Payton to Chicago with Roberts?

OK, so two disclaimers: Heyman is frequently full of shit and this is pretty thin on details.  Nonetheless, here goes:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/baseball/mlb/specials/spring_training/2008/03/03/heyman.robert s/index.html

According to Heyman, Payton may be accompanying Roberts to Chicago, which is great.  Redman is just about as good for a fourth outfielder, and way the hell cheaper.  I thought Chicago already had four outfielders, but hey, not our problem.  Hopefully this happens and nets us a whole slew of prospects... even though I will miss B-Rob.  Also, I would love to see us pull Sean Hill if adding Payton makes that viable.

Update [2008-3-4 5:57:7 by punkrawka]: Sean Hill is not a person. I meant Rich Hill.

Good God...
...they'll take Payton OFF our hands? And this will somehow net an extra player?

What are the chances we can get Cedeno AND Eric Patterson? Neither are ever gonna be special players...but I'd rather see them in the MI than Hernandez/Fahey.

This is a title
Who is Sean Hill?  Rich Hill?  Not going to happen.

I'm really excited at the prospect of shipping them off together.  Although, mlbtraderumors.com is suggesting that the Cubs may send Marquis over in the same deal...which I'm not too hot about.  However, it could be a good deal if none of the options for fifth starter pan out.  Plug Marquis in until some team's rotation struggles or is riddled with injuries and trade he and Trachsel for prospects.

Lastly, Cedeno is not a better option then Hernendez.  He's a butcher at short and second and the outfield.  The guy can't field and he doesn't hit.  His average will probably be around .230 in the AL East with a low OBP, and you'll get roughly the same output from Hernendez with a much better glove.  Not to mention the stress pitchers must be under knowing that any ball hit to short is a risk for a blunder by Cedeno.

I've heard good things about Patterson, however.  He might be a good option at second with Hernendez at short.

Cedeno's AAA numbers
warrant a second glance from somebody. Dunno anything about his fielding, though.

by KenDixonFanClub on Mar 3, 2008 5:01 PM EST up reply actions

Oi
His Triple-A numbers are quite good, I'll agree.  But he can't hit in the majors.  Three seasons.  He's had three seasons to prove that he's not worthless and he's provided nothing but being below average in every statistical measure.  They're trying him out in center field this spring just to see if his value will increase.  He's Corey Patterson without the great glove.

Why is it that folks are bashing Cabrera for not putting it together but are suggesting the Os trade for Cedeno who is the same kind of underachieving player as Cabrera?  Do we want two guys who can't figure it out?

by Dr Orpheus on Mar 3, 2008 6:59 PM EST up reply actions

Cedeno
I am not up on Cedeno at all, but I can't help but look at the AAA numbers and like what I see.  Plus, he's only going to be 25 this year.  his only full year in the majors he was 23.  He was shoved into the shortstop role and batted in front of the pitcher.  He would be an upgrade with the bat at short, but he would be a downgrade with the glove.  .953 fielding percentage at short which is 14 points below Luis Hernandez.

So, do we want the offense or the defense?  I'd say stick with Luis Hernandez.

Dreams and hopes
Rich Hill is a pretty fantastic talent.  He's a two with a lot of potential for more.  But, yeah, he would be fantastic in Baltimore after doing well last year at Wrigley.

Personally, I think keeping Hernendez at short and having Cedeno at second wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.  You want to have a good glove at short.  Second is important, but short is a necessity.  I'm still up for Eric Patterson or trading for a veteran.  Heck, package some dudes up and send them to Colorado for whomever doesn't get the second base spot.  They have a race out there with Jayson Nix, Marcus Giles, Jeff Baker, Clint Barmes, and Omar Quintanilla.  Barmes would be nice, Nix would be better, and the name Quintanilla is just fantastic sounding.  Try saying it.  Quintanilla.  BAM!

by Dr Orpheus on Mar 3, 2008 10:24 PM EST up reply actions

Barmes would be nice?
Barmes is God awful bad. He has no business in the majors.

Yeah, Rich Hill
And no, it won't happen.  But a guy can dream.

b/c
in addition to not putting it together in the majors, cabs nver put it together in the minors and never even had a sniff of aaa (really), so there's reason to give a little more credit to cedeno's performance.
So, I said, uh, lama: how about a little something for the effort?

re:
Cabrera sucked in the minors, too. Cabrera ever being more than a project is nothing more than a fabrication.

Shawn Hill...
is a pitcher for the Nationals.
I came to Camden Yards to watch the O's and all I got was this lousy "Fenway South" t-shirt.

Why they'd take Payton
Cubs are looking for a righty fifth outfielder who could play CF instead of Pie facing a tough lefty. It'd only be 40ish starts, and I'm not sure if Payton would be thrilled for that role. Or if he can play CF much.

wake me up when the trade is done
I'm done with following Roberts rumors.

Agreed
I'm pretty skeptical of this one. it is coming from Jon Heyman after all.

perhaps no this deal, but it's been all over the interwebs this past week that Cubs scouts were at the O's games and vice-versa.

MelMo happy again!!

Roberts
I wouldn't be surprised if Roberts is traded soon.  That's not way I'm not following the Roberts rumors.  I'm not following them because I don't put much trust in rumors.  Roberts has been on the verge of being traded forever now.

Last I heard it was still players from the group of Murton, Gallagher, Cedeno, and Marshall.  I kind of like Murton but is he much of an upgrade over Luke Scott?

I think if we include Payton...
...the Cubs will include either Marquis or Ryno.  And I think I'd rather have Ryno.

I'm so fucking tired of these rumors though.  Either make the trade or don't.  And if Roberts is considered for a trade in July, I hope there are teams with middle infield prospects.

Cool!  I always wanted to see Sandberg (and Dale Murphy) in an O's uniform.

John Parrish for Scott Moore and Rocky Cherry
Pretty good return for John Parrish, I'd say....

Who'd we get for Hairston?  Was that Sosa?

Rich Hill
Would be a fantastic addition to the O's rotation.  I'm not too high on Ronny Cedeno or Eric Patterson, but something like Rich Hill and Carlos Marmol would be a huge upgrade and youth infusion to the pitching staff.

Matt Murton
is a good player too, but he wouldn't get a ton of PT with Markakis and Luke Scott at the corners.  I guess he could platoon with Scott, but the team might be better off going with two guys who'd have regular spots on the team (e.g., SP and RP).

re:murton
I'm all about the O's getting Murton. Luke Scott is 29 years old if he was going to be the man he'd already BE the man. An OF of Nicky, Jones & Murton sounds fine to me. Then at the trade deadline unload Scott for a prospect or two and go about your day.

by BENNYBIRDMAN on Mar 4, 2008 10:53 AM EST up reply actions

Hill and Marmol would be great, but...
It just isn't going to happen. Why would the Cubs suddenly part with two of their best pitchers when up until now they're talking spare parts?

I'm torn on Murton. Both Murton and Scott are at a place in their careers where they need a shot at playing every day. I guess I'd prefer Murton over Scott, but he's not that much younger and doesn't have much more upside.

I'd rather add another younger player to the deal. Someone on the other side of 25.

If we deal Roberts...
I'll guess we add a player to this list:

http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/the-ten-worst-leadoff-hitters-since-1957/

We still don't know who will bat leadoff if this goes down.

Cedeno/Patterson? Better suited for the bottom of the order. Oops...Luis is there.

Mora? He still gets on base reasonably well (for this team) and, I bet you didn't know this about him--he can lay down a bunt.

Millar has the OBP but Trembley would never dream of it.

How about someone who hasn't been mentioned much: Nick. He can get on base. He's shown that he can steal a base, something Trembley cares about. He's definitely not the ideal choice, but who is?

re:
Said it before, I'll say it again. If we don't get a 2B in return for any Roberts trade, then I guarantee Fahey leads off. He's skinny, white, has a good attitude and plays second base. I'll Old Fart my ideas up for you and you'll see what I mean:

Mora: HE'S A VET'RAN. HE HITS SECOND 'CAUSE HE LIKESTA. HE EARNED THAT. HE HAS BEEN TO THE PLAYOFFS!

Millar: WHAT! HE'S FAT. AND SUSPICIOUSLY WISHES TO HAVE A BEARD, POTENTIALLY SPREADING DYSENTERY AMONGST THE RANKS!

Markakis: WHY THAT'D HURT HIS ARE BEE EYES.

Hernandez: THAT YOUNGSTER IS A GLOVESMAN, NOT A BATSMAN!

Fahey: I LIKE HIS ATTITUDE. HE GOES TO GET'EM. HE'S A GO-GETTER. HE PLAYS SECOND BASE. HE IS OBVIOUSLY A FINE HUMAN BEING, BECAUSE HE SURE SUCKS AT BASEBALL. BUT GOSH FART IT ALL HE TRIES HARD. HE'LL BUNT THE RUNNERS OVER IF WE'RE IN A TIGHT SPOT!

(What runners?)

SHET IT!
