him, signed my business card, shook my hand (he offered his PITCHING hand to me, unsolicited) and left.

This was, of course, about the time that he started sucking, early in the 2005 season.  My friends all blame me for ruining his career - I somehow sucked all of the talent from his arm just by shaking his hand.  It is my fault that the Orioles ultimately tanked in '05.

I dismissed their accusations as voodoo and superstition.  Until this season.  In late March, I am ashamed to say that I sold Danys Baez a broadband card for his notebook computer.  I didn't recognize him until he handed me his credit card (which was declined, and he had to use a second one - I found this quietly humorous, considering the contract he had just signed).  I was once again a little starstruck, but decided not to ask him for an autograph.  I set him up with everything he needed and he EXTENDED HIS PITCHING HAND TO ME, once again UNSOLICITED.  We shook and he left.

And now he sucks, and I really do think it is my fault.

The meeting-famous-person thing:
A few years ago, when I was teaching in Petersburg, I was walking down the hallway outside my fitness club when I noticed a guy heading in my direction who looked like a too-tall version of "the Russian Michael Jackson," Filip Kirkorov. He stopped to look at some jewelry in a display case (the club is in fancy hotel with various expensive shops), and it dawned on me that this was Kirkorov-- having only seen him on TV, I just didn't realize how tall he was.

Anyway, I'm not a Fil fan (any more than a Michael Jackson fan), so I went on my way. Telling my students this story later in Moscow, however, got this reaction: "And you didn't kill him?!? You could've saved us all years of musical agony and you just let him go?!?"

They were kidding...mostly. But I did have my Swiss Army knife in my backpack.

Anyway, Phil: If Petey or Pretend Commissioner Bud come into the store, You're The Guy, okay? We're counting on you, buddy...

I'm on it, coach.
I'll keep an eye out for any Oriole higher-ups.  I actually helped an Orioles scout once, too.  I noticed he had some sort of MLB id in his wallet when he took out his credit card and asked him about it, and he said he worked "in town".  The credit card was one of those team-themed cards, and his had the Yankees logo on it.  I was a little disappointed to see that.  I didn't touch him though!

And if I see any Russians wearing a single white glove, maybe I'll skip the handshake and go straight for the trachea.

re:
Make sure that Russian id doesn't say Andrei Lugovoi or have any other KGB logo. From what I could see, polonium 210 induces a pretty unpleasant death.

I'm going to decline lunch at the Kremlin...
...if I get invited. Word on the street is the specialite de la maison there is Borshch a la Polonie Deux Cent Dix.

[In fairness to Fil Kirkorov, btw, I happened to see a Russian MTV segment on his back-up singers (the Fillets or Filettes or something) a while after "meeting" him in the hotel corridor, and Fil made a brief appearance in it. What surprised me was that he came off as pretty UN-Michael Jackson ("Look, I just do this show-biz routine every night to make a living, OK-- I'm not a great musical talent, but people don't get cheated, it's a good spectacle. And the Filettes are a big part of the reason.") It was pretty disarming.

So I was sort of glad, actually, that I didn't fillet him with the ol' Swiss Army knife after all.

one better
flying back from vegas to dc last october, with a layover in hotlanta.  and who should i see in the airport?  everyone's favorite analyst, john kruk!

krukie is waiting for his flight, and in line at burger king.  his family is sitting to the side.

so, i'm looking at this massive, MAMMOTH of a man, when someone behind me says, "hey, that's john kruk!" in a voice that would wake the dead.  he turned, and looked at me, nodded, and then kept looking at me, as if awaiting a response.

two thoughts came into my mind instantly.  the first, which i did not say, was, "hey, how's your ball?"

the second i did say, not even thinking, really.  he was clearly buying food for him and his family, and so what popped out of my mouth was, "wow, mr. kruk, do you always eat that much?"

yeah...good times.

Moscow here mopping up a Guthrie rerun ...
OK, time to start looking around for a stat to express Guthrie's deserved-but-not-achieved-and-largely-unnoticed-except-by-Joe-Angel awesome status. Something like highest number of QS no-decisions (or consecutive QS ND's), yet also reflecting WHIP and ERA leadership over the same period in said category.

At the end of the year we should also be able to come up with some sort of unique new award, e.g. Only Player Ever to Qualify as Legitimate Ace of Starting Staff of an MLB Team With Three [3] Wins for the Season.

What the hell, eh? Smile: nobody named Baez lost this game. Whoopee.

OK, I get to watch this next one. BUH DARD BUH DARD BUH DARD. See ya tonight...

p.s. Clemens plays hard, you gotta give him credit. A lot, in fact. Even if you dislike the team or the player, it's still gratifying to watch a good veteran work hard, use his smarts and earn his dough, especially when Father Time is taking bets against him.
