Welcome back....COREY PATTERSON?

Will we be seeing this at Camden Yards in 2010?
Will we be seeing this at Camden Yards in 2010?

According to Roch Kubatko, the Orioles have signed Corey Patterson to a minor league contract to fill the spot left in Norfolk by Lou Montanez's promotion. Corey has had a tough road since leaving the Orioles after the 2007 season, spending almost as much time in the minors as the majors and finding himself in 2010. He was signed by the Mariners to a minor league deal in Spring Training, but opted out after he didn't make the team.

Just to recap, the Orioles started the 2010 season with an outfield envied by many. Nick Markakis, Adam Jones, Nolan Reimold, and Felix Pie. Now, Markakis and Jones are having a disappointing start to the season (Adam especially), Pie is out for three months, and Nolan can't play outfield due to his bum Achilles, leaving Lou Montanez to get starts in left.

Corey's stats while with the O's:

Year Age Tm Lg G PA AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB CS BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS OPS+ SH
2006 26 BAL AL 135 498 463 75 128 19 5 16 53 45 9 21 94 .276 .314 .443 .757 94 8
2007 27 BAL AL 132 503 461 65 124 26 2 8 45 37 9 21 65 .269 .304 .386 .690 80 13
Since leaving the Orioles, Corey has spent time with the Nationals, Reds, and Brewers, and his numbers keep getting worse. From 2008-2009 he played in 151 games and accumulated an impressively bad batting line of .197/.228/.327. Most of those games were in 2008 as he spent 113 games in AAA in 2009, hitting .331/.366/.597 with 12 HR and 28 2B.

I didn't dislike Corey Patterson when he was an Oriole, but I wasn't sad to see him go either. I have to say that I'm happy to deal with Lou Montanez until Felix is back and Nolan is feeling better, but it is a little bit reassuring to have someone in the minors who can legitimately play center field for the Orioles should something happen to Adam Jones, because Lou Montanez wouldn't cut it out there for more than a spot start.
