September 8: Take Back the Yard

The Loss Column is organizing a fan rally on September 8th to "Take Back the Yard" from Red Sox Nation when Boston visits the O's.

I usually don't go in for things like this or want to support them, but this one is a good, fun idea, and it revolves around fan appreciation and supporting the O's, even though the team isn't very good. This isn't like Nestor Aparicio's stupid fan walkout that was more about getting attention than anything worthwhile.

how much I hate the Red Sox?

Just 3 of many reasons.

They clearly have the $$$ to run with the larger canines of the league (NY, the other NY, LA, the other LA), yet they whine like they're working with a Pirates-like budget. Bunch of rats pretending to be mice.
Selig's Grand Inquisitor, George Mitchell, is a part owner. In other words, what Papi gets away with, Giambi, Bonds & Sheffield don't.
Curt Schilling. Anyone more vile currently infesting North American sports? Well, OK, Michael Vick, but I had to think about it.

Seriously, I can honestly say I was more enraged by the Cards losing in '04 than I was by any O's loss.

Disagree

Completely with the bashing of the protest. Was not about "self promotion" or gaining listeners. Nestor was smart enough to know that he was alienating as many people as he was attracting. It was about DISGRACING our buffoonish owner and attracting national coverage on our plight. Did it work? Yes. Was it fun? Absolutely. Will this work? No. So to throw stones at Nestor or the cause is funny. I don't mind the Red Sox fans taking over. If not for them or Yankee fans most of the local bars and restaraunts would lay off most of their staff. Another point of the protest. But idiots let their hatred/jealousy of Nestor color their thinking. But unless you "take back the yard" 80 nights a year you've accomplished nothing.

I'm in your camp on ths one

Nestor's idea was not to 'take back the night' or whatever this current thing is called. The idea was to shine a spotlight on the inept ownership of Peter Angelos. It worked. Angelos made a few stupid quotes about all the fans and displayed that it both bugged him and he's spiteful. He subsequently backtracked and said he only meant Nestor. Everyone I know who paid attention caught that.

Forget taking back one night. I want 81 nights. Maybe Nestor's ploy was another (tiny) burr under Angelos' saddle that contributed to this supposed handing over duties to MacPhail.

that Peter Angelos gives a gnat's ass what Nestor is saying or doing?
I think not...Nestor is a tool. He is more of a bloviated bag of ill wind than any sports journalist in town, including our favorite whipping boy around here, Schmuck.
You want a spotlight on the team's and especially ownership's lack of caring about the fans point of view, just listen to Steve Davis EVERY NIGHT on WBAL from 6-9pm. He rips PA every single day, over and over again. He and Schmuck's ripping on a daily basis, even during the off season, is the single most important reason that WBAL lost the O's radio contract this year after having it for like 30 or 40 years.
Nestor ain't got nothing to do with nothing..except promoting Nestor.

Of course they are ALL looking to promote themselves and get listeners. Bashing Angelos is a sure way for all of the above to tap into an insulted and disaffected fan base. (I mean insulted because I don't know many fans who don't think the O's think they are ignoramuses). I'm not saying Nestor is an angel and had no selfish motives. However, he's not alone.

Nestor is the guy who got the fans out to rally. He's the guy who provoked the stupid public statements and had Angleos very publicly demonstrate he's a tool. Nestor got the frustration a national audience. Did it accomplish much? No. But maybe, just maybe, it contributed to Angelos' harsh treatment by the public (baseball) press after the Perlozzo firing. Maybe, just maybe, it contributed to Angelos finally giving up to some degree with the MacPhail hiring. Maybe it didn't have anything to do with it.

You believe what you want, but I'm not letting my personal feelings about Nestor or any of the above enter into it. In the end, Nestor did what any entrepreneur or talk show host would do to get an audience. And it ALL shines a spotlight on the miserable wrinkled bag that owns the O's.

I mean...

...who knows what people's motives are? There's probably some shades of grey at work. I'm sure Nestor didn't mind having his name splashed across the press. But the fans that showed up for that walkout certainly had the interests of the ballclub and city in mind. I just wish the thing was better organized. They did that shit during a weekday game, in a half empty stadium, with some silly ass time symbolism. If I didn't know better, I'd say this thing had all the hallmarks of Orioles management.

No surprise there

I mean we're talking about a dropoff of hundreds of thousands of people. Probably over a million annually since the ballpark's attendance was at its peak. I wonder though if it was pressure from the local vendors that caused the team to change the schedule on their weekend games from day to night this year. I would imagine that would bring more money into the restaurants and bars.

No, that's not it

It's the national TV contract. The 1 pm Saturday game on FOX is the only game allowed to be on. Rather than go with 4 p.m. starts, most clubs elected to go with a 7 p.m. start when 1 p.m. wasn't an option.

And let's face it, the O's knew they were never going to be a 1 p.m. Saturday game on FOX.
