The Orioles claimed 27-year old righty Jeremy Guthrie off waivers from the Indians. It's unlikely that Guthrie will ever be a factor in the major leagues, because he's had some wild control issues in his brief stints in the bigs. His minor league numbers are rather crap, too: 4.40 ERA, 1.40 WHIP over about 570 innings. He's an arm, though, and going into the spring you can never have enough of those in camp.
Bruce Chen may be signed by the Twins. Honestly, of all the Oriole failures, Chen's 2006 was one of the most disappointing. He was just so solid in '05. But I hope Chen turns it around somewhere. The Twins look at Bruce as another lefty out of the pen to support Dennys Reyes. I couldn't wish Bruce Chen any better than I do.
In other news, the Blue Jays signed Victor Zambrano to a minor league deal. Zambrano will almost certainly always be best remembered as the bum that the Mets had to have, and gave up Scott Kazmir to get. Also, the brief Todd Helton-to-Boston rumor is dead. The rumored deal was Mike Lowell, Julian Tavarez and pitching prospects for Helton. Roger Clemens is still "undecided" about playing in 2007. The Yankees are communists.
