Miggi's at it again: Trade me. Oops, did I say that? I just work here...

Before Diamond Dave started his involuntary 3-day vacation, he left an interesting batting order for last night's game. One that did NOT have the names Roberts, Mora or Tejada in it.

Well, Mr. "I Coulda Been Cal!" Tejada decided to take umbrage with this perceived affront to his manhood. From today's The (Baltimore) Sun:

Asked whether he was OK with the fact that the club might want to get a look at some younger players, Tejada said, "It would be nice. Then I can go somewhere else next year. They have somebody that can play short. That would be nice for me."

When asked if that meant that he wanted to be traded, Tejada said, "It's not like that's what I want, but at least if they have somebody else, they can trade me somewhere else."

Later, given another opportunity by a reporter to clarify his statement, Tejada said that he wasn't saying whether he wanted a trade or not. "That's up to them," he said. "I just work here."

Diamond Dave wasn't having it. He states he needed to see some of the younger guys play. No messages, no hidden agendas, he said, just need to see what we have:
Asked if he was sending a message to several of his veterans, Trembley said, "It's not intentional. ... But it's time to give these other guys some opportunities to play, especially back-to-back days. Moore, we need to get a read on him. [Luis] Hernandez, we need to get him in there a little bit more frequently."

That might be at the expense of Tejada, who insisted that he was not frustrated by getting the day off. Tejada had played in 1,152 straight games before going on the disabled list June 22 with a fractured bone in his left wrist.

"I don't know what they're doing," Tejada said. "I just got an off day, and I'm going to enjoy my day off. It's good to see players if they're going to have a whole new team next year."

And The Sun is starting the "but the FANS don't want to pay to see backups!" b.s. again:

It was (69-year-old Reese) Boyd's first game of the year, and unless those starters return to the lineup, it will be his last. Catcher Ramon Hernandez and third baseman Melvin Mora also sat out the game.

"I like to see the best team clearly possible on the field," Boyd said. "Tejada and Mora, they should be on the field. I want to see them have the best chance at winning, and in order to do that, you put the very best team on the field that you have."

Because they been SOOOOO successful so far. Uh, Reese? Those players you want to see have this team at about 20 games under .500. Just sayin'.

Is The Sun TRYING to goad PGA into keeping this crappy lineup on the field all year? God Forbid we actually find out if Luis Hernandez can play short, Scotty Moore (sorry, Elvis reference) can play 3rd and Brandon Fahey is worth finding a jersey that fits.

Because some almost-70 year old paid almost $30 for a ticket.

This, this is our team, people.

Madre de Dios
Item 1. Shut the fuck up, Miggy, you fucking idiot.

Everyone wants to deal you away this offseason. Everyone. All you had to do to make it happen was keep your yap from flapping. But now that you've oh-so-subtly made it clear you want out, your stock will drop by 30% or so. The FO will get nowhere near as good a return on "disgruntled, wants a change of scenery Miggy" as they would have on "new attitude, shows up early to the park" Miggy. So now they'll wait to be "overwhelmed" by an offer which will never come, and you'll be stuck playing here next year. Nice work, Einstein.

Item 2. Reese Boyd and his family can all stay home. In fact, they should.

Sorry, Reese? I thought you said you were "an avid Orioles fan since 1952". Well, geez, if you've been following baseball for over half a century, you might be aware that September call-ups are part of the natural order of baseball. Because the team gets better by evaluating its future stars in real-game situations. Oh, and PS: an aging defensive liability with no range dunking meaningless September dingers may not be as conducive to winning as his replacement turning in stellar defensive plays behind young pitchers who need good defense behind them, such as happened last night. Clearly, "the best team" was on the field, since the boys shut out one of the best teams in baseball, while getting timely hitting (remember that?) against a 16-game winner.

So why don't you and your family go ahead and watch on MASN, genius.

Pretty much the best. post. ever.
I really want to tell Item 1 to Miggy right to his face.  While punching him for emphasis.

Too bad Miggy doesn't give a shit
What the Orioles front office recieves in return for him?

Dear My. Boyd
I saw an Orioles game this past Saturday, and who was more exciting -- Scott Moore or Tejada.  Moore.  And Tike Redman.  Trembley's right, if these overpaid veterans are going to whine and not produce, their asses are going to sit.

Good, we all agree, Miggy
You should play elsewhere next year. Now, if you'd return some of that cash to the organization for dogging it the last two years, we'd be even happier.

What's the Old Boy's Problem?
The team actually WON.  The pitchers threw a SHUTOUT.  How often does that happen?  When the moon is in the seventh house and Jupiter aligns with Mars, that's when.

And oh, yeah...
Can anyone disagree that Tejada needs to be traded.  He's still a great player, but he's also clearly not going to be part of the solution in that distant unknown dawn when the Orioles finally have a good team again.  We need to try to use him to bring in some guys who might BE part of the solution.

Until July....
I was the biggest Miggy defender you could find.

But his defense is ATROCIOUS, his batting has become selfish in the extreme, and his attitude is poison.

IF, and only if, we can get approximate value in return, he's gotta go. But I'm not giving him away. No siree....

I dunno
I've had a resurgent interest in Tejada since he started hitting balls out of the park again.  If we can lose him for a good package I'll be plenty happy, but I'd want to make sure we have some power bat in the lineup for next year given how shitty we've been slugging.

His comments are immaterial.  He's no brain surgeon and certainly no hero.  And he has turned into the Maytag Repairman on this sleepwalking franchise who "just works here".  Z makes a good point above though about him hurting his own cause by yapping, but this is nothing new.  Miggy can barely figure out his own feelings, much less how they'll affect others.

Another great passage from the article
They say they attend a good amount of games every season, using tickets through Tony Puleo's job. But the experience, with food, parking and high-priced beverages, can dent one's pocket, and not having the chance to see Tejada smash a ball over the left field wall can diminish it.

Haha what?  Is this from 2005?  When the fuck does Tejada ever smash a ball over the left field wall anymore?

Way to write an article with an agenda, Sun.  Where is the "excited team of young players bring enthusiasm to the club and win one against the first place Angels" article?

from boy wonder Brandon Fahey
"It was a blast," said Brandon Fahey, who replaced Roberts at second base and scored a run. "All the backup guys, we're all out there and we all played hard. It was a blast, maybe the most fun game of my life."

At least sinc Tejader
has produced so well in the second half, the O's can rest assured his power hasn't died. He could still pay big dividends via trade, and if not...well...at least they have the SS position filled.

I still think they should trade him this off-season. Do you guys want Julio Lugo? :P

I mean who blames him
He always tries his hardest on the field, there is no denying that.  People can say that he doesn't hustle to first sometimes but he is best power hitting shortstop in baseball period.  His defensive power has certainly declined but he is still an above average shortstop.  He is hitting .308 with 17 homers and 71 RBI's on one of the worst offenses in the ML.  He wants to win, he won in Oakland but didn't win it all.  Can any of you honestly sit here and say that the Orioles are going to contend in the near future? No.  They will definitly not win a world series in the next 4-6 years, more than likely more. Hell they won't even contend for the next 5 years.

by Baltimo on Sep 14, 2007 6:29 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

His defense is below average, I meant
But still not bottom of the league material.  If he toned it down he would commit less errors.

by Baltimo on Sep 14, 2007 6:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't blame him for wanting out...
...I blame him for shooting his mouth off to the press about it and pouting like a little boy after riding the bench for a night. And five years is an /eternity/ in baseball. Any team can contend within five years if the right moves are made. Trading Tejada would certainly be one of those moves.
