Who's hot and who's not for the Baltimore Orioles:
Rotation | ||
Jake Arrieta | Made his first career Opening Day start and did not remotely disappoint. Tossed 7 shut-out innings with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts. Could it be the poor control of the past had something to do with a golf ball-sized bone spur in his elbow? |
Wei-Yin Chen | DNP. Will get his first start on Tuesday night vs. the Yankees. |
Jason Hammel | Took a no-no bid into the 8th. That'll do for his first start in Baltimore. Almost makes you forget Jeremy Guthrie used to pitch here.....(okay, not really, but you get the drift). |
Tommy Hunter | Didn't miss many bats (just 3Ks over 7 innings), but got the job done. Allowed 2 runs on 6 hits. |
Brian Matusz | DNP. Will get his first start tonight vs. the Yankees. |
Bullpen | ||
Luis Ayala | Three up, three down. |
Kevin Gregg | DNP. Can't complain about that. |
Jim Johnson | Two for two on save opportunities over the opening weekend. |
Matt Lindstrom | Part two of the Jeremy Guthrie trade has a power arm, but doesn't seem to know exactly where the ball's going. Pitched one scoreless inning, but really needs to work on that control. |
Darren O'Day | DNP |
Troy Patton | Lone lefty in the pen left an ill-advised change up right over the plate for Josh Willingham to deposit in the left field seats. Also walked the first batter he faced. Hopefully this is just nerves from making his first Opening Day roster since he pitched fairly well last season. |
Pedro Strop | One scoreless inning. |
Lineup | ||
Robert Andino | Starting at 2B with Brian Roberts on the shelf. 3 for 9 to start the season, including 2 RBI. |
Wilson Betemit | His RBI double on Sunday capped the game in the Orioles favor. |
Endy Chavez | Got the start in LF (and hit lead off) in Sunday's game. Just the "rest the regulars on Sunday" lineup or is this the start of a LF platoon between Chavez and Nolan? |
Chris Davis | Didn't hit much (1 for 6), but made a huge play at first base on Opening Day that possibly saved the game. |
Ryan Flaherty | Lone appearance was a PR opportunity. |
J.J. Hardy | Rather nice Opening Day at the plate. Added a solo home run in the first inning on Sunday. |
Nick Johnson | Got two starts (one at first and one at DH), but failed to record a hit. |
Adam Jones | 4 for 12 to start the season, including a double and a home run. |
Nick Markakis | On fire to begin the season, going 5 for 9 with 2 home runs, a triple, and 3 walks. Should put to bed any concerns about his offseason abdominal surgery, at least as far as his hitting is concerned. Also, his OPS is over 2.000. Awesome. |
Ronny Paulino | 4 for 4 in his lone appearance (at DH no less....) |
Nolan Reimold | Needs to hit in order to avoid a platoon situation with Endy Chavez. |
Mark Reynolds | Not only did he go 0-6 with 2Ks, his defense left something significant to be desired. Astronaut Mike Dexter posted a solid article about that this morning. Picking up right where he left off last season, it would seem. |
Matt Wieters | Did have a home run, but went just 1-9 in the opening series. |
Notables on the DL: Zach Britton (SP), Brian Roberts (2B), Taylor Teagarden (C), Tsuyoshi Wada (RP)
