Geronimo Gil has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a with a right thumb injury. With Javy Lopez still out and not even yet beginning a minor league rehab assignment, this puts Sal Fasano in total control of the starting catching duties, with Eli Whiteside up from Ottawa to assume the backup position.
Whiteside is a 25-year old rookie, but can he really be any worse than Gil? It is unlikely. I mean, Sal Fasano was a lot better.
This is pretty irrelevant to the team's success, yes. Gil is no one's personal catcher and is a backup to the bone that lives on his arm. Nice guy and all!
