Following the hire of Dave Wallace to be the pitching coach for the Orioles, the team has once again dipped into the Atlanta organization to hire its bullpen coach. Monday afternoon, the Orioles announced that Dom Chiti, most recently a Special Assistant to the General Manager since 2008, has been hired as bullpen coach.
The Orioles press release notes that the 54-year-old Chiti has been serving in front offices, or major or minor league staffs, since 1982. Included on his resume are several years with the Texas organization, time that overlapped with Buck Showalter's time as Rangers manager, so he may have been known from then. Chiti served several different roles from 2002-2008, including Special Assistant to the General Manager (2002-03), advance scout (first half of 2004), Director of Player Personnel (July 2004-05), and bullpen coach (2006-08). He was not on the major league coaching staff while Showalter was in Texas.
Chiti's time as a coach began in the O's organization, as he spent a number of years, starting in 1982, as a minor league pitching coach and roving pitching instructor. He also spent time in the Cleveland organization as a minor league pitching coach, major league bullpen coach, advance scout, and roving minor league instructor.
The Orioles also announced that Bill Castro and Scott McGregor, who both spent time as the bullpen coach in 2013, have been offered other positions within the organization. MASN's Roch Kubatko reports that Castro was offered a scouting position, which he has declined due to a preference to have a job on a coaching staff. McGregor will return to a role as pitching rehab coordinator at the complex in Sarasota.
