Millar Guarantees Orioles in World Series

Heh. Having him on the team will at least be fun this year.

Per The Sun:

"I'm guaranteeing a 2008 World Series. Everybody else is," Millar said while standing at this locker before today's first full-squad workout.

"I'm going on the record right now. We're going to shock the world. I don't know who Dempster is in Chicago, but if he thinks he's going to win the World Series, he has to come through us first."

Hey. It could happen. You know, a lot of the other teams would have to be consumed in a fireball, but it could happen.

Does anybody else...
...just wish Kevin Millar would go the hell away? Maybe go get work as a clubbie up in Boston? I really can't stand his loser/dirtbag/leader/"hey, we're good too" mentality.

If only he wasn't likely to have one of the top 3 OBPs on the team. Sigh.

While
I agree that it'd be great to get rid of Millar and fill his spot with another young guy that needs experience, but I don't really have any contempt for him.

He's a solid guy and as zknower mentioned it'll at least be fun if not amusing to have him on the team.

Shoot... if he does play his "leader" role right he might actually help our younger hitters more than freakin' Crowley.

I agree with KenDixon
I know the baseball season is a long grind, and every team needs a jokester to get them through bad stretches. But I think Millar tries too hard to be a clown. I loved him when he did the Ray-Ray dance last year, but his act has grown old. Going up to Pink Hat town after the season to hang with his old pals didn't help matters. It just made him look like that sad former high school star coming back every year to relive the glory vicariously.

Also, what exactly can he teach our hitters? How to pull the ball and hit .260? He's not exactly Tony Gwynn in terms of being a student of hitting.

by Cockeysville Crony on Feb 20, 2008 1:25 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

And who is Tony Gwynn?
The answer is nobody on the Orioles, so maybe he can show young hitters that you don't have to hit knee high sliders the opposite way to be a great hitter, you can just be really selective at the plate and make the pitcher throw fastballs. Sort of the anti-Terry Crowley.
I would much rather have a guy who tries too hard to be the lighthearted teammate, than a guy whose just gloomy all season because he has to play on a rebuilding ballclub. What he did during last year's World Series was absolutely indefensible, though.

RE:
My annoyance with Millar is pretty much limited to when he officially became the Red Sox mascot last October and threw out the first pitch.  Other than that, I don't have much of a problem with him.

i hate Millar...
and join in with KDFC about wishing he would go away, but that was pretty funny.

"i don't know who Dempster is in Chicago..."

Classic.

I came to Camden Yards to watch the O's and all I got was this lousy "Fenway South" t-shirt.

Millar
is good for the Orioles because they need a clown to cheer them up while they lose 100+ games.

re
If that's the case maybe I could rent Millar some time in July to cheer me up.  It's gonna be a looong year.

Ooh
I'd love it if Millar was available for parties! Actually, he probably would be if he thought of it.

are we sure he's not already?
I mean, has anyone talked to his agent?

Nice beard
I thought I heard a rumor that facial hair was banned on the Orioles. Did I hear wrong, or is Kevbo breaking the rules?

It's not allowed
It's a stupid rule, and thankfully it doesn't seem to apply in spring training.  A lot of guys came to ST w/ facial hair last year too.

Its a very stupid rule
Anything that makes us more like the Yankees is bad.  Peter Angleos has a Steinbrenner complex that needs to be discouraged.

I notice....
...that he has kept a wee snub of a goatee (aka a teeny pb). Does this comport with the facial hair policy?

The man is such a rebel.

RE:
He better shave it; lax enforcement of the facial hair policy has been the main problem with the Orioles the last decade.

eh
B-Rob got away with the flavor savor look for most of 2005. Then again, the way he was hitting in 2005, they probably would have let him grow a ZZ Top beard.
