Quick updates

The Red Sox/JD Drew deal is still on, and they're getting close to finalizing it.

Trot Nixon will be with Cleveland next year for $3 million.

Royals owner David Glass says his team will contend in 2007. In that division. That's bold.

David Wells and the Padres agreed to a one-year, $3 million contract.

Notre Dame wide receiver/pitcher Jeff Samardzija is giving up football and has agreed to a five-year, $10 million deal with the Cubs. Samardzija was projected as a first-round pick in the NFL draft, but if you ask yours truly as a person who watches Notre Dame choke in every game they play against a team that's any good, Samardzija probably made the wise choice.

The Twins made an offer to Ramon Ortiz.

Julian Tavarez will be in the mix as potential closer for the Red Sox.

Doug Davis avoided arbitration with the Diamondbacks and signed a three-year deal. If Davis gets back to his 2004-05 form, he'll be a nice complement for Brandon Webb. And if Johnson and Livan Hernandez don't suck, who knows?
