O's to Extend Trembley

http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/baseball/bal-trembley0821,0,2429543.story

The Orioles will hold a news conference tomorrow to announce that Trembley's contract will be extended through the 2008 season, according to several team sources.

MacPhail declined tonight to confirm that a decision has been reached, but said: "I don't think that anyone makes a secret of the good job that Dave is doing. I think the results speak for themselves."

-------------

I don't get Trembley's fascination with batting Corey second or his love for John Parrish, but the players play hard for him.  That's the most important thing so I'm all for the one year extension.  Reading between the lines, the one year deal communicates an extended audition while allowing the front office the freedom to kick Dave to the curb in the event that a sexy managerial candidate becomes available next offseason. Unfortunately for Dave, he really doesn't have any leverage in negotiating a deal.  He gets to keep his dream job for another year.  I'm sure that's enough for him for now.  I guess Davey Johnson will have to wait another year for a possible chance to manage the O's.  Let's hope Leo stays another year.

Congrats Dave.  You deserved it.  Now don't f*ck up.

Good news
I like that exchange with Tejada, we need more of that.

Yeah, no kidding
Tejada: "Aw, coach, I've already been throwing the ball and stuff. Do I really have to do all those stretches?"

Trembly: "Put a cork in it, Miggy, we all stretch as a team."

Tejada: "Yes, sir...."

Not an amazing record under him
in itself. But for this orioles team, it's pretty damn good. He's been doing something right.

Definitely not against this move.

re:
I think Trembley is good for a team that often played lackadaisical baseball, especially once late July rolled around. Respect the game.

As for not screwing things up, I think we should direct that sentiment to the front office. I think Trembley will do his job.

Wait I thought the same thing happened to...
Sam Perlozzo?  I guess it is only a matter of time before the mercurial front office lets Dave go.  When are they going to understand that consistency is required?
Dave's fascination with batting Corey Patterson second I think might have something to do with the fact he is hitting now...and stealing bases when he gets on.
(As for John Parrish, he is screwing over the M's now.)

A note about batting orders
Let me take a minute to defend Trembley's batting orders.  I'm bugged by Corey Patterson batting second as well, but sometimes a manager has to make do with what's available.  Trembley basically has four guys that can hit a little bit:  Roberts, Markakis, Tejada, and Millar.  He understandably uses Roberts in the leadoff spot and understandably tries to construct something resembling a heart of an order with Markakis, Tejad, and Millar.  After that, all he can do is fill in the holes in the lineup and Patterson fits the second spot as well as anybody else on the team.  It's not ideal, but the Orioles aren't an ideal team.

batting order
I pretty much agree, it's not ideal but it's understandable.  Corey's hot July is now long gone but the alternatives probably won't make much of difference.  Besides, BO apparently doesn't mean that much anyway.

re: Batting Order
I'm pretty sure BP or someone at SABR has done the research and found that batting order pretty much doesn't matter, so I don't get too worked up about it any more.

And as for the extension, as Maese said in the Sun today, what was the point of doing it now? Might as well have waited and done a real manager search in the offseason.

1970 Baltimore Orioles
In 1970 the guy who batted second more than any other player was . . . Mark Belanger

Belanger was undoubtedly the worst regular on the team that year.  He hit .218 that year with a whopping .303 on-base percentage, but the Orioles still led the league in runs scored.  Weaver knew Belanger sucked, but he had to stick him somewhere and didn't want to have an entire inning where the other team got a free pass because of Belanger, Elrod Hendricks or Andy Etchebarren and the pitcher so he stuck him somewhere else in the lineup where the other players could cover for him.

Patterson is a better hitter than Mark Belanger (although not a lot better).  He has a little power and if by some miracle he gets on base, he can do some things that help.  So, there are worse choices and if the guy likes hitting there and creates a good vibe in the clubhouse or whatever, that's all the better.  Is this something the O's should do if they got some actual hitters?  Hell no, but given the circumstances I don't have a problem with it and as Weaver showed, it doesn't make a huge difference anyway.

re: perlozzo v. trembley
no comparison.  i don't think perlozzo sniffed .500 ball after his first 25 games in his "interim year."

what kind of consistency are you looking for?  consistent garbage?  like i've said before, i don't know that trembley is THE answer, but the team seems to respond to him.  when people talk about the bounce a replacement manager gets, it's usually something that's not sustainable...15-30 games, maybe?  under trembley the team has played winning ball for almost a 1/3 of the season.

Yep..
I think any doubt we have about Trembley is because he comes from our own organization. We've lost so much faith in anything Oriole that we couldn't possibly imagine that there is someone competent in our ranks. That's why we've been looking for other managers from other teams.

Perloser
From the O's website.
Sam Perlozzo begins his 2nd full season as Orioles manager after guiding the team to a 70-92 record last year...He was in his 10th season on the Orioles coaching staff and his 5th season as bench coach in 2005 when he was named as interim manager to replace Lee Mazzilli on August 4...On October 12, 2005, the Orioles removed the interim tag and Sam was named as the 16th manager in team history...In his two months as interim manager in '05, the Orioles went 23-32

So at roughly the same point in each manager's interim position there is about a 6.5 game difference in record-
                  Record  WPCT  GB
Trembley   29-25  .537
Perlozzo    23-32  .418  -6.5

I also went back to Perlozzo's first 25 games.  His record was 11-14.

Those 25 games broke down like this, starting August 4, 2005-

TEAM | REC. AGAINST | OVERALL REC.
LAA  |    1-0       |    1-0
TEX  |    1-2       |    2-2
TB   |    3-0       |    5-2
TOR  |    1-2       |    6-4
OAK  |    3-0       |    9-4
CLE  |    0-3       |    9-7
LAA  |    1-2       |    10-9
OAK  |    0-4       |    10-13
TOR  |    1-1       |    11-14

29-40 vs 29-25
That's FIFTEEN fewer losses with the same wins. I rest my case.

don't know....
...whether I like not having Girardi as manager so much it makes me like Trembely more but I think dave's done better then expected and I'm glad he'll be getting a full shot next year.

AL Records Since June 18th
In the time that Trembley has been managing the O's, here's how the AL has shaken out:

Team Performances Between June 18, 2007 and Current
AL East
Team          W     L     Pct.     GB
New York      35    24    0.593    -
Boston        32    25    0.561    2
Baltimore     29    25    0.537    3.5
Toronto       30    27    0.526    4
Tampa Bay     16    41    0.281    18

AL Central
Team          W     L     Pct.     GB
Detroit       28    28    0.500    -
Minnesota     28    29    0.491    0.5
Cleveland     27    28    0.491    0.5
Kansas City   26    28    0.481    1
Chicago       27    32    0.458    2.5

AL West
Team          W     L     Pct.     GB
Seattle       36    21    0.632    -
Los Angeles   29    25    0.537    5.5
Texas         28    27    0.509    7
Oakland       25    33    0.431    11.5

Just for kicks, here's how the wild card standings would look:

AL Wild Card
Team          W     L     Pct.     GB
Boston        32    25    0.561    -
Baltimore     29    25    0.537    1.5
Los Angeles   29    25    0.537    1.5
Toronto       30    27    0.526    2
Texas         28    27    0.509    3
Minnesota     28    29    0.491    4
Cleveland     27    28    0.491    4
Kansas City   26    28    0.481    4.5
Chicago       27    32    0.458    6
Oakland       25    33    0.431    7.5
Tampa Bay     16    41    0.281    16

One last thing regarding the team's record over 54 games (29-25) -- that's the best 54-game stretch the O's have posted since a 4/26-6/25/2005.  Considering that at the beginning of the season most of us were hoping for a record of 82-80, Trembley has done remarkably well for a 1/3 season period.  Key for me now -- no September swoon!

That's very revealing
Did you do those stats manually, or pull them from somewhere?

I'd be curious to see all records since the All-Star break, etc.

Had to do it manually
MLB.com allows you to show the standings for any given day in the season, so combining that and a little Excel spreadsheet (and it looks like work!), it's not too difficult.  The biggest pain in the neck was formatting the post here at CC.
