Excellent! Now, B-Rob's MOTHRA hat pls!
Question: If B-Rob had been in full 'fro tonight, would the moth have landed for his MOTHRA turn, thus entertaining thousands of Texans who had nothing else to watch except people beating air?

See, life really is a series of trade-offs...

Hey Petey: enjoy THIS!

Not a mention of E-Bed.

Bedard rules
I refuse to acknowledge the idea of "E-Bed" however. First letter-first syllable has gone crazy. I also hate "B-Rob."

we just call him Rosey... he's got some case of rosecea on them cheeks.

me too hate B-Rob
However, I've heard several of his teammates refer to him as such, so I've sort of given up and sometimes call him that myself. I suppose it's legit, even if it's a bit annoying.

sorry for being the debbie downer...
"Reporters unfamiliar with Bedard were taken aback by the left-hander's prickly attitude in the wake of such success. On a night that should have been filled with joy, Bedard acted almost childishly angry and difficult. Trembley acknowledged Bedard's attitude could distort how the pitcher is perceived on the national stage."

he's gonna be easy to hate when he's pitching against us in a couple years.

i always joked around and called him Erik Bedardominance. When I came up with the nickname, he became a ruthless pitcher, so I am undoubtedly responsible for his recent success. But I don't care, cuz he's not gonna be an Oriole much longer.

by dfleis on Jul 8, 2007 9:03 AM EDT reply actions

childishly angry and difficult
In Buhdards defense, we've all seen those clubhouse interviews and the redundant and assinine questions asked by reporters.

re:
To be a star, he'll have to suck it up and act like most of the rest of the players in the league. But I get the impression the whole interview process isn't really his cup of tea, and that he doesn't care about being a star. Kinda like Mussina.

"we've all seen those clubhouse interviews and the redundant and assinine questions asked by reporters."

They may ask redundant and stupid questions but I still would love it if Bedard wasn't so recalcitrant about interview.  Irrespective of whether players SHOULD talk to reporters, I like hearing baseball talk shop.  Things like in-game strategy, who are tough outs, mistake pitches, etc are all things I wouldn't hearing.  Maybe Easy E only talks about such things in private, but that's not an option for fans.

Great line by Gibbons:
"Jay Gibbons could only shake his head in disbelief as he watched from the dugout Saturday night.

'That's as good as I've ever seen a pitcher throw,' Gibbons said. 'I've never seen so many bad swings in my life.'"

Gibbons lines
  1. "Not even when I study the game films of my own at bats."
  2. "Not even when I study the game films of Brandon Fahey's at bats."
  3. As you said, his quote speaks for itself, thus it's hard to thing of a 3rd possible cut line.

Mike Falanagan's thoughts
That's it fellas! That's the blueprint for O's future. Pitching and defense! Now if they would just go out and repeat this with some consistency.

The brain trust that is the O's front office did call up Luis Hernandez. The Luis Hernandez with a 538 OPS in Norfolk. Add him to Fahey, Gibbons, Bako and the O's have quite the bench. Hope they starters all realize they need to do what Erik just did if hey want a shot at picking up a W.

Yeah...
The Hernadez call up was another head scratcher. But I'm at least relieved to know that our organization is filled with skinny, light hitting infielders.

by RobG on Jul 8, 2007 10:28 AM EDT up reply actions

OMG
I thought people were just joking about calling up Hernandez.  They fucking did it for real?  It's amazing to me how this ballclub is able to constantly outdo even itself in the stupidity dept.

by Jonnypops on Jul 8, 2007 11:19 AM EDT up reply actions

I can only hope...
the the O's are showcasing Fahey, Birkins and Hernandez for a potential trade for Texiera. Hey, they'd be getting three players, right?!

by RobG on Jul 8, 2007 11:24 AM EDT up reply actions

In fairness
Who else should they have called up?  I don't like it either but if Mora and Tejada are both out we can't exactly have NO backup for Fahey and Gomez.

by punkrawka on Jul 8, 2007 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Huff plays 3B
and Bynum is a utility infielder.  Taking into account that we have about 15 people who can play 1B right now, that (believe it or not) Gibbons is heating up, and that we've been struggling for playing time on all of our 1B/OF/DHs this season, this move is plain old ridiculous frankly.  You need to take into account here that we've called up a player with a career .632 Minor League OPS, for positions that are fully stocked on the Big League roster.  You could pick up a rock next to the Norfolk dugout, close your eyes, throw it, and find a better player.

by Jonnypops on Jul 8, 2007 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Bynum's on the DL
Other than that, though, it's another incredibly dumb move by a front office that clearly doesn't understand that even with a good pitcher and a "good defense" (which they don't really have, but that's a story for another day), you do need to score SOMETIMES.

Ohhhh...uhhhh...yeah...
Sorry, losing Bynum didn't exactly make headlines and I was completely unaware that he was gone.  So I guess I understand the move a little more then, but  I still disagree with it.  It's just more in the line of thinking that we need two Faheys on the team  come hell or high water.  We don't.

by Jonnypops on Jul 9, 2007 8:57 AM EDT up reply actions

you are correct, the O's do not need two Faheys
They need at least three. Bako, Fahey, Bynum. We can stretch a bit and count Gibbons as four. The first three were known issues. Gibbons decided he'd also become a Belanger slugger this year.

Trade him
Move Bedard to the Dodgers. I bet they would empty half their farm system for him with their pitching issues and Bedard's performance. And remember, when you get prospects from other teams (especially the Dodgers) you get real prospects, not just guys who are young and were drafted high, like the Orioles tend to have.

by crawjo on Jul 8, 2007 7:57 PM EDT reply actions

pitching issues?
The dodgers are 4th in the mlb and 2nd in the nl in pitching i dont think the have any problem. there is no point in trading erik anyway.

I really think it's insane to trade Bedard
which is why I'm afraid they will - for some Huff's and Baez's. With Bedard and Guthrie (barring a major implosion) you have a solid 1-2 on your staff - get rid of Bedard, and you have Guthrie and Cabrera. It just seems to me like the O's would say "Cabrera will come around and we won't need him". It's illogical, but that's why it makes sense they would do it.
