Never Forget - Why I hate NYY

At about 7:05 p.m. tomorrow night, Derek Jeter will trot out to and stand on second base with his team holding a two-run lead they should never had.

And a few outs later, the Orioles loss on June 28 will be official, barring a miraculous comeback.

Then the series really starts.

I want to beat these bastards BAD. BAD, I say. 3-2 wins won't be enough - I want to blow out their bullpen, put two of their starters on DL and get Joe Torre thrown out of at least 2 of the games.

It's irrational. It may even be stupid. It's certainly unrealistic.

But I want a f'ing SWEEP this weekend.

Go O's.

Use this space to explain WHY you hate NYY. Next Monday or so, let's do the same thing about BOS.

Update [2007-7-27 12:48:14 by duck]:Since it made the front page, I did a little editing for language.

why I hate Yanks
ARod - Greedy ass, choker, plus he's insecure geek.
Jeter - Pretty boy who can't play D.
Cano - One hit wonder.
Giambi - Cheater.
Matsui - Pervert.
Damon - Just plain sucks.
Abreau - "I'd rather walk because I'm too lazy to swing the bat."
Posada - coattail rider.

I kinda like ARod
He's the best player of his or maybe any generation, and if you look at his postseason stats with the Mariners, he was very good.

He's been the victim of small sample size the last few years. And Jeter was just as bad some of those series (and worse in the ALCS against Boston in 03) and gets no shit.

FJM had a good post about this recently.

A-Rod??????
Fucking bushleague bullshit. Craps his pants in the playoffs, and pushes a 1B's glove like a little girl in U8 softball to break up a play and YELLING shit in a game to throw people off a catch?

Bush-league bullshit. Earl Weaver would have ripped off his head asnd shit down his neck. Joe Torre" "He shouldn't have done that." Gee, ya think?

He was a prick, a well-known prick. That's why Boston got rid of him. He COMPLETELY instigated that one.

Hairstyles aside...
A-Rod acted and looked like a douchebag on that play. A hard slide into 2nd is one thing, a sissy-lookin' one-handed swing at a guy's glove is another.

A-Rod is a tool and no set of numbers will persuade me otherwise. You can keep your "facts" - like Stephen Colbert, I think with my gut.

Let's see
what kind of "truthiness" the end of his career will bring.

NY Islander fans kept saying Gretzky was a wuss who couldn't win it all - until he did.

WTF???
Gretzky won 4 cups in 5 years, right after the Isles did. He was what, 24, when he won his first one?

A-Rod is a TOOL. A 32-year-old tool WITHOUT a ring. And unless he signs with another team, that won't be changing anytime soon.

A-Rod...
...might be a tool in some ways, but he is the best player in MLB and has been for a while and will continue to be. Earl would have LOVED him (and Earl never ever turned down any advantage in a game no matter how minute- for example, penciling in Steve Stone as a DH for an entire season in order to actually potentially save a bench bat in case of a sudden pitching switch).

I hate the Yankees as much as anyone here, but calling A-Rod a choker is pointless. Go check out the post on Firejoemorgan the previous poster referenced. A-Rod didn't pitch in any of those series "he" lost. People seem to not like him solely because he's so good. If he goes FA in the offseason I'd kill to see the Os get in on him even though I know they won't.

thank you
He's a fantastic baseball player.

Yeah, the Arroyo thing and the shouting at Howie Clark (who had actually, you know, just come back from the bush leagues for his annual cup o' coffee) were dumb and antagonistic, but he's a great player and gets a terrible rap. Terrible. Undeserved.

by jq higgins on Jul 27, 2007 9:31 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

some of it is his fault
The slapping, the shouting, etc.

But being called a choker for having 12 bad at-bats in one series three and a half years ago? That same series most of his team was bad. Rivera blew two saves. That's not his fault.

Running around with strippers? Yeah, he shouldn't do that, but plenty of baseball players are scumbags but don't get huge headlines in the New York Post about their infidelities. He doesn't deserve that. Or at least if he does, so do all the other guys who don't get all the crap he does.

He probably should never have left Seattle, but it's not his fault Tom Hicks was stupid enough to outbid himself and give ARod a ludicrous contract. And it's not his fault someone else will probably do it again and give him 8 years at 30 million a year this offseason. I wish the Orioles would.

by pipkin on Jul 27, 2007 10:10 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Come on now
Grownups know there's no such things as clutch players or chokers.  You're either a good player or a bad player.  That's it.

A-Rod has played significant amounts of seven postseason series.  He was amazing in two of them, OK in three, eh in one, and terrible in another. That's not too bad.  He's a significantly better postseason player than Ted Williams or Willie Mays.

His teams don't win the big one because they aren't good enough to win the big one.  He can't pitch or hit for everybody else, so they don't win.  Everybody focused on him playing poorly in last year's divisional series, but no one on the Yankees played well.

If I could will any player in baseball onto the Orioles, it would be A-Rod.  He's the best player in the game and it isn't even close.

RE: Clutch
There is actually no real agreement among people SABR guys about whether there is a such thing as clutch or not.  The thing is it's extremely difficult to actually quantify.  Personally, I think it's only logical to assume that some guys are more clutch than others.   In nearly every  activity some people perform better than others under pressure, so I don't know why baseball would be any different.

You can argue that some guys are clutch because they don't play up to their ability in every day situations (lazy) or become more focused in pressure situations.  And I think it's more than possible that some guys are non-clutch and become overwhelmed when they under a lot of stress.

Really, I don't see how its possible to not have clutch and un-clutch players (especially the latter).  But I just don't know how you can impartially quantify it.

I don't know that I would.  I'm not saying that I would come back to Baltimore if their offer was overly low (although, I kind of remember the reason he left was more about the O's not re-upping him the year before); but I really don't think if I was a in demand FA that I would ever go to that fucking team.  I hate them too much.  Obviously, it's easy for me to say when I don't have that opportunity.

But as I said, I'm not applying logic to my dislike of Mussina.  He was far and away probably my favorite Oriole at the time and I probably liked him more than any Oriole ever when he was here.  Even more than Cal.  He then went to my most hated team.  He'll always be a dirt ball to me; whether that is logical or not.

I'm just glad that he was able to get that ring that he always wanted.  Oh wait, nevermind.

In all seriousness
If you were Mike Mussina, why would you stay with the Orioles?  You're saying if the Yankees offered you a dumptruck full of cash, you would've said "no sir, I like working for Peter Angelos just fine."  He already gave them a hometown discount a few years before and they took advantage of him.  It only make sense that on the next contract he would take the money and run.  This is America, that's what your supposed to do.  Mussina doesn't care if it's Yankees.  There are very few players who feel any genuine sense of rivalry or disdain towards other teams.  They're professionals and like any professionals, they go where the money is.  Why do you expect an athlete to act less in his best own interests than you would an accountant or a plumber?

As for getting a ring, since he joined the Yankees he's played in two World Series and made the playoffs every year.  Maybe he hasn't won the big one, but he certainly picked a team that gave him a better shot than the one he left.

Look, it's become pretty clear that good players usually don't enjoy playing for the Baltimore Orioles.  Hell, Raphael Palmeiro took a pay cut when he rejoined the Rangers and only came back to Baltimore when his skills had diminished so much that the O's were one of his few options.

Are you going to be mad at Brian Roberts and Erik Bedard when they reject the Orioles inevitably low-ball offer and join a team that has had a winning season in the past ten years?  You shouldn't be.

by yurizanow on Jul 27, 2007 5:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Um...
Why do you have to be so literal? I can't stand Mussina because he left for the Yanks. Likewise, I will feel the same towards BJ Ryan, and weill feel the same if Roberts or Bedard left. It's my perogative as a fan. Why are you trying to make it anything else?

Good for Mike, he lost the WS a few times.  I'm sure that was what he was expecting to do.

Are you going to be mad at Brian Roberts and Erik Bedard when they reject the Orioles inevitably low-ball offer and join a team that has had a winning season in the past ten years?

To be clear, I'm not mad at Mussina, I hate him.  There's a big difference.  If BRob and Bedard leave to the Yankees or Red Sox, then yes, I'll probably hate them, although probably not as much.  If they leave for another team, then I'll probably be somewhat fine with it.  I don't really hold anything against BJ Ryan when he left.

And do you really think the Orioles low-ball players?  If anything, I think they overpay for marginal talent.  That's part of the reason why they are in the mess they are right now.  They also seem to like to buy second tier talent, which is usually not a good value.

I've never had a problem at Yankee Stadium, even the infamous LF belachers. Wore an O's hat to a BAL-NYY game in later 90s as Mussina was pitching against Petitte.

Gets to be a 0-0 game into the 8th, and the natives get restless. I start getting the "Take the fucking hat off!" yells aimed in my direction, and I finally stand up and say "We're 20 games out. What the hell threat are we to you?"

I heard a bunch say "Oh yeah," and I wasn't bothered again.

UM was rated by SI or someone as one of the most obnoxious student sections a few years ago. Something like "Not as nuanced as Duke, but very effective."

UMD
I was in the stands for every football game and like 10 basketball games this past year. The student section isnt as bad as the national press likes to label it, that "fuck you JJ" incident tarnished our rep permanently. The worst thing we do is the rock and roll part 2 chant where we proclaim the opposing team sucks. We dont even approach the level of those jackasses in the Yankees videos.

Yeah
I chuckled at the YMCA "rendition." I'll give them points for creativity -- then dock them for rampant homophobia.

As for the UMD student section thing... Yeah we were pretty loud and obnoxious when I was there (01-05), and we got a ton of negative press locally and nationally stemming from the post-Final Four and post-National Championship riots, then more for the F U J J chant, but those things happen at other schools, too, and just as bad.

West Virginia's student section is 50x worse than Maryland's (throwing D batteries at opposing football players), and no chants we did ever came close to UVA's "crackhead parents" chant at Juan Dixon.

This list can be rather long, and most of my gripes center around the knucklehead "fans". However, no one has mentioned Joe Torre's disgusting habit.

He doesn't take small swipes that the camera accidentally captures. No sir. He's digs and tugs and picks with great vigor and duration for the national audience. It seems that every second or third dugout shot has Torre tugging at his schnozz. It's disgusting.

here I go again on my own
ANDY PETTITTE

Truthfully, there's not much to dislike about Andy Pettitte. He seems like a good dude and a real professional. Here's why I hate Andy Pettitte, even disregarding his long-standing success against the Orioles: FOX cameras are in love with him. Back in the '90s when the Yankees used to win the World Series, Pettitte would be shown it seemed like 10 or 12 times every playoff game, even if he was doing nothing more exciting than sitting in the dugout or out in the bullpen. And when he DID pitch, oh would McCarver just about orgasm over him eventually. I mean, sure, he's a handsome guy, but for the love of God.

YANKEES/RED SOX

It is a great rivalry now because both of the teams are good. And even though I loathe large portions of both fanbases, I do appreciate anything where there's true hatred on both sides. But the rivalry is largely a fabrication on Boston's end, as the Yankees have long been the far superior franchise. Sure, right now it's a Michigan/Ohio State sort of rivalry, but for many, many, many years, it was more like Notre Dame/Navy. They always play, but the end was rarely in doubt.

BERNIE WILLIAMS

I don't like using this word much unless I'm really tired because then it is, for some reason, hilarious to me, but Bernie Williams is about the biggest pussy I've ever seen in professional base ball.

THE BRONX IS BURNING

Holy shit, really? This is about the worst fucking thing I've ever seen, and ESPN should probably stop making original dramatic programming. The Junction Boys was horrible, 3 was only saved by Barry Pepper being a really good actor, and Playmakers was a piece of shit to the maximum level. However, this is probably the worst of all. It is absurd.

This, of course, doesn't have a lot to do with the real organization, but fuck them, I blame them for lots of things that aren't really their fault because I hate them. In fact...

BILLY MARTIN AND GEORGE STEINBRENNER

Why didn't these two just fucking make out and get it over with?

YOGI BERRA

Yeah I went there. The fact that this idiot was the greatest catcher of all-time is astounding. I don't discredit his greatness as a ballplayer, but all those dipshit sayings are kinda like Ernie Banks. There's no way Banks was that happy all the time, which makes him kind of a liar, and there's no way Berra was so dumb. Plus, his son trying to do the same schtick was corny as hell.

I could go on, but lots of stuff has already been covered anyway.

To be totally fair, one thing I like about the Yankees:

Mickey Mantle was about the coolest guy to ever live, let alone play ball. He was so awesome that he could've played for the Communist all-star team and I'd still like him.

not to mention...
dale berra and the fabulous early 80s mlb coke scandal.  not sure how many folks around here remember that, but THAT was good times.  dave parker?  keith hernandez?  keith hernandez's moustache?  dudes were doing coke all up in the joint.  i'm not sure, but i think for a few weeks they painted the foul lines pink so cats wouldn't get confused.

Heres an A-Rod fun fact
Since 1996 (his first full season) through 2006 he leads the major leagues in home runs (HR), runs scored, runs batted in (RBI), total bases and extra-base hits. Of all players in baseball history at age 30, he is first all-time in both HR and runs scored, 2nd in total bases and extra base hits, 3rd in RBI, and 4th in hits. In his career to that point, Rodriguez had more HR, more RBI, more runs scored, and more base hits than all-time leaders Hank Aaron (HR and RBI), Rickey Henderson (runs scored), and Pete Rose (hits) did prior to their 30th birthdays.

Yeah, he sucks, Yankees suck.  I have been an Oriole fan for 20 some years but I cannot truly fault A-Rod for much; the play against Boston in the ALCS when he swatted the glove may have lookeds sissy, but he was trying to keep his team alive and win the game.  He could have trotted down the line and taken the out but the guy played to win.  His stats are insane, no denying it and no one is gonna say hes on steroids.  I hate the Yankees and everything about them but A-Rod really cannot be blamed for much.

Screw A-Rod
I still fuckin' hate him. Don't need a reason. Just like I hated Jum Leyritz. Didn't make a bit of sense to hate The Hit King, but I did. So sue me.

fuck Jim Leyritz
More Yankee lore bull shit. Shane Spencer and that goddamned Scott Brosius can shove it, too.

I'm so pissed right now...
I couldn't even spell Jim right.

re:

I'm not accusing him, but why won't anyone say A-Rod is/was on steroids? Would you have thought Jorge Piedra was? Ryan Franklin?

I just find it weird that we give some guys (A-Rod, Griffey, many others) the benefit of the doubt, while guys like Tejada are routinely brought up once a year.

I agree with this...
...why couldn't he be on roids?  Why can't he be on HGH right now?  He's demonstrated a propensity to cheat in public whenever he gets the chance (the glove thing, the shout, the looking at catcher's signs). Why do people think this wouldn't extend off the field?  There are plenty of ways to beat drug tests...and they don't even test for HGH.  All it takes is money.  And he's got plenty of that.

Now here's the DISCLAIMER: I'm not saying he is or isn't.  I am saying nobody knows for sure, except A-Rod.

I really agree with this
Lots of the guys who have been busted were unexpected (Rincon, Grimsley, Salas).... why does everyone give some guys the benefit of a doubt?  I think it's largely likeability.  No one casts aspersions on Griffey because most people just really like him.  But it wouldn't shock me if I found out he was using steroids (NO, I am not accusing him of such).  But if it's just likeability, I don't know why A-Rod gets the presumption of innocence.  He's great (the best of the day in fact) but hardly likeable.

Thats a valid point
I would have NEVER thought Franklin was on steroids.  But I still firmly believe that he is clean, and even if he isn´t I´m not sure it matters much because as unfair as it is to keep him out of the conversation it happens and he weasesesels his way out.

i hate..
  1. the media fascination with the yankees.
  2. jeffrey meier
  3. all the yankee players
that being said...
I would much rather have Alex Rodriguez break Hank Aaron's record than Barry Bonds.

I hate Yankee fans
They're ignorant animals.  I still vividly remember a woman with her kids who was wearing an Orioles jersey with her kids at Yankee Stadium being pelted with beer and garbage in a 1997 blowout of the Yankees up in the Bronx.  The security did nothing for twenty minutes and then eventually kicked the woman and her kids out of the stadium.  I've been to a ton of sporting events and that's the ugliest thing I've ever seen.

I live in York and have to listen to all the horseshit about how knowledgeable they are and how they demand excellence and what winners they are.  They don't know jack shit about baseball and want to run the best player in the league out of town.  I can hardly wait until A-Rod leaves and that team competes with the Orioles for fourth place.

Actually, I really have nothing against the Yankees players.  Compared to the Yankees of the late 1970's the recent models are classy gentlemen.  I always hated that whole Bronx Zoo bit.  They milked that act well into the 1980's long past its expiration date.
