Tuesday Bird Droppings

Playoffs continue to excite. Some choice minor leaguers resume play in Arizona. It's Noble Prize season. And Fall finally arrives on the East Coast. All that and more in today's fun-filled and action-packed Bird Droppings!

Rise and shine, Chatters. How many of us stayed up past the witching hour (at least for the Eastern and Central time zones) and watched the finish of the Braves-Dodgers series? Exciting stuff. And further proof that sacrifice bunting is pretty dumb and useless. Also, when you have an Ace (such as Clayton Kershaw) don't be afraid to pitch him often. 3 days rest? Hell yeah. He could probably come back on two days rest and dominate. And now Kershaw is set to go on regular rest in games 2 & (if needed) 5 of the NLCS while also being available for a possible game 7 on 3 days rest. Huge advantage. And just when I was about to complain of the Rays lying down like dogs to the Sox, Longo goes 3-run dongo and their back-up catcher walks it off with a homer off Koji. Exciting. Birdman wants to know if you can feel the heat.

The Resurrection of Orioles Nation

Awesome news. I found ON to be an invaluable resource when getting up-to-speed on O's minor leaguers in the past. And I'm confident Mr. Blair will do a fantastic job with the site now.

The gist: scouting is hard. It fascinates me the nuance that a scout can identify in a body in baseball motion.

On this date 1 year ago Wei-Yin Chen pitches 7 strong innings while Chris Davis drives in 2 off Andrew Pettitte, propelling the O's to a Game 2 ALDS victory vs. the Yankees. Fun game to be at. In 1997, Scott Erickson pitches 8 shutout innings to give the O's a Game 1 victory in the ALCS vs. the Indians.  In 1983, Storm Davis and Tippy Martinez combine to shutout the White Sox over 10 innings while Tito Landrum hits an extra inning HR to propel the O's to the World Series. In 1974, Jim Palmer and Vida Blue conduct a fantastic post-season pitcher's duel. Blue shuts out the O's in a complete game effort, while Palmer allows just a difference making solo HR to Sal Bando, as the O's fall to a 2 games to 1 deficit to the A's in the ALCS. And in 1966, Paul Blair produces the only run of the game with a 5th inning HR to push the Dodgers to the brink of elimination in the World Series. Wally Bunker tosses a CG shutout for the O's.
