Around SBN: MLB Trade Deadline: Phils, Astros complete Roy Oswalt deal

Do I hear 2 in a row? Gameday: O's at D-Rays, 09/05

Game time: 7:10pm | TV: MASN2; FSN (TB)
Radio: WHFS 105.7; WHNZ 1250 (TB)

Radhames Liz, RH Andy Sonnanstine, RH (0-1, 7.00) (4-9, 5.88)

Sorry so short, I'm in between softball pitching tutoring and swim practice for the 10 y.o. daughter and soccer practice for the 7 y.o. son (wife's got that one). Lineups at about 8 p.m. unless another admin adds them.

From the Yahoo! preview:

Radhames Liz (0-1, 7.00 ERA) makes his third major league start for Baltimore. The 24-year-old right-hander lasted only three innings Friday at Boston, yielding two runs, four hits and three walks in the Orioles' 9-8 victory.

Liz has struggled with high pitch counts in each of his first two starts, totaling 164 pitches in only nine innings.

Tampa Bay (57-82) lost for the third time in 12 games and had a season-high four-game home win streak snapped Tuesday.

Andy Sonnanstine (4-9, 5.88 ERA) looks to build on the best start of his rookie season. The right-hander limited the New York Yankees to one unearned run and two hits in a season-best eight innings Friday in a 9-1 road victory. He did not issue a walk, struck out five and did not allow a home run for the third start in a row.

Go O's.

I'm the last Orioles fan remaining.
I always knew it would happen. In fact, before a few weeks ago, I didn't realize there were actually other fans. I knew it couldn't last long. Someone just make sure Cal knows. He ought to know about me, I mean, aside from that restraining order.

Strength of Character...
Hey, I'm still here, too.  You never give up on your home team, no matter how lousy they are for how long, no matter how long since you moved away.  I haven't lived in Balt. since Brooks and Frank were still playing -- Palmer was still a kid.  Sure it would be easy to switch to the Dodgers or Angels, but those who would do such a thing are of weak will and questionable character.  When we are a country of people who will switch their baseball loyalties, our enemies will be able to sweep us aside with little effort.  So, are you listening Osama?  I AM STILL AN ORIOLE FAN AND SO ARE MANY OTHERS.  America is still strong.

I actually thought the Orioles had, like, a 1% chance of making a run for the wild card?  This was after the O's had just taken back-to-back series from the Red Sox/Yankees and looked good.

And now, here we are.  The Orioles are once again the laughingstock of baseball.  Just like they have been at this time of year for the past ten years.  And for some reason I thought this year might be different.  And here I am, in September, once again with my heart broken.

It Doesn't Matter
Anyone who thought this team was going to be at all good heading into this season was smoking crack. They were a bad team last year, and all they did this past offseason was to sign a few average relievers, Aubrey Huff, and Jay Payton. They were going to be a bad baseball team this year.

For the last month of the season, there is literally no purpose other than to evaluate the younger players. If Bedard is iffy, he shouldn't start again this year. If the younger players are all crap, that's fine, too. The only point, from Baltimore's perspective, to playing these games is to determine who might be useful in the future and who will not be useful. The worst thing that could have happened this season would have been if the Orioles had hung in there, clawed out 77 wins or so, and raised false hopes for next year. It would be a much preferable outcome to finish in fifth place, with the worst record in baseball, but do it playing younger guys. The Orioles need to firmly get themselves out of the mentality that it is acceptable to finish in fourth place every year with a bunch of mediocre veterans. That's been the problem for the last ten years.

Have the Orioles hit rock bottom? Not yet. They really need to, though. And hopefully this month, so MacPhail can go into the offseason and start trading away whoever he can for younger players. Which means that 2008 should be a rebuilding year. That's always been the problem with this team...all this losing, and they've never really rebuilt.

by crawjo on Sep 5, 2007 10:17 PM EDT reply actions

I totally disagree.
The Orioles are one or two key aging veterans away from being competitive.

From the AP article...
Two of the most depressing paragraphs I've read this season...
The Orioles have lost 13 of 15. Including the 30-3 loss on August 22 to Texas, Baltimore has allowed eight or more runs in 10 of its last 15 games. Five times the opponent scored 10 or more runs.

The Devil Rays' 17 runs was their most since they scored 19 on May 20, 2006, at the New York Yankees. Tampa Bay also had 22 hits, its most since pounding out a franchise-record 24 on June 24, 2004, at Toronto.
