Fantasy Football Week One Things To Watch

While the technical kick-off the the 2008 NFL season began on Thursday, the de facto start begins in a couple hours.  There are plenty of things everyone will be watching.   This is what I'll be watching in addition to hoping for Week One validation of all my draft picks.

2009 Fantasy Baseball Rankings: Starting Pitchers

Yesterday, I did a quick Top 10 for the 2009 fantasy baseball season. At #9 and #10 was Carlos Quentin and Ian kinsler. Those spots could have been easily occupied by Ryan Braun and Josh Hamilton. Or by a starting pitcher.

My question is which one. Do you take a veteran ace like Johan Santana? Or a new veteran ace like C.C. Sabathia? Or an fresh ace like Tim Lincecum.

Here are the three pitchers relevent fantasy stats.

PitcherTM2009 AgeIPKERAWHIP
Johan Santana NYM 30 196 169 2.71 1.15
C.C. Sabathia TBD 29 210.1 208 2.82 1.13
Tim Lincecum SF 25 190.1 216 2.60 1.19

Poll
Who would you select first?
  • Johan Santana, New York Mets
  • C.C. Sabathia, Team To Be Determined
  • Tim Lincecum, San Francisco Giants

Washington Redskins at New York Giants: Who To Start?

With another 15 games to come this weekend and Monday night, who gets the valuable starting slots on fantasy rosters is one of many decisions fantasy footballers will be making.  Between the two teams, the only obvious start is Redskins' RB Clinton Portis.  After him, the next easiest are two New York Giants - RB Brandon Jacobs and WR Plaxico Burress.

After those three is anyone's guess.  Do you start QB Eli Manning?  WR Santana Moss?  Is there really anyone one else who can even be considered?

Poll
Are you starting either QB Eli Manning or WR Santana Moss tonight?
  • No
  • Yes, Manning
  • Yes, Moss
  • Both. Is that bad?

Minnesota Vikings: Best Fantasy Player and Biggest Fantasy Sleeper

Gonzo of the Daily Norsemen, the SBNation's Minnesota Vikings blog, brings some fantasy tips:

I apologize for not getting this post in at the same time as the rest of their NFC North brethren got theirs in over here at Fake Teams.  My wife and I live down on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, so you can just about imagine how hectic the past few days have been for us.  However, the old adage is "better late than never," and so here's my take on the best fantasy player and the biggest fantasy sleeper for the 2008 Minnesota Vikings.

2009 Fantasy Baseball Rankings: Top 10

With the NFL, and fantasy football, kicking-off tonight, there is no better time to begin looking forward to the 2009 fantasy baseball season.   The first thing I do is look at the data from the current season.  Whose hitting HRs?  Stealing bases?  Hitting for AVG?  Striking out batters?

By getting a general sense of who is producing, I can begin to form some preliminary analysis of who the top players are going to be in the 2009 fantasy baseball drafts.  And I am not excited.

This season looks to have collapsed in terms of power.  With just Ryan Howard of Philadelphia as the only "sure" thing for 40 HRs and a couple others fewer than six from the mark (Whie Sox OF Carlos Quentin and the Diamondbacks' Adam Dunn at 36 and 35 respectively), there isn't the clear cut delineation of production needed to easily rank the top players.

Does this mean position scarcity takes a more prominent role?  Maybe.  Here is a Top 10 that does include scarcity more than one would normally see.
