The excitement of major league debuts and young star pitchers disappears for a day as the lone veteran in the Orioles rotation takes the mound tonight. Jeremy Guthrie's troubles in 2009 are well documented on these webpages, but I still find myself with hope that each start will be like Guts of old. His past two starts have been against the Red Sox and not pretty. Hopefully the less potent Tigers offense will be easier for him to handle.
Facing off against Guthrie is Edwin Jackson. Jackson dominated the Orioles earlier this year with 8 innings of 2 hit ball. He's having an amazing year with an ERA of just 2.64 and WHIP of 1.15.
It's going to be tough for the O's to take this game with Captain Longball on the mound vs. the starter with the 2nd best ERA in the AL, but after last night's game I'm actually feeling a bit optimistic. Am I crazy? It's likely, yes.
