Orioles Photo of the Day, 2008-01-24

Boog Powell, 19 years old, of the 1961 Rochester Red Wings.

Boog hit .321 with 32 homers and 92 RBI in 142 games for Rochester that year, and it was his last stop in the minors. He was called up to Baltimore late in the season, and didn't leave until 1975, at which point he had probably gained 100 pounds since the snapping of the above shot.

I freakin' wish Rochester were still our AAA
'cause my 'rents live here now and my niece's husband does the ball park/stadium catering for the area. I'd be looking at future O's and free hot dogs for life.

But oh no, Petey had to #$%& up this relationship too. What a total @##hole, y'know?

Forget it, Jake. It's Birdland.

yes, i know...
we ALL know!  do you think petey petes has stockpiles of pollonium wrapped up in pretty gift boxes for birdland dissidents?
So, I said, uh, lama: how about a little something for the effort?

Good ol' Boog
He was never really skinny, was he?

he was a big man
I don't know if it's entirely true or not, but Boog in photos always looks like he had exceptionally big forearms for the time.

Gone but not forgotten...

re:
The iconic picture of Boog has "Baltimore" scripted across his chest. I've never seen this pic, and the "Red Wings" looks just a little odd.

them were the days...
I remember Boog always fighting the weight.  Seemed like every other year he'd show up in the spring heavy, have a lousy year, then get serious about getting into shape the following year, show up in great shape and have a great year.

Also remember him insisting he was John not Boog the  first year or so.  Of course, that was the year or two when they had those clunky arch-conservative uniforms with the block lettering, and I think just a "B" on the cap, so it all fit.

Anyway, he was a great player on great teams.  Sigh.   We'll always have the barbeque, though.

big, bigger, biggest
"1975, at which point he had probably gained 100 pounds since the snapping of the above shot."

And he's probably gained another hundred or so since then. I met him a couple years ago and goddamn is he big.

My only autograph ever
was by Boog Powell, signed at Boog's BBQ on one of the rare occasions I buy food at OPACY.
