Dempsey's Army may "salute our newest lefty," but I do not. Apparently, Trembley and the rest of the organization see something in Burres. I see a guy who walks too many people and gets hit too much.

On the other side, it's Sean Henn. "Henn-credibly bad performance" is the only thing I'll ever think of when Sean Henn takes the hill.

The Orioles met Being Terrible in the winter of 1997. Having just split up with their fantastic fiancé, Davey Johnson, the Birds took the legendary advice of Earl Weaver and went out at night, hustlin' on the streets. They came home with Being Terrible, eloped, and even through instabilities (it seems like Being Terrible changes jobs every other year), they've stuck together.

Join me in celebrating the tenth anniversary of the awe-inspiring marriage of the Baltimore Orioles and Being Terrible. They're renewing their vows at 1:35 on MASN. It's an open bar.

(Note: Plenty of seating available. Many friends simply have other plans.)

Here are the National League scenarios. Go Rockies, go, go!

I really, really hope Joe Angel doesn't
get a couple drinks in him and speak his mind tonight too conscientiously -- which he might do even without the couple of drinks, actually -- and get himself Millered by Petey.

Actually
the Orioles didn't take Weaver's advice.  His advice was to get out of the bars and start hustling around the streets in order to get a....well, you know the rest.  The O's could have met a better guy on E. Baltimore Street between South & Gay Streets than this consummate loser they're with right now.

It's the Final...
...Countdown!!!

And frankly I have some mixed emotions.  I'm glad to be done with this sorry excuse of an Oriole team (assuming the FO is actually going to make major changes this offseason).  But I'm also always a little sad come the end of the baseball season.  I always get nostalgic, even moreso than on New Year's Eve.  There's just something about baseball that signals time passing for me.  Gets me a little verklempt.

"Trembley and the rest of the organization
see something in Burres. I see a guy who walks too many people and gets hit too much."

Your analysis runs too deep; let's get superficial here. Look at that picture and tell me you don't see either

(a) the one Oriole you'd want your daughter to go out with; or
(b) a face that's about to ask Mrs. Cleaver whether Wally and the Beav can come out and play some catch.

Or both. This guy's so apple pie square he comes from Oregon. Twice. No joke: Oregon City, Oregon. He makes Westie look like a juvenile delinquent. Wait a minute: Westie is a juvenile delinquent. Which is certainly more our fault than Burres's.

Anyway, plucked from obscurity and plunked into a starting role he wasn't prepared for, Burres has gamely plucked right back and plunked his way to a mediocre record on a team whose sub-mediocre sucktitude knows no bounds.

I, for one, am glad the FO said Pluck you, Burres. We got Petey's money's worth on him and then some.

But ask me again about the bottom of the third.

He met my daughter
at Brian's Baseball Bash last August (and I've got a lovely pic of the two of them), but the shy bug bit her when she saw his handsome self upclose and personal.  But you're right, I'd love for him to date her!!  And he's probably the only Oriole I could say that about, with the exception of Nick Markakis.

So, Brian, if you're reading this and are single give me a shout and I'll hook you two up!

A lesson in fan spirit from Oregon:
Re the Cal game in Eugene, from the AP story:

"Saturday's game also marked the return of Oregon's Duck mascot to Autzen Stadium. The Duck was suspended the last home game because he beat up the Houston Cougar in the season opener."

I dunno, maybe we could suit up Daniel in the Bird outfit or something...

Trebelhorn wasn't optimistic of getting a job offer from another team. "I don't suspect there will be a lot of openings. And I'm 60 years old," he said. "We'll see. I've got a beach house I want to buy in Oregon. I might ... just head up to Oregon and hit fungos to the sea gulls."

I would not be surprised
if it was Flannagan's. And MacPhail let him do it, knowing how bad it was. Just so he could show Petey A why Flanny had to go.

I hate when baseball season ends. That being said, I've watched hardly any of this game today, instead I watched the Phillies/Nats and Mets/Marlins. I'm so jealous of those Phillies fans.

Oooo I was just on TeeVee
I was at four of the six or so games that they showed as highlights of the season and they showed a shot of the fans after Erik got his record strikeout against the Twins.  Lucky me?

by Baltimo on Sep 30, 2007 5:07 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Honestly
Feel free to call me crazy, but outside of our bullpen situation, I feel okay about next year.  I'm looking forward to seeing Bedard, Guthrie, hopefully Loewen & Co. take it further.  I think Markakis is going to have a breakout year.  After seeing that Trax trade I can't wait to see what MacPhail can score for Tejada (Kemp?  Please?).  I have a decent feeling about Moore developing into an honest to god big league hitter.  Sure the bullpen's pretty scary,  but relievers are so inconsistent you never know what you might even have in-house next year.  Don't fret O's fans.  It seems like the era of delusion is finally over in the FO, and that has to be a good thing.

re:
Our only hope is that the era of bullshit delusion in the Warehouse is over. I'm waiting to hear what MacPhail does to the FO. My thoughts on next year are that this team is going to take many more lumps before it gets better. Or if it gets better. I won't mind the battering as much if they run out some young guys who might have a future instead of the tired sorry-ass retreads we've seen for a decade.

Let the off season purge begin!

Young vs old
Don't play it safe. The LAST thing we need is the 2008 crop of retread free agents like Aubrey Huff and Jay Payton this year. More on this in a diary later.

Just know this - we were ONE GAME WORSE this year over last year.

Alex Rodriguez was lifted for a pinch-runner and received a rousing ovation. Miguel Tejada just came out and received scattered applause from behind the dugout. Maybe a dozen people.

What should happen to Burres?
I was going to suggest moving him to a LOOGY role but lefties hit .871 OPS off of him.  The league has figured him as a starter.  Long man could maybe work for him.  In any case, I have a feeling he'll released within a year.
