MacPhail: "Other clubs" in talks for Bedard

From Jeff Zrebiec at the Sun:

"We continue to talk," MacPhail said when asked about the proposed deal that would send Bedard to Seattle for a package that includes center fielder Adam Jones, reliever George Sherrill and pitching prospect Chris Tillman. "We've had some other clubs chime in as well."

MacPhail didn't mention anything specific, but Zrebiec addressed the other teams that were, at one point, seriously floating in Bedard talks. The Reds don't want to give up Jay Bruce, so they dropped out. The Dodgers signed Hiroki Kuroda, and they dropped out. The Mets just traded for Johan freaking Santana, and that takes them out.

Who else is there? We've heard nothing serious about other teams, but I like to speculate because I'm a blogger and not a serious journalist.

How about the Yankees or Red Sox? It's unlikely that Angelos will trade within the division, like it really matters, but these two teams were at one point very interested in Santana. With him now off the market and out of the American League, the perennial AL contenders in the Bronx and Boston could be interested in strengthening their positions. Both have the talent to move, but you can argue that neither need to give up their future to make anything happen.

Other than that, nobody springs to mind, and even those two teams are entirely questionable. Texas? The insane White Sox? Philadelphia, hoping to keep pace with the Mets?

Maybe MacPhail is just throwing this out there to try to force Seattle's hand a little. Who knows?

I know some of you are tired of hearing about this, but I'm having fun with it. It's not every offseason you trade your biggest star and your ace.

Personally
I think MacPhail is doing this in light of the Twins not getting back too much for Santana and rumors have been floating around that this means the O's should get even less for Bedard, which I think is bullshit.  I think if we involved the Yankees and the Sox we would just further complicate things as both clubs just tried to prevent the other from getting Johan a few months ago, which would be depressing if the same happens with Bedard.  The Tillman + Jones + Sherril + whoever else is good enough for me although if the Phillies want to gut their system out we could see what they have to offer.  But in the end, Angelos will mess things up again and won't trade Bedard who gets injured openining day and goes on the DL for the entire year.

Philly
I really think MacPhail should see what they might offer. I mean maybe they aren't interested at all, but you might be able to sell them on needing Bedard with New York getting Santana.

Throw in Mora, too!
Doesn't Philly need a 3B or something?  Toss Mora in to sweeten the deal.  Then he'd finally be playing for a playoff team, just like he did with the Mets.

RE:
They signed Pedro Feliz on Monday.

By the way
That deal makes very little sense to me.  Two years of Pedro Feliz!  What?  Really?  They're basically the same person.  Mora hit .274 to Feliz's .253.  More steals and better OBP for Mora in a shorter time frame (467 ABs), same slugging, twenty more RBIs for Feliz, but everything else suggests that they're about equal.  Feliz is three years younger, but, really?

by Dr Orpheus on Jan 30, 2008 5:28 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

well...
feliz is a considerably better defender (i believe feliz had a negative vorp while mora was sub 10, but they're about equal in warp3), but that doesn't matter unless you have pitchers that can keep it in the yard!

remember when gillick publicly pooh-poohed the notion of acquiring melmo?  there are few 3rd basemen that fall below melvin in my personal pecking order, but happy pete is one of them, for sure.

what's up now, old man?!

So, I said, uh, lama: how about a little something for the effort?

RE:
They signed him for half the price as Mora.  I think the Phils were just looking for a cheap upgrade from Wes Helms, which really isn't that hard to do.

RE:
I'm sure they would be interested; it's just that their minor league system is pretty barren.

I don't give a shit if he goes to NY or Boston.
Well maybe Boston because this city is filled with inbred assholes.

We're not going to compete for a few years, and we sure could use some good, young talent.

RE:
Exactly.  Sure it sucks to have to face Bedard 4 times a year; but if we want to compete in 3 or 4 years wouldn't it kind of help our cause if we took a nick out of their farm system?

Agreed
Sure we face Bedard and get raped 3-4 times a year, but in time they are going to face their own prospects and at the same time not have to depth that they would have.

You just have to be sure you know what you are doing.

I know we've all heard this before...
...but MLB.com is reporting that the deal isn't dead and could be imminent:

the deal hasn't gone anywhere
these things just take time.  if Jones had kept his mouth shut to the Venezuelan press (WTF?!?) we wouldn't be so damn antsy around here.

this thing is going down before the end of the week, or i'll eat my hat-currently that of the Spokane Indians.

Adam Jones is the best player made available via trade to the O's this off-season.  he's better than anyone not named Phil Hughes or Jay Bruce mentioned in ANY of the trade talks this off-season.  to come back with him woul dbe a major coup, regardless of what comes back with him.  the other pieces will detail just how big the O's win the trade.  and if TIllman is one of those pieces, then it's a pretty big haul indeed.

you just don't trade for an organ-eye-zation's minor league hitter and pitcher of the year in the same trade that often.
