O's to Extend Trembley
http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/baseball/bal-trembley0821,0,2429543.story
The Orioles will hold a news conference tomorrow to announce that Trembley's contract will be extended through the 2008 season, according to several team sources.
MacPhail declined tonight to confirm that a decision has been reached, but said: "I don't think that anyone makes a secret of the good job that Dave is doing. I think the results speak for themselves."
-------------
I don't get Trembley's fascination with batting Corey second or his love for John Parrish, but the players play hard for him. That's the most important thing so I'm all for the one year extension. Reading between the lines, the one year deal communicates an extended audition while allowing the front office the freedom to kick Dave to the curb in the event that a sexy managerial candidate becomes available next offseason. Unfortunately for Dave, he really doesn't have any leverage in negotiating a deal. He gets to keep his dream job for another year. I'm sure that's enough for him for now. I guess Davey Johnson will have to wait another year for a possible chance to manage the O's. Let's hope Leo stays another year.
Congrats Dave. You deserved it. Now don't f*ck up.

Yeah, no kidding
Trembly: "Put a cork in it, Miggy, we all stretch as a team."
Tejada: "Yes, sir...."

re:
As for not screwing things up, I think we should direct that sentiment to the front office. I think Trembley will do his job.

Wait I thought the same thing happened to...
Dave's fascination with batting Corey Patterson second I think might have something to do with the fact he is hitting now...and stealing bases when he gets on.
(As for John Parrish, he is screwing over the M's now.)

re: Batting Order
And as for the extension, as Maese said in the Sun today, what was the point of doing it now? Might as well have waited and done a real manager search in the offseason.

1970 Baltimore Orioles
Belanger was undoubtedly the worst regular on the team that year. He hit .218 that year with a whopping .303 on-base percentage, but the Orioles still led the league in runs scored. Weaver knew Belanger sucked, but he had to stick him somewhere and didn't want to have an entire inning where the other team got a free pass because of Belanger, Elrod Hendricks or Andy Etchebarren and the pitcher so he stuck him somewhere else in the lineup where the other players could cover for him.
Patterson is a better hitter than Mark Belanger (although not a lot better). He has a little power and if by some miracle he gets on base, he can do some things that help. So, there are worse choices and if the guy likes hitting there and creates a good vibe in the clubhouse or whatever, that's all the better. Is this something the O's should do if they got some actual hitters? Hell no, but given the circumstances I don't have a problem with it and as Weaver showed, it doesn't make a huge difference anyway.

re: perlozzo v. trembley
what kind of consistency are you looking for? consistent garbage? like i've said before, i don't know that trembley is THE answer, but the team seems to respond to him. when people talk about the bounce a replacement manager gets, it's usually something that's not sustainable...15-30 games, maybe? under trembley the team has played winning ball for almost a 1/3 of the season.

Perloser
So at roughly the same point in each manager's interim position there is about a 6.5 game difference in record-
Record WPCT GB
Trembley 29-25 .537
Perlozzo 23-32 .418 -6.5
I also went back to Perlozzo's first 25 games. His record was 11-14.
Those 25 games broke down like this, starting August 4, 2005-
TEAM | REC. AGAINST | OVERALL REC.
LAA | 1-0 | 1-0
TEX | 1-2 | 2-2
TB | 3-0 | 5-2
TOR | 1-2 | 6-4
OAK | 3-0 | 9-4
CLE | 0-3 | 9-7
LAA | 1-2 | 10-9
OAK | 0-4 | 10-13
TOR | 1-1 | 11-14

One last thing regarding the team's record over 54 games (29-25) -- that's the best 54-game stretch the O's have posted since a 4/26-6/25/2005. Considering that at the beginning of the season most of us were hoping for a record of 82-80, Trembley has done remarkably well for a 1/3 season period. Key for me now -- no September swoon!

That's very revealing
I'd be curious to see all records since the All-Star break, etc.
