SEATTLE TIMES - Bedard to Seattle done*

Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times has stated that the deal is done. Adam Jones is being pulled from Venezuela to take a physical in Baltimore. No more word yet on who else is included but Baker expects a press announcement to be made on Tuesday. I'm thinking this was done earlier but Bavasi didn't want to announce it before/during the Mariner's fanfest which has been going on this weekend. Enjoy AJ you guys, he's a complete stud.

*UPDATES: (zk)

Rumors are a-swirlin'.

8:30pm MLB.com reports the deal is Bedard for "Jones, left-handed reliever George Sherrill and Minor League pitcher Chris Tillman, along with one more Minor League player."

9:33pm Macphail denies the deal to the Baltimore Sun, as Baltimo points out in the thread below.
"We do not have an agreement with the Mariners," MacPhail said."...MacPhail said Jones is not coming to Baltimore for a physical.

10:07pm A blogger at SBN's Lookout Landing speculates that Jones' physical might be in Bethesda, which would mean technically MacPhail isn't lying.

10:44pm Oy vey. SI.com says the Mariners have now denied the rumor:

There are signs the deal is getting closer -- such as Jones telling reporters that he's headed to Baltimore for a physical -- but late word Sunday night is there's still some internal debate in Baltimore over the deal. Club owner Peter Angelos is famous for nixing deals involving his best players. Mariners GM Bill Bavasi said by phone Sunday night that it was not a done deal. "We're not there yet,'' Bavasi said. "I can't tell you anything.'' I'm going to have a heart attack.

If this is true
its hard to think that its not,I couldn't imagine myself as thrilled as I am right now. We are getting a player who has every reason to be a great major leaguer. I would have it figured it would have been a little more bittersweet for me than what I am feeling right now. I was done with Bedard the minute I heard he was insulted the Orioles didn't try to extend him, even though we had tried to.

Amen.
Particularly because Jones sounds like he has a great attitude. Listen to this:
"(Bill Bavasi) called me yesterday and told me the news. I've got to go to Baltimore tomorrow morning and handle things there. I'm the centerpiece of the deal on the Mariners side. It's an honor to get traded for such a highly talented pitcher as Bedard is. He's one of the best. Last year he finished up as arguably one of the top candidates for the Cy Young. He's that good, so for me it's an honor. You know, I like Seattle, but if I am in Baltimore, as I think now I am, I'm going to embrace it and have the best time of my life in Major League Baseball."

And Charm City will embrace you right back, my friend.

Who else besides Jones?

Sherrill, Tillman, +one more....
...according to MLB.com:

The Mariners apparently would send Jones, left-handed reliever George Sherrill and Minor League pitcher Chris Tillman, along with one more Minor League player, to the rebuilding Orioles for Bedard.

SWEEEEEEET!!!
Jones & Markakis patrolling Camden Yards for the next 5+ years... I've got perma-grin!

Wonder who else is coming back?  Interesting that Sherrill hasn't been notified, given that the reported deal was Jones, Sherrill, Tillman.  Perhaps we got Clement instead?

BTW, Brian Roberts... you should probably pack a suitcase.

I've heard rumors
and that's all they are, that the Baltimore FO got another prospect instead of Sherrill. Don't hang your hat on that, but I think you guys would have won the deal with just Jones.

I'll say it...
"Clement".  Which, for our offensively-challenged club, is frickin' huge.

Sherrill
good, we have no use for a 30 year old reliever.  I dont think Clement, but its possible.  I personally want him well over Tillman, I just dont trust those 19 year old arms. Also i think Morrow is overvalued by Seattle.

finally
as i stated three weeks ago, Jones and a bucket of balls and i'm happy with this deal.  everything else is gravy.

Relevant portions of the post...
"I just spoke to Mariners spokesman Tim Hevley, who confirmed Jones has been called back to the U.S. Hevley said he could not comment further, which more or less tells more or less tells us Jones is being traded because major league clubs do not stiff winter league teams as badly as Seattle just did without a darned good reason. If Jones was hurt, the M's would say so. Anyway, Jones himself is saying what the M's won't. The winter league team's manager, none other than Luis Sojo, has also confirmed Jones if off to Baltimore for a physical."

woohoo!
I'll miss watching Bedard pitch, but I'm glad the O's got such a good young player (players?) for him.  Good luck and godspeed, Erik.

Bye Erik...
But I wanna know who else we got out of this...Adam Jones is dandy and all but another prospect would be a delicious addition.

re:
Lord knows what can happen between now and whenever this is supposed to be announced.

I think it was the Churchill rumor/article that had this deal hung up on the O's wanting  Triunfel or Morrow along with Jones. It will be good to see either of these guys is headed east. Someone has to play SS and likewise, someone has to pitch. I seriously doubt it is one of these two.

So, who's going to pitch for the O's? The rotation looks ridiculously weak now. I guess you can say my excitement is tempered a bit by watching good pitching leave.

Freddie Bynum????
I think it is better that we get Jones, who is a young beast, rather than keep around Erik who will be solid for another year or two on a losing team then sink into mediocrity like the entire franchise.

re:
If the pitching doesn't shape up it won't really matter if Jones roams the OF. The rotation is in rough shape and the O's are hoping for a number of prospects to pan out.

I realize Bedard wasn't going to sign and had to go. But watching good pitching walk out the door is a bit of a downer.

See my post below
But if MacPhail can get rid of Roberts and we get some real solid pitching in return we are looking good, but if Liz is our future I dunno...

dude, seriously
I like Bedard, too, and I hate that the circumstances dictate that he HAS TO BE TRADED, but is this team winning, I dunno, 60 games going to be so much different than the annual 68-72? This is all a big step up on signing Jay Payton and Aubrey Huff and calling it an offseason.

Not the same thing as
saying there's no agreement in the works. No one said that this deal was completed officially, so it should hardly be surprising when the FO says "it is not completed."

Yeah
Usually a GM won't admit a deal until it is done.

Hot damn
We will have picked up Adam Jones, Troy Patton, Luke Scott, Matt Albers, Michael Costanzo, Dennis Sarfate, possibly Clement, possibly Tillman, possibly Triunfel?  And we gave up Miguel Tejada a day before everything went spiraling downhill for him and Erik Bedard who, although he worked wonders this season, really has not proven himself and is on the older side and I don't see him being real good past the next 2 years.

If MacPhail can get Roberts dealt to possibly Chicago and we get good pitching prospects from it, maybe including Kerry Wood, this will be a completely successful offseason for the O's.  If only he could get rid of Millar, Payton, and Huff.  If he doesn't get the Roberts deal done though our pitching staff is looking real, real shaky.

Kerry Wood?
A Chicago deal would have to involve Gallagher.  I'm not sure who else though.  If Wood is a throw in, cool, if not, don't waste Roberts' value on him.

Sherrill seems pumped
"I have not heard a thing," he said, "but am preparing myself for the worst." Comforting.

Sherrill has been notified
that he must take a physical for the trade, per ESPN.  Perhaps his attitude will improve today when he realizes that speaking to Seattle's press doesn't mean that only Seattle can hear him.

re:
Maybe he doesn't want to go from a team that has the (ill-fated, I believe) opinion that they can win this year to a team that is all but blatantly saying in a real loud voice, "Hey, we're going to suck this year."

Adam Jones is a young guy that would be part of the centerpiece of the rebuilding effort in Baltimore. Sherrill is a 31-year old LOOGy that's worked his ass off to be as good as he is, and nobody in his position would be thrilled to be a piece of this trade on his side. He's not going to go out there and tank games or anything.

Bedard
If the deal is for Jones/Clement/Tillman/?, cool beans.  If the deal is for Jones/Sherrill/ Tillman, then that's a weak package, particularly in comparison to the first mentioned package.  Sherrill is a great reliever but we need position players.

What would be the point of having the physical
in Bethesda. That doesn't change anything. Does that guy know that Bethesda's almost an hour's drive from Baltimore.

OH MY GOD JUST DO THE DEAL!!
This thing needs to get done. I've got to head to bed in  a moment, and for the love of God, when I wake up in the morning, I want to read that this trade is done.

update
Here's a link to an update

George Sherrill is a reliever.  Seriously, why waste Bedard's value on him.  I don't know much about Tony Butler and Kameron Mickolio and I'm not bothering to learn more about them until the deal is official.

by birdman on Jan 28, 2008 12:38 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

just cause it was right there:

Kameron Mickolio     RHR     AAA/22     2008     Could see bigs in September- touching mid-90s with four-seamer..

Tony Butler     LHS     A/19     2010     Shoulder problems are scary. Tough customer when healthy.

I'm all for getting pitching back, but damn, Truinfel/Clement would have been nice...
